a misunderstood gemor the beginning of the end of paper mariowhich one is it?
>>724185328Beginning of the end.
This is one of those kind of games where everything is good except the gameplay.
>>724185328It's worse than dogshit. Being a terrible game is more forgivable than destroying the trajectory of a series.
>>724185445the NPC designs also sucked, too. the main villains were all pretty good, but the vast majority of enemies and random townies were just ass. still, most everything besides actually playing the game is great, I agree
>>724185328Genuinely both. The game is great in a lot of ways, namely the writing and story, but it signaled the end of Paper Mario as an RPG-focused series. Since then, the series has backed off the RPG elements significantly, to the point you can argue most are more like story/adventure games with paper aesthetic/themes. Obviously the newer Paper Mario games are still RPGs for the most part, but they've dialed back the intricacy of mechanics heavily and focused more on the writing/paper gimmick. To which, you can see that starting with Super Paper Mario. A game that's still technically an RPG in some ways, but more focused on writing and the paper gimmick.
>>724185328It can be both.
>>724185328The beginning of the end but still a good game
>>724185328It never passed itself off as the next 'main' Paper Mario, it was always considered a side game.
>>724185608>Obviously the newer Paper Mario games are still RPGs for the most partsuper paper mario is more of an rpg than sticker star and co.
>>724186162paper mario was always a spin off
>I-it's actually le good.Tired of Paper Mario zoomers.
>>724185328If the gameplay resembled a mainline title, and nothing else about it changed, it would be by far the best 2D Mario ever made.
>>724185328Very odd for a Mario platformer to control so terribly. Pretty much unplayable, especially considering that dogshit Wii remote d-pad.
>>724185328I think the spider bitch in this may have been what turned me into a lolicon
>>724185328Playing this shit and Partners in Time back then makes me appreciate the darker (by Nintendo standards), wackier aspects that aren't as present in other titles.
>>724188059Her!
>>724185328>Main hub area is a chore to navigate>Two "Ha! Ha! The joke is that we are making you memorize a complicated input sequence... But wait, you still need to do this for real, pick a notebook" moments>The Bitlands is the first above average world and then everything goes EXTREMELY downhill >Combat is "what if this played like a mainline Mario game... But with shit physics?">We are doing literally nothing with the combat btw, sometimes the boss strategy is literally "just spam the bomb partner, bro">here is a world that is a shitty boring spaceship game, here is a world were we recycle the same bosses for 100 levels, have we mentioned how boring the combat is?This games settles itself to do so little and yet still halfasses most of it
>>724185445The art direction and gameplay were generally lacking for me. It still had good aspects at least.
>>724185328writing and gameplay wise it's the very first signs of the future that the series would take, sadly keeping TTYD's tenancy to waste your time to boot that never went away after that game.Perhaps the die was cast when Miyamoto let Ryota Kawada direct the series, he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of RPG that meant anything to anybody, just rediculously profitable games that outsell anything that has "soul". Super Paper Mario might be anti mandate(or not), but its certainly the anti rpg series on the wii in its refusal of wonder, beauty, and excitement. no one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.>A-atleast it was good though"No!"The Writing is dreadful, the gameplay was terrible, As I played i noticed every time a character went for a battle, they were platforming instead of taking turns.I began marking on the back of an envelope every time there wasn't an RPG battle. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Ryota's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that means he has no other style of writing. Later i read a lavish, loving review of Super Paper Mario. It said something to the effect of, "if these kids are playing Super Paper Mario at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to play Fez. And they were quite right. they were not being ironic. when you play "Super Paper Mario" you are, in fact, trained to play Fez.
>>724185328It is both the last good Paper Mario and the first bad Paper Mario at the same time. It can be both.
