I think it is kind of illegal, but most game developers either don't care or get an actual benefit from people playing the games. Board games aren't cheap so you might as well try before you buy.

Every time I see some fat neckbeard raving about how good Kingdom Death Monster and how they bought ever expansion I ask them how many times have they played it and they will always say a number less than 5, including 0.

Dumbfucks are just buying the game for the coom miniatures and FOMO.
>>
>>724151808
It's not only legal, it's encouraged. 99% of board game developers--and shockingly, PUBLISHERS too--are 100% on-board with people stealing the assets and playing it through TTS. Hell, most new games have commissioned workshop uploads as well, or endorse ones that other people have made. Board Games are ironically one of the few gaming hobbies left that is still genuinely good and has a good energy in it.

The only people that usually raise a stink are those trying to to sell their own standalone version, usually with crossplay with mobile, and wanting to sell a billion expacs, but they're also usually games not worth playing (and most players will just put the mod somewhere not on the workshop), so it all works out

The sad truth is most board games are not that good and playing with friends irl is half the fun.

I've printed so many hard to get games thanks to people uploading the mods to TTS, I love it so much.

>>
>>724152803

Stonemaier and Van Ryder recently went after the mod trading discord too. I have no sympathy for discord niggers but I have no idea if there's anywhere else people were uploading the copyrighted mods. Like you said none of their shit is worth playing in the first place but two publishers doing it in the last month might mean the kikes are getting mad about the imaginary revenue "lost" from TTS

i have a friend that kept buying cooperative games like this and expecting my dopey wife and his moron younger brother to be able to comprehend and play them many times.
kingdom death, gloomhaven, that LoL one about piloting mechas... all played less than a half dozen times.
meanwhile my copies of splendor, carcasonne, and agricola are all beginning to show wear from constant use.
>>
>>724153069
Yeah. There's cases where I've ended up paying more than I thought I ever would for a board game, all because I got a chance to play it through TTS and know that I'd still play it for countless hours more. I've picked up tons of smaller games because I got a chance to try them all and I know exactly who specifically I'd run them with. There's games where I was impressed just with the design and visuals alone, and then was absolutely sold on buying it in person because the non-digital version looked even better and had more impressive pieces (not kickstarter plastic monstrosities, but more like Coffee Rush having the little cups and modeled ingredients)

It's a great way to get people to buy games, although I'll also give credit to the fact that the people playing them are also uniquely impassioned about the hobby enough that they much more regularly will go buy the actual game. It's works because of that.

>>
>>724153447
It's more that Master Trainer is well-known for being an immensely shit game, so people have taken that as a challenge to try to do the concept justice. Some of them are okay. Ultimate Master Trainer is still mostly just a dice chucker race by the end of the day, but it's just enough to kinda pull you in and feel like it's got a tiny bit of meat to it.

My favorite board game is Terraforming Mars, its a lot of fun to play on TTS, though I tend to avoid adding too many expansions at the same time, as it tends to drag the game down I think. I really like the fan mod feature of randomized board generation though that TTS offers.

1. buy TTS on steam
2. (optional) check out the mods section to find basically any published board game or card game under the sun and many fan games and expansions
3. find some people to play with online - when you connect to other people's lobby you will automatically download whatever game (mod) they are hosting. This does rely on the image and rulebook assets being hosted somewhere on the internet at a valid location.

Video game is an actual game so it will probably have animations or a working UI, but those things cost more money than just scanning a texture and uploading it to TTS, so they might not have all the content of the board game version (or the publisher is greedy and deliberately bases the video game on an older version to not compete with it's own product)

TTS is just a physics engine with scripting. So don't expect TTS to have a very "video game-y" experience. You will have to do a lot of reading the rulebook via a PDF viewer to figure out how to play the game. Players need to be comfortable with FPS control schemes and 3d world navigation, as TTS is more about simulating a virtual presence in a 3d space that just happens to have board game components physics objects in it to manipulate at your will. Many actions available to players can totally break the game rules or grief other players at any time. not much structure is enforced, so your players need some level of focus in order to actually play the game.

There's a digital version of this on Steam if you want to play it at a reasonable price.

The really expensive war games come with elaborate props, minis, illustrations, etc. I own base game Everdell ($70) and it's a beautiful board game. I'm not sure if it could have all the parts it does and go for cheaper, especially now that tariffs on China are 150% or whatever this week's number is.

>>
>>724161532
Sometimes the random nature of the game can do weird stuff, like if you draw too many Ra tiles the first epoch it can be hard to catch back up. But yes, it's really well made. The Sun Disc mechanism is genius, it's a dead simple strategy consideration to keep the richest player from just completely dominating. Pharoah Tiles, Monument sets, Civilization tiles, and Flood tiles are all important decisions to make too. Add to that it's the rare 45-60 minute playtime when most games are either less than 30 minutes or longer than 80 and it's easy to see why it's a classic.
>>
>>724162640
Just Pamir. The other Pax games look a lot more difficult, and Pamir is already a hard game to table with its complexity. I'd love to try Pax Ren in person, but I just don't see it happenning.

Pax Renaissance was definitely one of the hardest games for me to learn how to play well, lot of minutiae to be aware of that can really screw you, but it's a fantastic game, if you can't get to play it in person, there's BGA to try it out.

there is literally nothing that can stop people from doing print & play, but board game publishers are largely fine with them because home-brewed solutions aren't a perfect substitute for the actual components.

I'd say 90% of Knizia games come off very bland and almost pretentious with how rules light they are. And for the first few plays, any hype around it will feel entirely misplaced.
Thing is, once you get out of that small learning curve, his games absolutely reward repeat plays. Not in that obnoxious "once you read all the chess openers the game becomes fun", more in the fact with how extremely deliberate everything is. Every edge case, every slight hint of information, every vague step of evaluation all of them are intended and designed to keep your head up and leverage the power of player psychology.
He's had a ton of stinkers for sure and some of his 'heavier' games go too hard on the decision tree route for my preference, but every time I wanted to dunk on him for shitting out 5 games a month, the more time I spend with them, the I realize they are.
Though I think my love of Ra only happened once I played the digital version so I could actually figure the fucking scoring out properly - newest version is marginally better with the player board, tokens notwithstanding

It's preferable that you learn it before you host it so you can teach others. The /vm/ thread has a constant playerbase so you can ask there if you don't get players here. There's a couple guys playing on a separate lobby, maybe join them and ask them?

NTA, I found a version from 2024 in the trading discord. It has not been re-uploaded to the workshop because of DMCA. You put it in your saved objects folder. I've never played it so I don't know if anything is missing. The money(?) seems to be messed up, but the cards and directions are working.

Alright now I cleared the confusion it was a while since I checked on this, the second edition which is the one uploaded on the workshop is completely different from the original 1994/1995 printing, the second edition has 98 cards + 8, the first printing has 412 cards and is the one that contains all the crazy shit.

It may sound strange, but is there a game that can teach me how to play Dungeons & Dragons? I'm not looking for a game that borrows elements from a board game. Rather, I'm looking for a simulator that teaches the basic rules through one or more predefined campaigns.

For many people, board games are just an excuse to indulge in their main hobby, drinking. I used to play board games with friends and acquaintances and I fell out of the hobby because it can range from wildly entertaining to some of the most miserable settings I've been in. Some of the examples of the latter:
>autists who bring some game that needs an hour and set up just to explain the rules
>the person who will take command in "teamwork" style games like Pandemic and it's just automatic play from there
>normies with no charisma who cannot play anything than a party game and drag you down with their incompetence
>Euro board game fans

I'm not the one bringing in solvable games like European-style board games, I hate European style board games because what happens is this:
>you learn the rules but not the strategy
>person or people know the strategy and work quickly to achieve that, which is possible every time due to almost no RNG
>if you didn't do it perfectly you're fucked, there's still an hour left in the game and there is no path to victory
