I just finished reading Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 with a friend. We did the seamless loop method of playing, and we were blown away. The story has cemented itself as one of my favorite pieces of media, so let's have a thread about it!

Also: We are closer to 2036 than we are 2010...

The first game was great. 0 was a massive pile of shit that actively makes my day worse any time I am reminded of it.

I actually really enjoyed 0, though there were issues with some story aspects.
But for a game that's written as an in-between, it's almost flawless.

I've only played SG and watched its anime adaptation. Are the spinoff games worth going through? Linear Bounded Phenogram and My Darling's Embrace and.... I think there was one other one.

Also what the fuck are the "elite" games?
>>

I haven't played them, but both are on my to-do pile.
Linear Bounded Phenogram is side stories of the characters that help flesh them out. Play it if you want to explore different worldlines and possibilities.
My Darling's Embrace is a dating sim. It's got some moments I've seen posted here and some decent art.
Elite is a VN but with the scenes from the anime. It was mainly seen as a cash grab and was universally panned. 0 was supposed to have one but was silently cancelled.

It's heavily flawed, full of plot holes, operates purely on contrivance driving the plot, and one of the major hooks in Kagari looking like Kurisu is never explained.
>>
>>724202224
My advice is to not engage with any of the spin-off media at all, because none of it lives up to the original.
>Also what the fuck are the "elite" games?
It's the game with all the portraits and CGs replaced with stills and animations from the anime which also means they cut whatever content the anime didn't cover, like Faris' entire route.

I liked 0 cause the true ending of the original being "and they all lived happily ever after" was lame. I'm glad to see a timeline that exists in misery so the other timeline can live happily ever after.

Far as I remember is they're versions that use the anime adaptations for scenes and not the original release art.

I think there's a lot more plot elements that leave it more confusing and less well-knit, but there were very little plot holes.
Kagari looking like Kurisu is just coincidence. It's a bit of a letdown but my issue with her was when she appeared, fully grown up in 2025 on Milky Way Crossing. That's definitely the worst thing about both of these games as it makes no sense and you could remove her without having any difference.

>but there were very little plot holes.
There are, at minimum, two major plot holes.
>Okabe time leaps back from the future in short intervals, needing to time leap thousands of times, going from the more advanced two week time leap period back to the earlier two day period in the process. Somehow he is able to leap through the period in which was captured and being tortured by Leskinen (which left him in a vegetative state for years) in a manner which is never explained or acknowledged.
>The true ending abruptly cuts from Mayuri's ending to years in the future where they're enacting the final message plan, but there's zero explanation of how Okabe got out of the situation he was in before the sudden time skip, in which Leskinen and his forces were holding Okabe at gunpoint and preparing to capture him, in which there is no reasonable way for Okabe to have escaped and this is not explained or acknowledged.

But still the bigger issue is that the entire mechanism the story acts on is that Okabe choosing to answer his phone at certain times results in changes to the timeline in a manner that is completely arbitrary and not beholden to logic or consistency in any sense, in complete opposition to the first game which had established cause and effect.

When the fuck is the reboot coming out?

Can't remember CGs and quotes, but favorite character is JP version Okabe, dubbed by Mamoru Miyano. He wasn't at full potential in the original, but it was still pretty good and then he got fully comfortable at Zero and the 2 main spin-offs. I personally like how each time he has a different delivery for "El Psy Kongroo" in the spin offs, somehow managing to make them funny more often than not. I can't think of many other characters this well-acted dramatically and comedically.

I got into VNs with Steins;Gate and was crazy about it at first, now not so much. My favorite VNs are from the Infinity Series (Ever17, Remember11, etc - older VNs that absolutely inspired SG, even having the same composer Takeshi Abo)

I forgot Route A but I believe that was a different worldline. If it wasn't, then I can only assume time-leaping re-established memory links, since it's a backup of the person's current memories, trauma aside.
I also agree with Mayuri's ending being abruptly cut given he was shot in the leg. I can only assume something happened behind the scenes involving Daru and Maho, but it's certainly one of the weaker points.
Lastly, I believe the worldline changes being outside of Okabe's control is a key point to show how far beyond the issue of time travel and Kurisu's research goes beyond the Future Gadget Lab. It isn't explained as well, but I feel it's the point of the story.

Delayed until next year.
I wish it was the original and 0 paired together with more cohesive writing and CGs.

The SG series is overrated. I wouldn't say it's bad though.
