don't know anything about lord of the rings besides the most common references, will I get lost in the story?

Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War are amazing games. Amazing gameplay in both and, despite being non canon, I think it's the best non canon LOTR project ever made.

I remember there being a lot of button mashing

>>724203013
Why they don't make more games like this?
>>
>>724206371
Yeah it 100% is. Shadow of War has a lot of stuff to do. It's a shame they tried to jump into the microtransaction pool as one of the pioneers, only for it to end up being an everyday thing in gaming now. Makes you think how consumer perceptions changed.

The worst part is WB SITTING ON THE MOTHERFUCKING NEMESIS SYSTEM PATENT.

One of the innovations of the 2010s that had the most potential, and no-one ever gets to do anything with it. Holy fuck it pisses me off.
>>
>>724207320
Honestly, this was bigger lore rape than the Gondorian negro. Shelob is supposed to be a Lovecraft-tier cosmic abomination, not an Onlyfans thot.
>>
>>724209589
I never get this complaint especially now that its been a decade. Nemesis really only works for these Mordor games. Really what other game would have benefit from it other than Soulsborn?
Besides it shouldn't be this difficult to just make a distinct version of it. A lot of games have enemies who comment on your death or adapt to your moves.

>>724203013
you really don't need to know shit about lotr to play it

that relies ENTIRELY on how bullshit the patent is, shut the fuck up.
Look at nintendo patenting the act of capturing creatures and fighting with them.

really weird thing is Hogwarts Legacy you can tell they wanted to do something like it, but then didn't go all the way through with it for some reason even tho it is a WB game. So there's just an encyclopedia of named enemies that is completely useless

doubt it would have helped that game much tho bc the open world completely soils it

>>724209939
>literally anything that involves open world and randomly generated enemies, dumbass.
No need to be rude, fella. And I disagree. A game like No Man's Sky didn't need the Nemesis system and all of its content is Randomly Generated. It isn't like the game suffers because you don't have RDM of a character crashing into you because he heard of your exploits. That's literally all the Nemesis system is. You do something a certain way and the captain will randomly react to it or another captain will spawn in to react to it. No game needs that.
>Look at nintendo patenting the act of capturing creatures and fighting with them
Lmao thats the entire gameplay loop of Shadow of War
If anybody wanted to do a legally distinct Nemesis system they would have done it by now.

nintendo has become quite good at it.
>>
>>724211290
Shadow of War has a garbage itemization system designed with microtransactions in mind. In gameplay terms it improves on Shadow of Mordor in pretty much every way.
>>
>>724211212
Okay. I mean just because you don't like the game doesn't mean it doesn't have a different version of the Nemesis system. There are games out there that took the Nemesis system and did better by having to work around it. What about Detroit Become Human? The main menu of that game opens up and the character in the menu will react depending on the day, time, how long it's been since you played, whats happening in the story, etc.

And no there really isn't any need to be rude. It isn't my fault you're browsing an online lemur farming forum, alone, on a Saturday night. Get over yourself.

For decades mechanics have been patented and there's been this unspoken nebulous gentleman agreement that don't be a lazy 1:1 thief and everyone will just turn a blind eye for the most part. The idea being that the patents are held by more lenient, less retarded, people in order to protect the wider game industry ecosystem and stop everything stagnating rather than vultures who'll swoop in at the first sign of infringement. Feel I need to point out that this is different from IP protection since one is based on an identifiable brand being infringed (still kinda gay) meanwhile mechanic related is more about abstract ideas and rules being made exclusive and restricted.
Unfortunately Nintendo might have opened up Pandora's box with the Palworld case because if they get a full win then the precedent is set for extremely aggressive and (((profitable))) mechanic patent protection suits to popup for the new wave of lizard people corporate lawyers to froth over.

well for one there are no collection quests, tower landmarks for vision, and other ubislop that defined a lot of AC.
its far more about intense action and fast paced decisions once you start going in.
the nemesis system is unique.
Once had an orc survive multiple killings and become almost invulnerable unless I tamed a big cat and brought it over to him.
the strongest combo moves of melee, all ranged, and all stealth all did nothing, and only some environmentals or gradually wearing him down would work.

problem was I had ANOTHER orc on the same region that went through similar evolutions.... but most of them were from killing me.
He would hear me get into fights with bosses like the super-durable orc, and cheapshot you without warning or greeting.
He evolved to become a nightmare that spammed multishot/spreadshot blasts of insta-kill arrows, and had a trait to deny the players "last second" mechanic to try and survive a lethal blow (once per fight)

the second game read the files of the first game, found HE was the one that killed me the most, and brought him back in slightly altered form.
Made him tankier but far less lethal since I could actually tank a hit.

its such a shame too, because they literally did it in the most unobtrusive and least scummy way possible. everything that you could buy could be acquired by just playing the game. just playing the game would get you currency and items to sell for currency, that you could spend on everything that you could buy with real money. engaging with that system at all only meant playing less game, which is inherently stupid. "im going to spend more money so i can play less of this game". i said it back then, and i still say it today: everyone that freaked out about it was an absolute retard, and monolith did nothing wrong with how they handled it.

>>724209589
you say this shit every thread, and you're fucking stupid for saying it every time. the patent is extremely specific, and most of it boils down to "just dont use the word 'nemesis' when you do it". you can create like 90% of the functionality of the system and still not infringe on it.
>but if its so easy to do, why doesnt anyone do it?
because you dont even know what you're talking about. a significant portion of "the nemesis system" involves the army management part. enemies simply remembering the player actions/encounters and reacting to it IS done in other games. what people ARENT doing is creating a bunch of voiced characters and writing a ton of lines to fit a myriad of scenarios. why? because its a lot of fucking WORK, and it has to still FIT THE FUCKING GAME ITS IN.

go ahead, think of a game that could be better "with the nemesis system in it" and describe it. chances are, thats not the nemesis system that you're thinking of.

as long as he isnt a cheat edited orc, there is definitely something that you can do. ice, poison, not being a retard with beasts, using the quick dash instead of rolling jump. nothing is truly immune.
>>
>>724214560
its really not that bullshit. you can win assaults/defenses with pretty shitty armies. the original COUNT of them was long, but that was under the idea of "give people a reason to keep playing once the campaign is over. you arent going to hit much repeat content during just the campaign". i guess some people just didnt like playing the game that much.

>>
>>724215961
oh, ok then.
I already tore him... (well I guess that was him all along, huh?) to bits on how the wording and application can be quite open and how Nintendo is being utter cunts about everything
>>
>>724216047
yeah people's idea of what the nemesis system is is very vague, but the patent is very lengthy and specific. every thread these games are brought up, some dipshit thinks the patent is "held hostage" and we're somehow missing out on something, when the truth is that nobody wants to put in that much work when doing less is far more profitable.
>>
>>724203013
It's the most important thing, fun.
>>
>>724216283
the problem is that its specificity covers a LOT of bases.
you could pull of nothing more than a partial version of the system and it would be squarely within their patent.
imagine patenting not only a hammer, but the way the hammer is swung to nail in things.

what would be more productive would be to examine the citations of the patent.
citations are from patents trying to show how they are different or improving on what the cited patent is fore.
disney, tencent, nintendo, sony, ea, tencent, activision, all felt they had to cite this patent for far more limited things.
And it seems to be revolving around the general procedure.
Disney made some systems/methods for "facilitating the sharing of user-generated content of a virtual space" and felt they needed to cite the fucking nemesis patent.
WHY?

this reeks of bullshit waiting for legal vultures to start stomping and wrecking a complicated mess of gray areas
>>
>>724216963
legaleze is complicated, but a lot of that citing is a preventative measure to just say "look bitch, dont fucking start with me. its clearly different". because you CAN still try and start shit if the other party claim's ignorance. if they DONT address even the slightest possible connection, they are vulnerable to being brought to court where they have to prove under scrutiny that its different. simply filing a citation saying "we checked, its different, see?" prevents all of that, and keeps the money hungry suers at bay.

seriously.
look at this section.
you can call this specific, but its broad as fuck.
what happens when you fall squarely into this?
a "partial design patent violation" occurs.
and then they can fuck you for money or because they don't like you.
courts CAN award shit like "apportionment" damages, based on the supposed value of the portion "copied"

woops, wrong image. I was looking at some stuff with some alterations they made to the patent.
site wasnt saving to clipboard
THIS one.
>>
>>724217213
anyways, ignoring my flub of images, this is all design patents.
and design patents get to fuck you for having partial copies.
which means more lawyer shit, more money, and a bigger threat on anyone's head in time and money spent if the patent holder decides to be pissy.
>>
And I can go further with this.
Do you know the easiest, simplest, and most financially profitable reason WHY Warner Bro's would sit on this patent for so long without doing anything with it?

Because they don't have confidence in spending the money needed to make use of it on a full game production, and being able to bleed any game that partially violates their design patent is more likely to make them money.
>>
>>724217249
>>724217327
lmao, i was looking at the first one going "wtf am i looking at? this looks like an email history, lol. what is he trying to show me?"

i mean, something like this strikes me as applicable to "choices matter" visual novels. hell even dispatch where your choice can knock out a tooth of character. while this is a fragment of what the overall system does, fig 14 is not the entire system. even if it copies fig 14, that isnt the entire workings of how dispatch. overlap is generally allowed, because you have to argue and convince that its truly infringing or ripping off, without being its own thing. while hitting nails with hammers might be a part of a patent for a carpentry game, its not the whole thing, and its a pretty common/natural sort of interaction that can be easily argued as such. citations help prevent fuckery.
>>
>>724217498
>Because they don't have confidence in spending the money needed to make use of it
wb has proven to be incredibly retarded time and time again. they have no idea what a good investment looks like, and they've been coasting by on old successes, residuals, and investments for a long time.
>is more likely to make them money.
yeah, see above. also my earlier point that making something that full uses the system means that you have to make a game where the system FITS, and then the WORK of actually designing all of the myriad nuances, interactions, and results to make it function and worth it.
>>
>>724203013
very mediocre game
>>
>>724206371
The orc design in the first game is better.
>>
You're in for a fantastic game, but Shadows of War improves upon it in every way. I still go back and replay it every now and again. It's just fun to dominate orcs in different ways, like you can get creative with how you plan ambushes and then you have the stronghold raids which are always fun to participate in and watch as your orc army storms it. It's also fun to dominate war chiefs and then watch their guard betray them.

The Nemesis System is just so much fun. It makes the world feel more alive and it reacts to how you play the game, and it remembers previous assassinations you tried to do, plus chiefs/war chiefs can sustain permanent scarring/afflictions depending on what you do to them. You can even make some go insane if you fail to dominate them enough times, like they'll just babble and become disfigured, or let's say you drop morg flies on a chief that doesn't like them, well he'll remember that and then comment on it next time he sees you if you fail to kill him. You can even be ambushed by other chiefs while attempting to kill another one, and some chiefs will even fight others for territory/power, and you can even have low rank and file orcs betray their chief to claim their title. It's just fun watching the battlefield evolve and seeing how things play out. I also like how the orcs can be from different clans which influence their stats/weapons/personalities/etc. It brings uniqueness to the game since it revolves primarily around killing and dominating orcs.
