Is Ryu really cool or just really boring?

If you know a character for a really long time then you usually start developing some kind of attachment towards them, negative or positive. And if you like them you usually think that the character is pretty cool while if you dislike them the very same traits will appear boring. I don't see anything special about him. He looks kinda plain but at the same time overdesigned. His character was always super master ninja but he gets blown the fuck out regularly. He is definitely legendary to some extend just for how long he has been around. Ryu Hayabuse is a household name. But if he was a new protagonist in a brand new series I doubt anyone would care much.
