Recently a friend and I watched Mushoku Tensei. He was a big fan of it and it was my first watch.

I haven't had the best time lately but it made me feel really good and was sort of like an escape everything about the journey felt magical and reminded me of how much I loved JRPGs when I was playing them a bit more.

I kind of want to relax in a fictional anime world but this time I have the urge for it to be open world of all things. I know its generally shittier but its just what I am feeling right now.
Is there any game that could satisfy this as I know Japanese devs tend to dabble a bit less.

I'd like it to be a world I can kind of get more lost in and immersed.

The Metal Max series are open world JRPGs but it's more of a "Mad Max" setting than a fantasy one
Most of em are still in Japanese or have only fan translations, but Metal Saga on PS2 was fully localized

I loved the game but not really what I would call open world. It is pretty limited considering everytime you enter a new chapter the area you just played closes off forever.

The Xenoblade series is probably the closest you will get to "open world" in a JRPG without getting into gachashit. It just isn't a JRPG thing, for good reason.

JPRGs tend to be story-driven and open world games are characterized by having vague, or at least loose, story plot points. The two don't mix well together. You could get a technical JRPG with an open world (see: Elden Ring) but it's not what you'll find in what you'd typically call a JRPG.

Also, Mushoku Tensei is one of the most linear and by-the-story-beats JRPG style story I've watch. Like, you could practically see where characters get new levels and which parts are unskippable cutscenes. An open world Mushoku Tensei would be nothing like Mushoku Tensei.

They're not open world, but Grandia is a JRPG about going on a big adventure. Grandia 3 is as well. (Grandia 2 doesn't have the same theme, although it is good.) Alliance Alive kind of gets like this as well, even if the first half of the game is just leading you around three of the kingdoms before you get the world boat/airship. Alliance Alive has the bonus of mostly letting you make the characters how you like, altho the set stats does limit this a bit. I remember that Star Ocean 2 was pretty good as well, with several different characters and being able to pick different characters to recruit depending on what sidequests you pick up.

As game-inspired as Mushoku Tensei's world is, there isn't a traditional JRPG that's quite like it. MT's world is more MMO-inspired while its characters are mishmashes of anime tropes that have been around forever. I agree with anon's >>724227908 assertion that Grandia 1 is a good game if you want a feeling of "discovery" and "adventure" with a cast of curious kids like Eris and Rudy adventuring in Mushoku Tensei season 1.

Final Fantasy IX is a better overall game than Grandia 1 and has a lot of that same sense of adventure, but for this specific request, Grandia is the better suggestion.

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure would actually be a good suggestion for a relatively non-linear game that keeps its story tight... If it weren't piss easy and every other aspect of it didn't suck ass.

There just aren't enough JRPGs about kids going on a fun adventure now that I think on it. Etrian Odyssey Untold gets uncomfy real damn fast.

For open world jrpgs you don’t have a lot of choices, since jrpgs tend to be very linear and storydriven and really only resemble rpgs in combat gameplay.
That said there are a few. I personally would recommend dragons dogma and the SaGa franchise.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations guys.
Yes I am aware and I've actually played both Grandia and FF IX. In my high school years I would juggle and play so many JRPGs that I legit have no idea how I kept a social life and studies lol.

But ever since uni and more work, I haven't really played one and Mushoku Tensei made me legit emotional remembering some stuff in FF IX specifically I was telling my friend too.

As for Saga and Xenoblade yeah, I actually forgot about that one I'll make sure to give it a try. Is there by any chance a Tales of game that is more open ended? I like that those have the skits so if there is also an open-ended one could be very fun.

Oh interesting. So one reason I never tried these is because people sold them to me as more akin to say games like Stardew Valley/Harvest Moon but this actually looks way more interesting.

They seem cool its just not really in the mood right now, looking for a more fantasy setting to just get lost in a bit. I would love if there was a straight up CRPG with a fantasy anime world. I know there's this one that's sci-fi and kinda like a CRPG from the 90s.

I've not played many of them, but the ones I've played are more linear. Sure, you could technically walk around anywhere, but there's really only one place you need to go and that's where you have to be. It's part of why I recommended Alliance Alive, since once you get the boat, you're free to do things is pretty much any order.

Alliance Alive also has the SaGa combat system.

The closest you'll get to the "anime fantasy" open world experience in a JRPG is probably some Japanese or Korean MMO rather than a traditional single player JRPG. Think Final Fantasy XIV.

The Xenoblade games are open world (or at least, the areas in the game are massive) but Xenoblade's worlds are more "unique" and "original" rather than the typical anime "high fantasy" setting and don't really have much in the way of relaxing, SoL/immersive qualities you're probably looking for in an open world RPG.

Or if you want to get more unconventional, there's Elin or Elona. Pretty much the closest things to a "anime fantasy" life sim RPG. They're technically open world but not "open" in the way you probably want (the areas are segmented maps but you can go to them freely with no real walls blocking you).

I had actually read a bit of the light novel a few years ago but the anime itself hit me harder. I wasn't too far into the story though then.

As suggested, I'd say the Xenoblade games. Xenoblade X is true open world, but as already said, true open world and story driven don't really mix very well. Also it's sci-fantasy. The numbered Xenoblade trilogy are more linear in their approach, not open world, but you get thrown out in big enough areas that give you the illusion of the world being vast and open. Which is the right approach IMHO if you still want to tell a story, that by definition must be told in a linear way.
Another suggestion in the same vein would be the well loved Skies of Arcadia. Not open world either, but the world and the world map being vast and full of little things to find also gives you the illusion of a vast open world to explore.
It's all about the illusion and it being effectively tricking you.
Otherwise, you'll have to look at wRPG for open worlds, but obviously you'll lose the appeal of the comfy japanese anime adventure.

The thing is I'm 100% ok with there not being a great story or anything. I more so just want there to be a lot of NPCs.

The idea is I want to get immersed as you would in a lot of more western RPGs just with more Japanese writing and anime aestethic.
Xenoblade and SaGa are 100% going on my list, I'll look into Elona too and see what its like.

I've never been a big MMO guy btw, which MMOs would you say are the best for this kind of thing? Also I saw someone mention segmented maps I don't really care I more so just want freedom to explore it doesn't have to be seamless.
