Let’s talk about the Nintendo DS. How did it feel to own one?
>>
>>724241718
screen hinge was so bad ong
>>
>>724241718
i preferred the gba
touch/mic/2 screen gimmicks were gay. only good thing was download play and no link cable
>>
really cool, and the first gens had peak Nintendium.
>wireless LAN chatrooms with drawing, on a handheld
>mario kart LANs on the school bus
>experiencing the first time a game used the dual-screens in a 1st class manner
Even the online somehow worked really well (for some games).
I really wish Nintendo would bring back Metroid Prime Hunters MP
>>
>>724241718
Like owning yout mom, action at the top, business at the bottom.
>>
>>724241998
>yout
epic fail
>>
>>724241718
It was the Mario Kart and licensed shovelware machine. And I fucking loved it.
>>
>>724241718
As a kid it felt weirdly futuristic. I was at a birthday party and one kid had Mario Kart and everyone gathered around with their DS and we could all play it with Download Play. Then there was Brain Age where you flip the thing and hold it like a book. Pictochat being available before anyone was old enough to have cell phones. Putting Pokemon games in both the top and bottom slots to transfer your Pokemon into the future.

The hinge was a piece of shit though, never broke mine but I knew three different kids that did.

The Wii followed shortly after and also felt like future technology, /v/ made fun of waggling but as a kid playing the cawadooty port with the Wii Zapper was so fucking fun.

Back then consoles used to be more than just locked down PCs.
>>
>>724241718
The fucking hinge always breaks, after the countless many iterations the fucking hinges still broke.
>>
I owned a DS on launch day.
There really wasn't THAT much to do on it until some of the other major titles trickled out. Mario 64DS was a lot of fun, especially as someone who only got to play bits and pieces prior because I didn't own an N64, and there was the Prime Hunters demo if you felt like torturing yourself.
2004 was utterly barren.
2005 had some good stuff but you were still supplementing your library with GBA games, which were still coming out at the time. The 1st party lineup was getting there, Mario Kart and Mario and Luigi and Animal Crossing and so on.
2006 was where you started to see real momentum with the DS Lite, NSMB, and the hype building up around gen 4 Pokemon which didn't technically release in the US until 2007.
But if this was your only console for those first few years I hope you liked game boy games because you were padding your library with them for sure.
>>
a girl in my class owned one and I was kind of jealous, mind you that was in 2009
>>
>>724241718
It kind of sucked after you got tired of the prime demo and mario 64 like >>724242426 says. I abandoned mine when the PSP came out, like I'm not waiting years for a new pokemans after gen 3 was such an ass downgrade from gold/silver, I think I'll play ridge racer and liberty city stories on the bus ride home instead.

>How did it feel to own one?

Horrible, both it and the 3DS are the worst portable to play because of the 2 screens, there is no balance on the weight so it's never actually comfortable like a regular one screen one.

BUT the games make up for it.
>>
It felt like the future at the time. I think it was my first experience with a touch screen. Sadly us being kids was too much for the Nintendium, so we had broken hinges and broken L and R buttons.
>>
>all this broken hinge talk
what were you apes doing?
>>
>>724243226
zoomers..... don't have impulse control
>>
This console was the first time I ever played an online game. Metroid Prime Hunters online. It was very fun.
>>
>>724242803
>sequel never ever cause Nintendo wanted Xenoblade and then turned the devs into their open world slaves
I'm still mad
>>
>>724241718
it was awesome, thing was thick and built like a tank. like an so that was stretched and had big boy triggers. I couldn't believe I had portable animal crossing on it, legit made my jaw drop the day I bought it
>>
>>724241718
>>724242803
it wasn't until I started playing with modern handhelds that I realized how shit old handhelds felt and it was mostly nostalgia and the games carrying them.

Like holding my psp 3000 I was setting it to rest on my middle fingers because there's no way to actually grip this thing.

Console manufacturers were really just releasing slabs of plastic and people were just holding them any way they could.
>>
>>724241718
Hated the second screen, felt like a step down from the SP honestly
>>
>>724243456
I tried to use my old gba sp recently and it felt impossible to hold right as it feels so tiny now compared to my tiny child hands when I played it back in the day
>>
>>724241718
>How did it feel to own one?
Very good. Remember that the DS was backwards compatible to the GBA (but not the old Game Boy games) and since the GBA was very popular and had a ton of games, you automatically got a big library of games for the system. You could play DS sequels to GBA games all together. Plus, while some games used the touchscreen, some games just used the second screen for more information or a menu, meaning games weren't relying on the gimmick to be functional.

There were also a lot of really unique games using the gimmick. Knights in the Nightmare comes immediately to mind. Previous portable games were basically console games just on-the-go, so having a new way to play was pretty nice.

I still like the system and have a few backups, just because they were cheap to pick up a few years after they stopped producing them.
>>
>>724241718
It kicked ass. I already loved my gameboy and my gameboy advance, but this thing was on a whole nother level. It gave us another period of beautiful 2D pixel games after most of the gaming industry had already moved on to shit-looking 3D garbage. It was also the first handheld where I bothered to pirate games, so I had tons and tons and tons of games to play.
>>
>>724243456
They're built for tiny babby hands. Holding a DS as an adult some of my fingers actually go numb after a while because there's no functional position to hold it for long periods.
>>
>>724241718
Playing fully 3D games on a handheld was pretty amazing at the time. Playing local multiplayer wirelessly was too.
>>
I had the DSI XL, it was comfy but I regreted asking one for my mom instead of the PSP, because at time I never played Pokemon and when I did I thought it was the most boring shit ever. I still had a lot of fun with the DS, carried it everywhere I went, but the only games I replay from time to time on it is Megaman ZX and ZXA, everything else didn't age well save for a few JRPGs. In comparison there's more PSP games that I emulated and want to replay. The 3DS library is really good tho.
>>
>multiplayer with no link cables
>up to 8 player multiplayer with just 1 game cartridge
It felt like fucking magic.

This was the normal opinion at the time, 64 ds was a relief since you could finally play the game with normal controls (a proper fucking d pad). BUT MUH ANALOG STICK is a zoomer invention.
>>
>>724244562
>pictochat
Miss me ad-hoc functionality.
>>
>>724241718
I only owned the dl lite and not the fat ds, but it was a piece of shit like the 3DS. Cheaply make chinks hit and the hinges ALWAYS fucking broke.
>>
I want to go back
Literally everything was better in every single way back then

Bring back snacks.
>>
>>724245001
It was a retarded opinion then and now, the dpad really doesn't work for mario64, which is why my ds had a horribly scratched touch screen from the black plastic thumb thing they included to simulate an analog stick.
>>

>spectrobes

I wish I could have experienced this board culture. Making a thread on Christmas morning earnestly discussing the new console you got as a gift couldn't work nowadays

>64 ds was a relief since you could finally play the game with normal controls (a proper fucking d pad)
insane opinion, kill yourself
>>
Since I didn't have wifi until the 3ds came out, it was mostly just a better GBA.
More games, no battery, backlit screen so you could play in the dark with no glare.
Upgraded to the DSlite after the hinge broke when I dropped it.
Had to get a new one after a nigger stole it and my copies of FFIV and FF1+2 Dawn of Souls.

A good pda in 2004 was basically a very thick iphone with a real keyboard, it was good advice.
>>
>>724245510
Everyone was on /b/ anyway.
>>
>>724241718
Was a lot of fun to play on, and had more fun games that the PSP. Sure the PSP had games, but it had less, and they usually weren't the kind that were fun to play on the go.
>>
>>724245103
I miss the beefiness of the 1st gen. Gave it to my neice for her birthday and kinda regret it. Most subsequent gens had cheap as fuck plastic everywhere.
>>
>>724243842
>said it's built for tiny babby hands
>has weak babby hands that cramp
>>
>>724241718
basically like the wii where for the first half of its life it was getting amazing games like nearly every month and then for the latter half of its life was nothing and waiting for the thing to die

You have every right to be, too. Not only the best DBZ RPG, but one of the best on the systems.

Zoomers are some of the most disgusting people I have met.

>>
>>724241718
It alright.
Had the silver model, traded it in for a crimson red DS Lite when that one released. Kinda wished I didn't cause I lost the D-Pad lottery with the DS Lite, but on the other hand, I didn't really play that many games that required extensive diagonal inputs, plus the extra battery life was a huge perk.

I miss the DS and the feeling of that era.
Everything felt more genuine, people were cooler. I know some of you other Anons feel it too, some of you said so already.
I want to go back
>>
>>724250493
>240p screen
>terrible sticks
>IPS lottery
>shit performances
>proprietary charging port
nah
>>
>>724241718

It was a nice handheld console. I had the silver DS. I was poor though and played only 3 DS titles (Mario64, Pokemon Diamond, FF Echoes of Time). I mostly played GBA games on it.

I played with it until the silver rubbed off, it hinge broke, and it couldn't read DS games anymore.

I want to emulate it now but using a touch screen on an emulator sounds like shit. Is there a good dual screen chinkheld that can play both NDS/3DS games?
>>
I've been using my n3dsxl a lot recently after putting homebrew on it that i wasn't aware of
>>

tech used to be fun, even if it was kinda scuffed or awkward. today its all about exploiting your wallet or mind some way or another and whether you actually enjoy or benefit from the technology youre using is completely secondary. its pretty ass.
