I know it's very archaic compared to pretty much everything that came after it, but I still love Maniac Mansion. It's more open-ended design and alternate story paths from playing different characters was really ambitious and something rarely attempted by other adventure games. Even Day of Tentacle is nothing like it despite being a sequel. Though I still can't deny that the Indiana Jones adventure games topped Maniac Mansion in how they handle alternate paths. Those are a close second I think.

I simply could not into the NES version but I blame that on the controller and graphics. Will try on pc.

For me? You're asking me? Lotta nerve to ask me after the accident. For me it's Spongebob Squarepants: Employee of the Month.

It is possible (though not simple) to run the NES version in scummvm for mouse and keyboard support. Though unless you really need the music, you should just play the DOS v2 version. It's got updated graphics and it goes without saying that it has none of the censorship the NES version has.

This exact screen is the moment I dropped Monkey Island forever when I finally gave up and looked up the guide and saw the way in to the temple was a pixel hunt on one of the pillars which actually had a hidden lever sticking out of it. I was so angry and offended that it was the solution I refused to continue playing after that point and I'd laboriously made it that far on my own too

Does anyone know if The Longest Journey is worth sticking out? I love the semi cyberpunk city parts to death but always drop the game at the fantasy sections. There's also like four more games and that makes me want to keep playing.

That is the answer, it's whatever he threw up first. The solution is stupid because the puzzle itself makes no fucking sense. There's no clue or way to learn how it works, you're just expected to be familiar with a game Ron Gilbert's brother made up as a child.

It has been a while since I played it. But isn't there an NPC who always answers the question correctly? You could solve the puzzle by watching the signs and what he answers.
>>
>>724172413
It's a rule in bad adventure games. Pixelhunting is widely acknowledged to be cancer with modern adventure games doing their best to combat it.
>>
sometimes adventure game puzzles have the opposite problem of moon logic, the game normally swatting away any solution that's the slightest bit sloppy or requiring brute force but then for one puzzle it makes an exception where a highly impractical but technically possible solution is fine, close enough. the infuriating thing will be that you're likely to immediately consider the solution but then not even bother attempting it because you know the game would never recognize something that's even slightly a reach.

He does it infinitely until you figure it out.
>>
>>724176351
It's easy to say that they fucked up in hindsight. But you have to remember that they pretty much invented the whole genre. Nobody had any idea how to make a good adventure game. In interviews etc the old Sierra devs have said that they didn't think that dead ends were bad because it was perfectly normal to start the whole game over if you fucked up.

>>724176557
Would the player be told they had fucked up though? Also a question of how long the game is.

Sequel is a lot more direct with more different settings, edgy jokes, and memorable characters. Ending kinda sucked, but I don't really mind. I miss the beautiful pixel art in modern games.

The second, while having great aesthetics, is pretty much the trope incarnated when it comes to pixelhunting and crazy combination of item usages, but it's kind part of the charm.
What really baffles me is that there were two more games after the abomination that was the third. Never even looked at any gameplay since the style just looked uncanny to me from the screenshots I've seen.

Also while looking for the cover and gameplay footage, I was bombarded with a prequel game releasing in two days. While they at least moved away from 3D, it still looks kinda meh. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1939890/Simon_the_Sorcerer_Origins/

Wut? Nigga, I figured that out when I was like 7.
To this day, I style on my older bro by holding out my hand with a random number of fingers out and saying, "if this is four, what's this?"

Pic related is simultaneously one of the best point and clicks AND one of the best rpg series. 3 excluded, perhaps.

Mi3 easily, but also Full Throttle and The Longest Journey.

Never played much else (aside from Mi1 and 2), I'm ashamed to say that I never finished Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango and Sam & Max, or any of the Indiana ones. I really should get back on that.

that was not the story of Dreamfall TLJ as I understood it
though that game is kind of a cryptic mess...

I wish it could escape the "browser game" stigma

Just 4.
>Sam and Max HTR
>Phoenix Wright
>I Have No Mouth
>Day of the Tentacle
I don't know why, but adventure games have always been a genre where I find them really interesting but I don't have any desire to play them. I enjoyed the ones I played though.

Thimbleweed Park might be my overall favorite despite the terrible ending.

Something like 20+ but I've played a lot of ones that aren't on here.

to this day i still chuckle about the protagonist getting his hero skills from a correspondence course. modern day hero quest would be a guy getting his hero certification from udemy

Zoomers will never know the impossible coziness of huddling at your desk on a rainy day with coffee and cookies to play a point-&-click game.

It shone pale as bone as I stood there alone
And thought to myself how the moon
That night cast its light
On my heart's true delight
And the reef where her body was strewn

About as much of "browser game" type that 2D platformers are....in fact, I would say 2D platformers are MORE browser game.

what the fuck is wrong with JP devs? I think this happens in no sleep for kaname date too

Try to imagine what it's like writing a mystery story that has to be solvable and has to be solved at the right time, so that no player doesn't figure it out too soon and no player is too late with the solution. It's near impossible to do consistently, you'll probably only solve a case at the perfect moment once or twice per AA game
