What is the worst way for a video game series to die? And did your favorite series die in such a way?

Game is extremely popular and makes an ocean of cash, but the IP holder/publisher is such a retard the developers want nothing to do with them anymore.

>What is the worst way for a video game series to die?
The studio has all of its original developers replaced by new ones that don't get it, and then proceed to release a new installment of an old IP that utterly fails in delivering what made the IP beloved to begin with, but is technically still canon

If the core fanbase around your franchise still exists, if you can still meaningfully discuss the old games in any capacity, if you can make a clean break between the old and the new and easily ignore everything after that break - your favorite franchise has not suffered the worst death that a franchise can have.
What's happened to some of the franchises I like can be described as an apocalypse.

Official devs turn out not to understand why the players liked the game so much.
To me it's the worst. To know they didn't know what they were doing, that it was an accident, that they were stupid and me as well, i turn out stupid as a result. Was there no creative intent behind any of this perfect clockwork?
It was born of failure. Had the devteam succeeded, would the game have been lesser?

Or maybe the devs did understand their own work but ended up not caring anymore and selling it off to a traveling circus. So i'm left caring greatly for an abandoned child i'm unable to rescue, buying circus tickets once in a while just to see him again. But it's all just a videogame. Grow up stop caring.

Not only is in completely inept 343 could never make one good game, they also somehow managed to get people to defend them or claim 343 was trying to push the series forward and those who want Halo to play like Halo are being ludites. I just don't understand why literally anyone defends 343.

When it dies for a while, it comes back with a reboot or sequel and either
>It isn't made to be what fans want so it flops
>It is what fans want but it simply doesn't sell enough for the company to be allowed to make another
Both can be intentional btw, if the company wants to go "there, we gave it to you and it flopped, stop asking"
>>
>>724172228
Or worse
>it isn't what fans want, but it appeals to brainlets and suddenly explodes in popularity and you can't even talk about the older games or preferring them without being called a contrarian, and eventually there are no traces left of the original small but dedicated fanbase and the series actually dies a final and real death when the new fans lose interest after the 2nd or 3rd game in this style
>>
>>724171524
When's the last time you actually made a friend from playing a game?
>>
>>724172409
Personally it was like 5-6 years ago for me now?
I was playing some $3 shovelware multiplayer game I found on steam and there was this one area where you could do typing races against other people and if you did it enough times you would unlock a mechanical keyboard item you could throw at other people for fun.
So I parked my ass down on that spot and played it alone for an hour or two cause no one else was around, and once in a while a random would show up and suck ass at the game for 5 seconds before leaving.
Eventually this one person showed up that was actually really good at it, and they stuck around and raced me in the game for probably an hour or two before we stopped and thanked each other for all the good games, and that eventually led to chatting.
Turns out English wasn't even her first language, she was just learning it as a hobby and her actual first language was Japanese. So we got chatting about our countries and the media and shit we were into, and by the end of the night we had added each other on discord/steam and decided to keep in touch.

We don't hang out as regularly as we used to these days now that we're both older and busier, but we still chat occasionally and send each other cool albums we have been listening to recently.

The worst way for a series to die is for it to continue living in a degenerate form, in the custody of a successful company.
>Zelda
It took 7 fucking years to develop Tears of the Kingdom, and it'll take 7 more to develop the next 3D Zelda. 14 years of Breath of the Wild Zelda. People who love classic 2D and 3D Zelda are going to be waiting forever for a crumb, if Nintendo even decides to toss them one.
>Fallout
>The Elder Scrolls
If you thought I was exaggerating with the Zelda example, it's already been 14 years since the last TES game, and 10 since the last full-fledged Fallout game, which was an abomination. Fallout will very likely never get another good game, but it is fated to live on in perpetuity in Bethesda's clutches, until - after 17 years - Fallout 5 is released. And it's shit. Meanwhile, InXile will never be allowed to develop a Fallout CRPG even though Microsoft owns the IP.

There's plenty of other examples.
>>
>>724174756
>It took 7 fucking years to develop Tears of the Kingdom, and it'll take 7 more to develop the next 3D Zelda.
To be fair, imagine how much more dire the situation would be if they were pumping out new Zeldas every 2-3 years when this is what we get after 7

Only it wasn't dead. Larian had proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that classic Forgotten Realms RPGs can not only be revived, but achieve mainstream success.

So imagine just how bad of a company WotC were that they decided to cease all work on the expansion, cut ties completely, and move on.

Is the only hope of curing this disease to have a sort of "visionary" director/IP rights holder for every project, something like Kojima? Strong vision and won't/doesn't need to compromise with shareholders and CEOs?
It's legit the only solution and hope for an IP I can think of. Just have a guy (ideally the creator of the IP) in charge, let him be uncompromising and not bound by the will of demonic corporate entities.
But then sometimes the creator sells his own baby to the devil like what happened with Star Wars and Minecraft...

To be bought out and then slowly decay into mediocrity and beyond. Sacrificed on the alter of mass appeal and then have anything remotely interesting stripped away until it all that is left is naught but a husk that only wears the skin of what it once was.

.hack//IMOQ was unique and very interesting
//G.U. improved on what was already there, but left behind the Lain-inspired aesthetics and mystery for a shounen action oriented game which wasn't bad but different.

Then Bandai Namco took it out back and put 13 rounds in its head and worshipped Sword Art Online for a decade, while at least allowing //G.U. to get a really good remaster, but left //IMOQ to rot.

I hate that I read every panel in that strip. So many people miss the point of Lara Croft and, ironically enough, they end up making her kill way more people than she ever did in the original Core Design games. You kill maybe 6 people in Tomb Raider 1 and the rest of the time you shoot demons, dinosaurs, wolves, bears, tigers, gorillas, and bats. New Tomb Raider also constantly brings up Joshua and tries to find some way to give Lara a love life which is just as annoying now as it was in 80s action movies.

>that VN
The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. No other game I've played had a 17 year old bishonen guy drink a 14 year old girl's piss and chase her down the hall to rape her, only to wind up getting anally raped by a 32 year old fat man. I still remember the scene where a 16-17 girl was hiding under a bed as her same age best friend was having sex with that same 32 year old fat guy on top. She heard every moan, bed shake and sound. In the wrong end she was discovered under the bed by her friend and made to join. A most terrifying scene was when an unwilling girl relives another girl's sex memories. The girl in the memory consented but the reliving girl didn't. It didn't matter that she was mentally screaming, her body in the memory did all the motions and actions as in history. It's like mind control rape except the victim was fully aware. Another scene the same girl and a friend were almost raped in a magic sex ritual, saved by the girl's older sister, and the backlash made the older sister want to rape her younger sister and friend.

The loli in this pic is freakishly lewd and once disguised herself as a teenage girl, fucked a boy until he nearly came, transformed back saying
>You thought you were having sex with a highschooler weren't you? I'm an elementary schooler all along!
And leglocks that boy, forcing him to cum inside her unprotected, when he screams in fear upon learning this. This isn't even getting into the tentacles, the gay sex, the lesbian sex, the incest, the sequel's mother/daughter lesbian scene, etc. The first chapter alone contains lots of lesbian sex scenes with an unavoidable girl masturbating in the bathroom. Truly horror is intrinsically connected with sexuality.

>Bad faith reboot or sequel where the developers and/or journos berate the fans and maybe past entries

which honestly is fine, everything declines eventually.
But I am considering if I even want to recommend the series in the first place because the next entries fucked up so bad they retroactively made the originals less enjoyable.

This is mainly a problem with story games where I don't want to get other invested into characters and storylines knowing that they get completely fumbled and made a mockery of.
In the grand scheme of things I feel that most games tend to have good standalone staying power that it never gets this bad, but you never know.

I struggle to think of a series that's been raped to the extent Pokemon's been. Every single thing about Pokemon's gotten worse and keeps getting worse, the mainline titles are now Sonic 06-tier, every new design is shit, the spinoffs are largely dead in favor of mobile slop and a fucking gacha, they can't stop fucking with old games and the things in them with shitty remakes, sequels and forms, and for all this and more Game Freak has been rewarded with record-breaking success after record-breaking success. It is perhaps the greatest example of why franchises should be made to end after a certain point.

The designs hurt the most, because people have been clowning on quality of the games for a long time, but at least designs were still solid. Gen7 had some of my favourite Pokemon, and human cast was possibly one of the best ever. Gen8 still had some interesting Pokemon designs, even if on average I'd say there was a quality drop, the cast was overall pretty solid still. Gen9 was ROUGH, most Pokemon were some lazy combination of spheres and cylinders, one of the weakest Pokedex in history. Then ZA with some really horrendous megas. And even human designs went downhill in those two games, the only ones I even remember happen to both be streamers (Iono and Canari)

I loved warcraft as a kid, spent so many hours playing modded w3, and early WoW was awesome. something in me died a little when I realized WoW was going to be all that they were going to do from now on (I think I realized this in either WOTLK or cata). it's already be talked about here so ill mention other stuff
the clusterfuck of nonsense that happened to spore was sad, it died before it could improve on the one good game it had. I will say that the wii title was at least interesting
darkest dungeon 2's current situation feels more like newfags and eternal whiners had an equal hand in fucking it up alongside the devs. the sequel wasn't meant to be a rehash of the first but all people expect of sequels are duplicates of the originals but with more shit tacked onto it. it's certainly not a perfect game but neither was the first when it was brand new, dd2 needed (and still needs) more updates to flesh it out, just like the original, yet people just cried about it being different rather than the actual fucking problems that could be fixed in the game. I love both games and I want the sequel to be finished with more updates and meaningful DLC but I know damn well it's probably going to be unfinished or given changes to try and sate an audience that can never be sated. fuck man, games should be allowed to be different and try new things, dd1 was great but I dont need two of them when I want the certain experience that the first gives. I want to play different things with the same world I came to love.
civilization being taken over by people who know nothing about history or game dev and everything about virtue signaling is hell. they put a fucking quote in the new one that was just some made up garbage by one of their own and tried to pass it off as someone important is insane. I miss when games were made by and consumed by people who gave a shit and understood what they were creating/playing.

Pokemon ZA has such potential to be the best pokemon game ever made with the new battle system but gamefreak refuses to put in actual effort because they know they don't have to and that daddy nintendo will just use its wealth to sue anyone who tries to give it competition.

They didn't even put a basic auto-attack
It was doomed from the start
Literal 0% comprehension of how to make the kind of battle system they were trying to ape

They turned a story about the survival of an entire people into some sort of feminist bullshit about two women's feelins.

Man, the more I read this kind of thread, I regret more and more not having gotten into videogames sooner in my life.
I always knew I was missing out on a lot of stuff, but never did I expect I would be missing out on so much. Nor that things would get so fucking bad.

I should have said "The only modern Battlefield". BF 1942 and Vietnam and 2142 also were good, solid games. They will outlive the console slop too and will remain playable long after their smallhat owners will turn off their servers.

Pokemon never had an auto attack so I don't know why it should have one. I can make the argument that the ZL mode should be toggleable and not a hold thing but the only time you shouldn't be in "battle mode" is if you're avoiding being attacked directly by wild pokemon and not being able to issue orders/apply dps to avoid being killed yourself is part of the strategy.

honestly, Japan's obsession with handhelds/Mobile is what killed KH
Did we REALLY need two mobile games just to give plot about darkness and they keyblade war.. AGAIN, though with it being canned Kh4's plot is going to be a mess since apparently characters in that were tied to the mobile game. Good job

Anon, the moment a guy like this leaves the company for any reason whatsoever his franchise will get taken over by a retard willing to fuck everything up to get the execs a few more bucks.
And even if he doesn't, the company can just put restraints like limited budget and time (or worse) on mr. visionary to fuck over his product (like hideo kojima who you already mentioned).

Don't worry. They'll release the modder kit and modders will start making conversion mods that fix it.

Nomura's gay chuuni autism would have ruined the series either way.

>What is the worst way for a video game series to die?
Very specifically, turning into an open world bore with vehicle crafting.

>And did your favorite series die in such a way?
My top 2 favorite games are Twilight Princess and Banjo-Kazooie. I'll let you put two and two together.

>What is the worst way for a video game series to die?
I'd say a minimum effort release soly banking on brand recognition to sell. Doubly worse if it's a complete genre shift
And did your favorite series die in such a way?
Oh yeah. Got the Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts treatment.

I prefer the right. It looks much more soulful, the Troll camera thing and his little alliance mug. His smile alone subverts expectation. While the left is just the same ol orc slop we've seen forever, le evil bad guy angry frowny man in monochrome.

That's way better than making a terrible TV show that shits all over the setting, tone, and lore, yet is somehow beloved by normies and is also made canon and will influence every game going forward.

Worst way has to be when a series makes nothing but bangers, but then it makes one (1) subpar game and that kills it for good. That's what happened with Fossil Fighters; first two games rocked, and then Frontiers came out and shat the bed.
