Why has it lasted so long?
Modern engines scale easily
We're in deep technological stagnation since the late 360 era
For sure because generational leaps aren't nearly as wide as they were back in my days. But, the biggest reason is because the amount of quality video games has drastically slowed down. To perhaps the worst levels its been since home consoles first released. Like, what the fuck would I play on a PS5? I can't think of a single game. FF7 remake? Looks like shit and is also on PC. Spider-man 2? Looks like shit and is also on PC. Rise of the Ronin? Looks cool but runs like shit, and is also on PC. Google the top games of 2005 then the top games of 2025. It's harrowing. 2005 was even seen as a weaker year of releases. Why the fuck would anybody spend $600 on a console with minimal backwards compatibility when they don't even make new good games anymore.

>>724206037Technologically? Almost certainly no. We've hit a lot of physical limits on current technology.Making good games again? Definite possibility, but the whole industry has to collapse, and then be rebuilt by nerds who love video games making video games again.
>>724206227You don't think AI will get better?
>>724203954Devs refuse to take the leap despite 80 million PS5s out there now because it means leaving behind 150 million other people and they'd rather have both markets and deal with PS4s gatekeeping them from newer features and scope. I think they're gonna force devs to make games for the PS5 and stop production on both PS4 and PS5 at the same time because devs are going to refuse to move over if Sony isn't forcing devs to.
