I don’t understand. This is the anime everyone was splooging all over themselves for the longest time? I seriously cannot comprehend how this anime got past the first season, much less any subsequent seasons. My mouth is agape at just how awful this anime is. I decided to give it a try out of sheer boredom just to see what all of the hype is about. Where do I even begin? Let me start with the premise

It has potential, but is utterly squandered by…almost everything else present in this show. A guy gets stuck in an MMO far in the future that would make Ready Player One look like the SNES era. But it’s so undercooked. It’s barely there. Apart from the occasional inner monologues and quirky antics with his two crazy NPC yandere I found myself almost forgetting that this entire world was still a mere MMO that went haywire for one player. It’s like the creator or writers of this wanted to make an isekai but to distance themselves from it as far as humanly possible at the exact same time. For reasons that utterly escape me, it’s as if the fact that Ainz is actually a player stuck in MMO is just window dressing to have an excuse to show some almighty lich tear apart NPCs with his own God complex. Kind of like Tron Legacy, only edgy and super dark for the sake of it. And if the protagonist didn’t bother ever leaving the computer space and just killed off a bunch of the programs for his own bloodlust.
(1/???)
>>
>>724167148
The creator wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to show a world filled with bloody violence, actual consequences, dark, grim ends for developed characters(to an extent) a la Game of Thrones without the actual impact of all of this occurring in the “real, living”” world. Granted, this is my main criticism of the isekai genre as a whole (at least pertaining to isekai that features protags getting transported into a virtual world.) However, this could be forgiven if the isekai was executed properly, as seen with other anime such as Mushoku Tensei or Skeleton Knight. Whereas the aforementioned examples try to breathe life in both the characters and the world in a manner that is conducive to the genre, Overlord ostensibly attempts to…ignore everything about its own genre for the sake of...honestly, I have no fucking clue what kind of story this show wants to tell. Which leads me to my next point–the protagonist

2. Mushoku Tensei and Skeleton Knight both accomplish what Overlord never seemed too intent on addressing–character development and motivation. For the former, it’s about some NEET who dies after a lifetime of humiliation and bullying, but gets a second chance at life in what is arguably one of the richest, most compelling isekai I have ever seen. But that’s just my opinion. As for the latter, it’s much the same as Overlord, With the key difference is that this protagonist seems to have a concrete goal in mind that is continually expanded upon in a narrative that is filled with levity and some darker themes as well.
2/4)
>>
“But anon, what about Ainz’s goal to reunite with other players who found themselves in the same predicament?”

Skeleton Knight actually emphasizes its protagonist’s goals though. You know the protagonist, what he wants, his likes and dislikes, and what is aiming for (at least for now.) I cannot say the same for Overlord, with its sparse, throwaway lines of his mentioning what is essentially a passing whim to maybe…perhaps…get in touch with other players at some point. The pacing—indeed, the episodes themselves are not really played out in a way that would give the audience a sense of an overarching goal or even a temporary motivation out of this half-baked, overgrown undead who just happens to have great fashion sense.
(3/4)
>>
>"No!"
>>
>>724167401

Like with Overlord, the Skeleton Knight™ is trapped in an MMO. The show does not pretend that it gives a shit about finding a way for the protag to get unstuck from this foreign world, much in the same way Overlord does. But again, Skeleton Knight is upfront about its story, whereas Overlord is utterly disingenuous. What does Ainze want? To me, all he seems to want is to revel in his own situation, torturing and murdering NPCs out of his own lust for blood and God complex. Make no mistake, I am not criticizing this world’s blood, guts and edgy deaths out of some ethical protestation. Nor do I think anime is “satanic” like that faggot Matt Walsh asserted. (My favorite anime is Ninja Resurrection, blow me.) What I AM criticizing is the nonsensical and often contrived manner of showcasing all of it. As if the creator wants to see genuinely good, albeit flawed and misguided characters get torn to shreds for the sake of it. There’s no rhyme or reason to some of these episodes. Case in point: the episode in which Ainz slaughters an entire band of adventurers/looters because…he gets off on it? Is Ainz torturing characters with pathos (such as the half-elven lady and her lover and the girl who wants to erase her debt) supposed to endear me to this protagonist in any way? The selfsame protagonist whom I was watching just a season ago showing mercy to so many people, avoiding violence when necessary, as well as getting flustered over Albedo’s continual advances? Ladies and gentlemen, it appears we have a major problem concerning:
(I lied, 4/6)
>>
>>724166825
Yes.
This is explicitly mentioned in the novel.
>>
3. Tone. This show’s entire tone is about as consistent as freshly spewn-out vomit. Does the show want to be dark and gritty? Does it want to be more light-hearted with amusing tropes involving horny harem girls along with the dense, plucky guy being unable to keep his nose from bleeding like it was Niagara Falls? Overlord was apparently written by people with massive ADD, because the tone, the writing, the sub plots are all over the place. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like Ainz is the protagonist here. Then again, I guess the creator loves spending an entire episode or two developing freshly introduced characters only to kill them off in a show that appears more concerned with masturbating itself over the power level of Ainz. Again, this really culminated during Season 3. What have I been watching for the past two and a half seasons? Was there a point to any of this? Because with the way the episodes are laid out it almost feels more like Cowboy Bebop than a show with an overarching narrative. And that’s a bad thing in this case. The protagonist is inconsistently written, the tone is inconsistent, the character focus is more scattered than buckshot, (seriously, who am I supposed to care about in this show?) and I am starting to suspect that this anime has no idea what it wants to do with its own characters, much like Bleach.

4. Holy fuck the rancid CG is forced in EVERY SCENE. This fact alone should have relegated this abysmally overrated show to a premature cancellation mid season 1.

tl;dr: nu anime fans have the shittiest taste, and I cannot fathom how Overlord got so popular.

>>724167725
the show peaked in season 1. And they forgot, or at least never realised, the most profound part of the story, and have left it to die.

Which is, the MC loved his game, and was bored and lonely without his fellow guildies to play with. Now that his npc allies are 'sentient', its still not the same, and he misses those people. That was a plot-point that was abandoned very quickly in the show, and it was the one that i resonated with the most aswell.

As someone who loved raiding with a close-knit guild in the early years of WoW, i was very engaged with Overlord, for the first few episodes. It became power-fantasy cringe quite quickly though. The latest series and movies have been downright terrible, no idea why its soo popular.
>>
>>724166825
yes it was a P2W but it was also cyberpunk future so the game company sent death squads to people who tried to datamine the game.
>>
>>724167148
I can provide three pieces of insight.
First, the base material the story was made out of, was the creator's unused D&D binder. The inconsistent tone to worldbuilding can pretty much entirely be attributed to this. The material the story was made out of wasn't ever really intended to be woven together into a single narrative, the creator was just a DM with really bad player luck, so had a novel's worth of hooks, prompts, and scenarios. So he used it. It wasn't even chronological when first released for this very reason.
Second, the primary theme of Overlord is people filling roles, and the social pressure to conform to those roles.
The emotion suppressor Ainz has, beyond its fantasy and character implications, is the mallet that stops Ainz from expressing individuality outside of the role he has been forced into. Many, many characters are forced into strange roles by the story, and the absurdist interplay between people playing roles they niether want not understand is the pulp of the narrative. Overlord is, more than an isekai, more than a fantasy, an anime about corporate life and office politics, and the people following their job description even when it makes no sense.
Third, Ainz is not supposed to be seen as anything other than pathetic. Ainz is someone who cannot let go of a past that will never return, and is bitter that nobody appreciates his stewardship of things nobody wants. Even in a new world, Ainz cannot do things he wants, he is still locked in a holding pattern, just in case one of his old friends wants to come play again. He has been given true, godlike freedom, and all he has done with it is shackle himself to his old holding patterns, awaiting the approval of the memory of people who will never return. Nobody will miss Ainz in his home. He is incapable of moving on or enjoying life. He's undead, and lives in a tomb, literally and metaphorically. He's dead inside as out, he no longer seeks joy, merely the memory of past joys.

Your expectations, what you want the show to be, just don't match what the show is trying to be. You're better off watching something like Log Horizon or Mynoghra. Overlord is a power fantasy anime (like most isekai) about a nigh-omnipotent being conquering a fantasy world. In that sense it's closer to something like Gate than something like .hack//Sign.

Log Horizon is about the playerbase of an MMO being transported into the world of that MMO, and then proceeding to analyze how MMO mechanics work in reality (how does respawning work? How do NPCs see players? Etc).

In Mynoghra the protagonist is a turn-based 4X player, but it does focus on the 'how does this game work in reality' aspect and likewise features a normal guy suddenly becoming an evil overlord.

>The selfsame protagonist whom I was watching just a season ago showing mercy to so many people
That's the character development you declared nonexistent. You gradually see the protagonist's morality decay as the actions required in his role does not match his moral compass, so as he performs more of them he gradually becomes colder and more uncaring. He's just doing his job. (Note the workplace language/comparisons early on, and look up the concept of 'banality of evil'.)

>>724167901
They barely exist because the modern isekai trend may be called 'isekai' but are in fact just power fantasy stories in a fantasy setting (and there's a similar, more recent trend of 'normal' fantasy stories with the same kind of power fantasy, sometimes called 'native isekai' as dumb as the term is). The 'game became reality' part is typically just the setup to base the power fantasy on. So the only series that come to mind trying to actually capture the MMO feel are .hack//Sign, .hack//Roots and Log Horizon; the former two predate the modern isekai trend.
>>
>>724167901
I mean, best bet is probably stuff like Dungeon Meshi or Goblin Slayer, which has all the codifiers of isekai, even if they aren't, and tend to operate on very video game-ey or tapletop-ey logic.

>>
>>724167635
>a show that appears more concerned with masturbating itself over the power level of Ainz.
That is the main draw of the show. It's called a power fantasy, and most isekai are like this.

>Was there a point to any of this?
Yes: worldbuilding. In order for conquering the world to feel impressive, you need to explore the world and its people. In order for the protagonist's actions to feel cruel or impressive, you need to establish the victims and make the audience love or hate them first. This is true for nearly all stories: if there's a villain, it will have a kick-the-puppy moment for no other purpose than establishing the villain is evil. If there's a friend/ally/love interest, a part of the story will exist just to establish why the character is a wonderful person. Without following the characters for a bit and learning what drives them, their deaths would have no impact.

>Does the show want to be dark and gritty? Does it want to be more light-hearted with amusing tropes
Are you new to anime? In Japanese fiction (including video games) it's common to intersperse a darker story with light-hearted moments to make the darker aspects hit harder. Danganronpa for example does this especially well: there's plenty of fun time with wacky hijinks, and then your favorite character dies in a brutal manner. Without the fun times you wouldn't have such an attachment to the character and you would be better mentally prepared for his or her death. You need to have the audience let their guard down to be able to sucker punch them.
>>
>>724172606
Wrong, Log Horizon baits you with the promise that it's about people exploiting MMO mechanics before revealing that it's about China, aliens that eat emotions, literal brain damage from reviving and the boring ass younger characters no one cares

>>
>>724174276
>China, aliens that eat emotions, literal brain damage from reviving and the boring ass younger characters no one cares
not to mention the whole plot point about how your character can get disconnected with how you actually look, but luckily everyone either has one of those polyjuice potions or created their character with the right body type

Both are more D&D than video games, and especially nothing like MMORPGs.

>>724174276
It's still the closest you'll get. Things like .hack just use the MMO as backdrop for a story, while things like Bofuri and SAO Alternative sacrifice game 'realism' to make it more compelling and series like Leadale or Kenja no Deshi just use it as setup to have a crazy powerful protagonist.
>>
>>724175104
It's not a 'plot point', it was briefly mentioned once as excuse to get Akatsuki in contact with Shiroe. It later briefly gets brought up again when it turns out that having a female character feminizes (former?) men, but again, it's just a bit of background lore and not given particular focus.
>>
>>724167625
fuck its even mentioned in the anime, many times.
>>
It just hit me
The trope where characters exposition dumps their mechanics and strategies actually makes sense in MMO land. In Bleach or the ugly pirate anime all the YouTubers watch it's just bad writing but in an MMO setting I can see a sweaty loser bragging about his build mid PvP
>>
>>724167148
Ainz isn't stuck in an MMO. He's stuck in the body of his MMORPG character, but the world he's in is just a fantasy world, not an MMORPG world. But yeah, it's a great premise that goes absolutely nowhere, it's obvious he only had three volumes worth of material.
>>
>>724176872
>not an MMORPG world
Many of the MMO mechanics still apply. He couldn't swing a sword (attempting to just made it drop out of his hands). Renner had to gain a negative karma to be able to open the seed of the fallen. The traps were all very RPG-esque, you see that when Climb opened the trap door and the retarded crossbow was pointing away from anyone who would have opened that trap door, but supposedly that was going to shoot someone if they opened it without disarming the trap.

Those are the influences and consequences of an MMO forcibly made real by Wild Magic. He's still not in YGGDRASIL, he's in a world that has become forcibly converted to inherit YGGDRASIL's qualities. Before the Dragon Emperor summoned the first set of players, there was no magic system or levels or karma. Characters such as Climb and Renner are not "NPCs", there is no game master who designed them, they are simply people in this distorted world.

The endgame is building a massive base (also p2w btw, you can get 700 total NPC levels but AOG has over 1000 from what I've seen, so you can pump money into your guild castle to just make it overpowered) and collecting world items and shit. I don't know about how p2w the pvp is, but you get a special class (World Champion) and shit from pvp, so there's a reason to be good or pay to be good for that.

but the point of the scene is him using the opportunity to get off a ridiculous amount of buffs freely, that's the joke
>>
>>724183703
Overlord is pretty obviously based on D&D 3.5 and disjunction is a 9th level spell in that, not even epic level magic
meaning any level 17 wizard upwards can cast it, which is still you know, archwizard territory, but not like Ainz isn't attracting that level of attention anyways

standard action to cast so perfectly combat ready
>>
>>724182598
It wasn't the gaijins specifically; it was a limited thing that only people who bought all the blu-rays and went to the re-cap films were supposed to have. It's understandable if your shit is still small-time, but at 14 volumes and 3 seasons or what have you at the time, your IP is a successful franchise; he had to expect things wouldn't stay physically limited and not only would it reach a wide JP audience, but the wider global fandom too.

>He was broken as shit as a necromancer/mage
His build was average due to prioritizing fluff over crunch.
He seemed OP as fuck due to being max level in a world where 99% of the population is like below 10, he has an entire guild's worth of resources to throw at his problems and nobody has any of the basic bitch common sense precautions that all the players in the game had.
>>
>>724182449
I've just read through all the volumes currently out and I have to disagree, I'd say the anime is honestly the better way to experience it.
The books are DREADFULLY repetitive in their writing style.
>Ainz smiled (although his face can't move)
>Ainz grimaced, even though of course his face didn't move
>Ainz was thankful his emotions at the time didn't show on his face

I honestly think the anime didn't really get rid of much good material at all for the adaption and most of the jokes/impactful moments work better animated. Plus the character designs are really good so seeing them on screen helps a ton.
I'd say Konosuba is better to read than watch, I do love its music, artstyle and VA work but the latest season really skipped too much stuff.
>>
>>724183923
It's obviously retuned because YGGDRASIL is overwhelmingly imbalanced, though. The [World] buff on Ainz would definitely reject a debuff of lower caliber.
>>
>>724183821
feels less like a joke and just more like a power wank fantasy

every mmo made in the past 2 decades is a gear threadmill with time gated content that serves as homework for salarymen
it's not possible to no-life an mmo anymore, the games physically don't let you grind
people that are addicted to grinding end up making alternate characters and alternate accounts to do more homework, the notion of constantly poop socking the same character a dozen hours a day doesn't exist anymore
>>
>>724183923
Overlord is loosely based on 3.5 D&D. the 9th level spell Wish for example was upranked to "super tier magic - Wish upon a star", so no, it's not safe to just assume a D&D spell is the same tier in overlord as it is in D&D.
>>
>>724184053
disjunction isn't quite a debuff it's more like magic itself being attacked, which is why it's the only dispel that doesn't need a check
you just point it at a general area (it's not even single target it's AoE) and magic goes nuts
>>
>>724184250
his point still stands, just by holding a world item Ainz would be immune to disjunction.

VRAINS is a better MMO Anime. Prove me wrong.

even by yugioh standards vrains was a mistake.
>>
>>724184330
that one is definitely debatable
now no NPC would ever use that spell because it's a power fantasy anime
but something like disjuction absolutely would be one of those things that strictly rendered his build in the MMO an RP build because any other player would just disjunction him if he went for a full buff cycle

disjunction as you describe it would be banned in the MMO, because it would render ANY build worthless.
>fighter comes up to you

>monk comes at you
>lol disjunction, all his magical abilities fail, his gear breaks, and he can't do anything as a fly up and bombard him
>wizard comes up to you
>lol disjunction, all his buffs and gear is stripped.
>>
>>724184507
>if he went for a full buff cycle
but he wouldn't do that in an actual engagement because it's highly impractical
>>
Why didn't anyone try using a Phoenix Down on him ?
>>
>The spell caused all magic effects and items to be broken down (or "disjoined") into their basic components
I don't see how that spell would be allowed to exist in some MMO where the point is to spend weeks/months grinding to build up your special magic items.
>>
>>724184860
Because Updog would resist it.
>>
>>724184741
unless access to that spell is gated behind the biggest P2W tier imaginable and cost thousands of IRL dollars to get access to a spell that can gameruin someone else

he's wrong about how it works on items for starters, every item gets a saving throw and if you actually succeed in breaking an artifact you (the caster) lose all your spellcasting ability forever.

It sucks because the author is braindead and developed nothing in his setting

simple you allow a spell like that to exist and also sell insurance policy items that replace any magical item destroyed by disjunction
I mean the MMO was hyperpredatory due to future corporate dystopian hellhole

you get a saving throw against losing spellcasting, and wizards tend to be pretty good at will saves

yeah but Ainz is loaded down with so many artifact tier items that you'd have to make that save like 10 times.

This makes the story sound kino as hell I must admit
>>
>>724185217
only if you actually break some of his artifacts
and lets face it, Ainz absolutely reached the level of infamy where an enemy wizard who loses all spellcasting in exchange for destroying 10 of Ainz's artifacts would go "worth it"
especially because Ainz would you know, horribly murder him afterwards since he still has his spellcasting and would be beyond uber pissed off someone wrecked his cheat items
>>

>I don’t understand. This is the anime everyone was splooging all over themselves for the longest time? I seriously cannot comprehend how this anime got past the first season
The books are better than the anime by far. That's the problem. Overlord was also one of the first adaptations (if we don't count OPM) to feature a truly busted protagonist that wasn't completely lawful good when the batch of these started churning out.

The story in the books have dropped in quality though, but it's mostly because the author just doesn't want to do them anymore.
>>
>>724185291
meanwhile the master laughs because you're the 50th apprentice he's temporarily given the ability to cast disjunction and he's just using you lot as proxies to pull the trigger on a spell he's too scared of using himself

Was this what the emotional limiter was? I thought it was just from his undead skills, but if it's some effect to force him to conform to his character backstory that is a lot cooler.

Man this series had a lot of potential at one point, I know its more of a comedy/satire anime but it really fucking overdoes the "overwork culture is BAD mmkay" angle to the point where I feel like the guy should have just written help books instead.

Ainz flat out is immune to any damage or effects cast by some sub 60 level faggot unless it is wild magic or something with is absurdly rare shit only dragons can do.
The people in the new world that can actually hurt him and are still alive can be counted on both hands, and there is no way they would kill themselves just to do that move, especially considering Ainz has equipment that while not quite as good, is still insanely powerful, and other people can spell cast also in his group.

The anime sucks because Overlord doesn't translate well into the format. 99% of the LN is world building, dialogue, monologuing, and is just overall extremely slow paced. The "action" in the LN only exists in service to those points and are almost always extremely short bits.
>>
>>724185915

I don't mind this since it could still go somewhere, The ending is probably either gonna be a cluster fuck or open though. Unless the last two volumes are fucking huge, there is no way they are going to resolve everything at this point.
>>724186493
S1 is okay but otherwise yeah, people got the impression about it that it is supposed to be shounen fight focused when it isn't about that at all.
Honestly the last 2 volumes were such a waste. Even 14 had problems but 15 and 16 were actively wastes of time of huge parts of them

Many, many threads on 4chan are made to give the OP an excuse to post a critique he could not find a more relevant thread for.
>>
>>724186632
Yeah I have no idea how Overlord is supposed to end within the last two novels, even if they are huge I don't feel like the plot is focused enough right now to really create a satisfying ending.
I either expect some kind of betrayal by a Nazarick NPC since Ainz has been autistically focused on testing their loyalty for so long...or for Ainz to get killed off by some insane combination of Yggdrasil and new world shenanigans somehow.
It could have a very tepid ending where the Nazarick side just win anyway like normal, and the author is pretty fucking dull so its a real possibility.

>I either expect some kind of betrayal by a Nazarick NPC
They have been foreshadowing Albedo for a while doing that. Now the twins are suspicious of her because of some off handed comment Ainz made.
I expect that Albedo betrayal happens and Ainz either has to fess up to what the actual state of affairs are and that he is actually retarded and he finally gets to be treated as an equal rather than a super genius, or everything collapses. Or an open ending where some catastrophe happens and things look cautiously optimistic after. Though yeah it could be that Ainz and crew die or there is a timeskip and some faggot with world savior shows up and just kicks over everything Ainz built or something. The author does like dark endings and the editor had to tard wrangle him a couple times away from some dumb shit

There will be no player action. All the players are dead. There was no one, not a single person on, when the servers were shutting down because Ainz was the only person miserable enough to just sit there on a dead game at midnight to get forcibly logged out. There are probably 5000 better DMMORPGs that exist, and Ainz was the only human on the planet who had enough of a nostalgia trip with Yggdrasil to actually stay logged in.
>>
>>724166825
I assume every MMO in every anime is f2p, therefore p2w.
