People say Helltaker was carried by it's cast, but I'd say it's specifically having the cast interact with each other. Awaria has cutscenes too, but a couple of lines with no reply don't give you much to flesh out characters with.I you just kept the talk button and gave the ghosts more colours than a single shade of green it would have been way more sucessful.

Every character design was a home run. In comparison, Awaria tries to do its own thing and be unique without following convention and it ends up falling flat on its face because the entire design base was fundamentally flawed to start with. It just doesn't look nearly as good or appealing, which means people just don't really care as much about the characters, even if the archetypes and writing themselves are on-par.Put simply - A well-designed character will be allowed to show off their personality, while a poorly-designed one won't ever get the chance.
