Was it really ahead of it's time?Was the WoR good enough or did you want more "railroad" like the 1st half of the game?
Speaking as a FF fan, the stories suck and they've done nothing groundbreaking. The strong suite is the world, the characters and the adventure. I'd say prove me wrong but I'm too old for le opinions fight.
I played it for 1st time last year and it was pretty good character wise.
