Because it didn't know what it was.

It heavily focused on the single player campaign trend, yet got absolutely fucking mogged by games released in the same year. Call of Duty 2, FEAR, RE4, Timesplitters 2, Battlefield 2, and those are just the shooters I remember.

Also nobody has ever cared about Quake's story. It was historically about the online, which fucking sucked in 4. And again got mogged by almost all of the games I just previously mentioned, and Unreal 2004 was still one of the pinnacles of online Arena shooters and was at its height at the time.

It should have never existed as it is, and that's why people hated it.

I've recently replayed it and it's simply a mediocre game that would've become completely forgotten if not for THAT part.
There really isn't much to say I didn't even take a single screenshot.
