I know the label “immersive sim” means nothing, but why in the world is Skyrim being included in recent discussions about the genre? I would call several of these titles RPGs but I guess some dorks want to act all superior and gatekeep what that means. Might as well throw onions of war in either category.
>>724140283>why in the world is Skyrim being included in recent discussions about the genreZoomers who weren't around to play Deus Ex watched a lot of videos by essaytubers about the genre.Because the descriptions those essaytubers gave of the genre are bad, they recognized Skyrim as matching the descriptions, thus matching the genre.Because you can talk to NPCs, sneak, and attack NPCs. Bethesda games do have some limited systems at play, but basically no ways to interact that would match an imsim. It's the same with Hitman, which lacks the roleplaying elements of the genre but has the systems driven stealth/infiltration aspects.
>>724140283It's more of a "vibe" as each studio or franchise have its own flavor of it (eg. Prey isn't dishonored isn't Deus Ex). As the genre is basically known to be First Person RPGs, the Elder Scroll serie kind of dit this basis, albeit it is "open world" while most of immersive sim works on a tightly design hub set of level, ala Warren Spector's city block game idea. But again, each studio/franchise have their own genre and you can argue that most Bethesda's game follow the same design (with minor differences) and than nobody copy them as is.(The same could be said for hitman, which is in no way in the genre for me, or you would say Max Payne is to that extent, or even.. Shinobi do or something)So yes and no.
>>724140779Well dishonored is considered an imsim
>>724140283Expanding it from only ImSims to ImSim adjacent games really makes it too vagueLike what does empty open world slop like MGSV have to do with immersive sims? It's so far removed from any meaningful usage of the term you might as well slap Minecraft and Fortnite on there
So this is the new imsim bait thread starter
>>724141474You can customize your character in Dishonored, there are multiple ways to accomplish objectives gated by systems-driven obstacles with multiple outcomes available. It's more rigid than Deus Ex, but that's most games in the genre anyway.
>>724141639It's doing to the ImSim what was done to the RPG, turning it into an element to incorporate into the slopified modern landscape.
>>724141901You can do all that in a lot of rpgsEven in something like assassin's creed odyssey.
>>724140283You can enter buildings and explore to your heart's content (as opposed to other games where buildings are just wallpapers)NPCs have names and routines and you can interact with them in various ways (as opposed to other games where NPCs are generic and spammed all over the place)You can pick up many different objectsAdmit it, you just dislike Skyrim.
>>724142363Half-Life 2 is an immersive sim
>>724142178Yes? Deux Ex was massively influential in popularizing the idea of cross-over gameplay, but you're coloring within the lines in RPGs and especially vidya simulators like AssCreed. In those games, you generally can't sequence break without glitches or stumble into solutions or alternate outcomes by pushing the boundaries of the play space. You pick your outcomes from a list of options instead of organically arriving at them. It's exceedingly rare, downright unheard of, to use your attack button as a tool that works toward a different outcome in most games, or have optional content that's truly optional and not sign-posted.Cyberpunk 2077 grazes up against some of this in moments where it specifically apes Deus Ex, but it's rare.
>>724142706Game lets me mess around with the environment instead of being static slop then it's an immersive simmerinoSimple as.
>>724142363Nigger stfu I have Skyrim installed, i just would never call it an imsim. Admit it, you think imsims are inherently “better”
>>724140283BioShock is no more an immersive sim than Clive Barker’s Undying, which it plays identically to.
>>724140283>immersive simshut the fuck up with this made up meme word faggot
>>724142804>actually defending cp77well now at least i know youre full of shit
>>724140283That last line in general sucks fucking dick desu cut that shit out
>>724140283Thief is good but Dishonoured is not good. I wish they were never grouped together. Immersive sim really cannot describe the games I like playing if I'm expected to see Arkane's games as 'classics of the genre'. It's unpopular to say this but Dishonoured is actually the abomination that is otherwise know as Thi4f. They're literally the same games. Every complaint you could throw at Thi4f's design almost equally applies to Dishonoured.
>>724140283I thought it was a hentai game.
>zelda lets you roleplay as zelda>not an rpg??
>American truck simulator has >character creation >customization >a lot of ways to make progress >many ways to do a single object But it's not A rpg for some reason
>>724140283>Skyrim>imsimHOW?! Its not. If it was, you would be able to just climb the mountain and not have to rely on capturing the dragon to get into last MQ dungeon. You would be able to kill Maven Blackbriar and whole thieves guild (or report them to jarl and get them imprisoned). And not just that either.>skyrim>immsimIt fucking WISHES.
>>724140283>>724140779>>724141421Immersive Sim is a design philosophy and not a genre. Skyrim obviously wasn't developed with that kind of philosophy if you actually look at how the quests are designed which is very linear and shallow. It has a lot of freedom but not in the imsim way, it stops feeling like a convincing world very quickly if you actually test the limits. Fallout New Vegas is much closer to an imsim because while on the surface it is the same as any bethesda game (and even uses the same assets and engine), you can tell that the designers had a VERY different approach which is much more in line with the imsim philosophy
>>724140283No but Morrowind is. Also replace nuhitman with blood money and add gothic and archolos.
