I've had recurring dreams about walking through indoor waterparks for the longest time.
I don't know what it is but it's a weird surreal combination of stimuli like that feeling when you've just got out of the pool and you can feel the water evaporating off your bare skin all over your body, but you're not exactly cold because the air is warm and humid, and the feeling of hard, cool tiles beneath your bare feet, the wet slapping sound of your footsteps, having to adjust your gait slightly so you don't slip, the extreme reverberation of sound and splashing within a wide open space surrounded by flat surfaces, the smell of chlorine etc.

>I've had recurring dreams about walking through indoor waterparks for the longest time.

Me too, and this is even waaaay back before all this liminal space shit. Ive had multiple dreams revisiting a place thats like a shopping mall, but all the main pathways where people would normally walk are waterways you can swim down with sidewalks on the sides to walk if you feel like it. Its not crowded at all with a few people here and there, and theres stores and everything. Multiple floors, all with water on them. All the water flowing, so you could ride a tube around the whole place.Very comfy.

It gave me the same feeling I get when I see those super comfy places japanese artists draw. Where its like a cramped room, but its so cozy looking with bunkbeds and a nice computer desk and giant bookshelf and stuff.

I wish I could go back there.

I don't understand why this type of phenomenon is so popular with the current age. There's a weird fixation on there being hyper specific rules to controlling the behavior of weird deadly entities. What is it about this type of occult management that engages zoomers so much?

I think it stems from the "lore" aspect of so much popular shit now. No one wants to just have a story or be told about something cool they want the 800 page FNAF backstory. Might also be that it can be seen as lazy that something simply is or something bad happened not for any particular reason besides that it just occurred even if I disagree.

tbf, I literally just have malls and leisure centers from the 80's still up and running where I am, because I live in a post industrial town, and not a lot really changes or happens. My local church is some weird ass liminal looking 1950's building as well.
What I'm saying is most of this stuff kind of just looks like where I live.

>>
>>724125861

>>
>>724132949
AFAIK they're supposed to empty, but naturally humans tend to invent monsters where there aren't any so you'll feel like something is lurking when there isn't. I don't think a lot of these liminal space bathhouses have actual monsters in them.

OP, it's because zoomer/millenial shits haven't gone a second of their existence without being bombarded with relentless stimulation from the internet, so when you deprive them of that their minds implode from a lack of it, creating fear within their subconscious in regards to being in empty spaces!!!FACT!!!

>>
>>724133560
the danger of the backrooms is the fact that someone could accidentally slip past realities and find themself in a place where you would slowly die of dehydration and hunger. that is, if you don't find yourself in some regions of the backrooms where there's monsters and traps and other stuff that will toy with you before killing you.
>>
>>724128018
Your underwater ancestors from bumfuck long ago speak to you
>>
>>724133769
it's also scary because if you consider the fact that somebody specifically created these places, their intention is most likely to trap you and kill you
>hey this place looks neat
>let's go explore
>*3 hours pass*
>oh shit i'm stuck here with monsters lol whoops
>guess i'll die
it plays on the feeling of vulnerability little kids had when they would walk through changing rooms by themselves, being lost and confused and scared of potential predators
it's a very abstract horror
>>
>Backrooms just gives me that dusty office smell
>Pool rooms make me wanna go swimming in it as it looks fun
>Zoomers find this scary
Why?
>>
Indoor pools are kino, still would suck dong to get trapped in an endless maze of slightly different rooms and hallways and probably starve to death trying to find an exit that doesn't exist. Problem is, that isn't an issue in a video game, so it's not scary. I've had dreams where I've been lost and trapped in endless playground crawl spaces that all look the same, that's a bad time. Would probably be a scarier game, too.
>>
>>724125861
>original point of the backrooms was to be a complete empty endless maze or boring plain corridors with fucking nothing in them

I never really got the impression that this was a threat. You fell into another world and maybe it might take a little while, but you could eventually find your way out. Maybe there could be a story or something about this actually happening and that would be more scary than just being chased by a monster.
>>
>>724135046

the very original post should have been the only interpretation of the Backrooms. just you, literal millions of miles of this wallpaper, this carpet, these florescent lights, and the implication that *something* is here with you. that should have been it.
and it was, until people started expanding on it, adding more levels and monsters and making fanmade interpretations "official". and then it died.
when you give someone an empty dark room, what their mind thinks could be inside is a thousand times scarier than some retarded-looking noodle monster ever could be.

Yes. Most of these backrooms shits are made by people in blender who know nothing about architecture. Everything looks off and no one would make something like this. Both due to the size of the area and a lack of any kind of sense.

The only thing I like about the 'extended' setting is the idea of increasingly more fucked up architecture and layouts, and differing 'biomes' of similarly uncanny spaces. Some will argue that visual variation is bad, because the repetition is part of the horror, but honestly the idea that you can start seeing different stuff, get excited that maybe you've found your way out, only to realize it's more of the same incomprehensibly vast space, just different looking, is worse than just monotonous yellow fluorescent humbuzz forever.

Zoomer "liminal spaces" miss the point and are not scary at all. The hint is in the word itself. It needs to be a space that isn't the way it normally is. An abstract collection of almost-architecture is just shapes. There is nothing for your mind to use there. The animal survival instincts do not kick in because there is no strangeness to subconsciously recognize. An empty supermarket does have that. You have become used to always seeing it with customers shopping there. It's not supposed to just be empty. That's why it's scary. Your body releases adrenaline when your caveman ass steps into a part of the forest where suddenly none of the birds are singing. That's not how it's supposed to be, and evolving an ability to automatically be scared when something is near-inperceptibly off is what has allowed animals to survive. You can't induce that effect of spatial uncanny valley when the space is completely alien, like nonsensical architecture that can't possibly serve any purpose.
>>
>>724151959
What am I supposed to see here? That looks comfy if anything
>>
I feel like people misunderstand the entire point of this shit. It's not that "empty room = scary" it's that the idea of waking up in an unfamiliar strangely dream-like environment with no visible means of escape. Nothing makes sense, you wander from one room to the next and get lost in a seemingly endless labyrinth of rooms that seem familiar yet wrong. Nothing is around to orient you, every door leads to some new room that looks similar to the rooms you just came from. It's like when you were a kid and would get lost in the grocery store, running from one aisle to the next looking for the security of your parents. Without anyone around, the rooms are dead quiet, and every new noise causes you to stop and listen intently. Is that a door closing or did you imagine it? Was that footsteps? Something else? It's like being alone in an unfamiliar home late at night, everything you hear that you can't explain causes you to stop and listen as you grow increasingly unsettled by the unexplainable. It's not in your face horror, it's a slow subtle dread that builds as you struggle and fail to orient yourself or feel secure in this unfamiliar and distorted space.

It'll be a bunch of attractive college kids slip into the backrooms and slowly get killed by some random monster or it'll be a single dude gets caught up in there and meets a gorgeous woman who has been stuck there for a while who he is willing to sacrifice himself for so she can escape.

Ever had a dream about your own house, but it's larger and have all these extra rooms and shit?

That's what these "liminal spaces" represent. A nostalgic, dream reality of things that exist in real life and usually something that is of interest and importance to a young child, like pools or play bins at the mall, but the dream versio where they are larger and more complex than the real thing.

It's one folder of nearly 95000 files from 2005-today

The highest form of horror is the unknown. Knowing that there is something lurking out there to get you but you have no idea what it is generates fear and tension deed down and that fear can sustain for a very long time. All the good horror books and movies reveal as little as possible for as long as possible, or at least make the horror incomprehensible to the rational mind, because the moment we know what the threat is we can reason about it, which gives hope that we can fight or avoid it.

I have this occasional dream where I am in a familiar place, like my home, and I need to get somewhere urgently like to the airport or to work. But no matter how hard I try I never seem to get closer and end up feeling like I am getting further and further away. I will leave my bedroom but instead of getting to my living room, it's my parent's living room. I try to leave the usual way but now I am back in my own kitchen, but it's double in size. It's the sensation of moving through familiar places that don't fully behave like you expect them to. You think you know where you are, but are still hopelessly lost. The creeping realization that this is not your beautiful house. And that thing over there is not your beautiful wife.

The absence of reason is how horror is invented. Who built this? Why? Is someone maintaining it? Is someone else there? Are you alone forever with no escape? People who can't think about these things have primitive monkey brain that only perceives danger as a chase and violence. They can't imagine the future or consequence and feel weirdly confident putting others down for thinking ahead.

That is also the kind of person society wishes to cultivate because they are very easy to control.

Not likely unless you're a dipshit and don't bring weapons.
And most of the time the aggressive ones eventually fuck off back to shivering and mumbling to themselves if you just pretend to be a nutter too and do the same thing. It's like the old rubbing zombie blood on you.

funny, seeing this, I remember this being the place you'd see in all the cartoons to represent a generic job a character works at, to the point 8-9 year old me thought it made up all jobs, and that my parents, teacher, etc. were doing what they did for most of the day just for the heck of it. After all, if they weren't working in front of a computer in a cubicle, what *were* they doing?

>zoomers think this liminal is scary because there's something wrong with them
Boomers were afraid of liminal spaces in the shining. Natural environments do not have perfect symmetry. Lived in environments filled with humans do not have perfect symmetry. Liminal spaces are places that are neither natural or for humans. Each one is a forbidden place, a realm of taboo you know you aren't supposed to be in. Executed properly they hone in on the underlying sense of unease every one point perspective shot of The Shining is constructed to have.

Ok, I don't think there's any point in arguing with zoomers about the scary or not shit. Seems fruitless. All the backrooms and SCP feels like it's several levels of autism beyond me.

But what's the actual game about?
Is there an actual goal?
Is it just a walking simulator?
Does it have any actual merit playing by yourself vs just fucking about with friends?
