This game is less than 7GB of storage size
Where did optimization go?
>>

i think sekiro is a lot more impressive
>>

file size is mostly texture,
classic wow was like 4GB
>>
>>724242808
14 gb if I recall correctly
>>
>>724242695
>This game is less than 7GB of storage size
it looks like it should be less than 2gb
>>
>>724242695
>Where did optimization go?
nowhere. todays textures are much higher res so obviously require more storage space.
if however you compress those textures to save space but have to decompress them again while playing then that will add extra load to the CPU and GPU and lower frame rates, so you dont.

like high frame rates? the price to pay is large files.
>>
>>724242695
Devs making everything 1080 or 4k textures that the normal person will never see bloating the file size to like 150-250 gigs. Literally the biggest problem in gaming is devs needlessly chasing photo realism while having the actual gameplay come secondary
>>

You could have told me it's less than 700MB and I'd believe you.

90gigs are a bloat, but Im impressed how well Doom Eternal runs overall. Its insane with everything that happens on the screen.

OG Dark Souls 1 is less than 5 gb and could fit on a ps2 dvd.
I don't know if the ps2 could run it at a stable framerate, considering the PS3 couldn't either
Not due to the game being super advanced, just From's being sorta bad programmers
Now that I think about it, later ps2 dvds could hold up to 8 gbs, meaning a lot of ps3 games could fit in there
I wonder how many ps3 games could a ps2 reasonably run

Wrong. File size is mostly audio, in every game. Textures weigh almost fucking nothing. Even the mega-autistic uncompressed 2K HD texture packs people release for games with countless textures like Skyrim are less than 2gb.

If your game has textures taking up more than 10gb, then you're a shit fucking developer that has no fucking idea what you're doing, with zero exceptions. Anyone who believes textures take up 500gb of space are arguably mentally retarded.
>>
>>724243009
Sound is a much bigger problem than textures
Everything that is visual can be compressed a lot without losing qualituly with today's tech
When you have 100 thousand voicelines (+ multiple languages), 100 hours of OST and a milion sound effects?
Good luck trying to fit them all in less than 50+ gbs without compressing them so much it becomes a garbled mess

Game sizes exploded during the 8th gen, which coincides with the rise of deferred rendering and PBR.
>>
>>724243009
Your game would weigh nothing if it only had English shipped as the language, it's bundling every fucking language because the publisher doesn't feel like distributing and updating multiple distributions of the game for each language that bloats your filesize.
>>
>>724243732
gonna be honest, I have never played a game that is 500GB or even close to it
>>
>>724244568
I don't understand why selecting which language pack you want to install when downloading a game isn't industry standard
>>
>>724242695
>Where did optimization go?
Devs realized gamers would just download a 250gb COD game anyways so there was no point, and they were right.

>>
>>724243732
>File size is mostly audio
Uncompressed audio at that.
And uncompressed textures.
>>
>>724245180
because the industry standard is being lazy, which is why unreal is industry standard now
>>
>>724245180
Publishers try to work as little as possible, language selection means maintaining multiple SKUs of the same product title
>>
>>724245180
would require work, which means paying someone and they'd rather find ways to not pay people than fix things
>>
>>724242695
>Where did optimization go?
Bad management.
>Skip out on compression
>Don't even make time to hit checkboxes for optimization
>Just ship every uncompressed texture for every resolution and every audio file for every language with every release
>Manager sees big number and thinks its KWALITY so he insists on not compressing it
Though really a major culprit is that console games just stopped being smart and decided that they all had to have full camera control on the most budget, budget hardware imaginable, so they got made fun of when all of their textures were compressed pixelshit.
>>724244431
Piracy is the only thing that will save culture from total collapse in the face of corrupt world governments mandating global copyright.
Consolidating publishers own almost all 20th and 21st century culture due to the sheer scale demanded to stay on top of this shit being infeasible for an independent actor, even when adapting public domain works.
>>
>>724243580
>I don't know if the ps2 could run it at a stable framerate
It wouldnt mostly due to big polycount and physics
>>
>>724245493
it has like 2 assets
>>
>>724247753
What if we disabled the ragdoll and rendered each model with a small polucount
>>

Not a very good example.
>>
Wasn’t Oblivion only like 2 or 3 gb on 360
>>
>>724244181
>hours of unpacking
You know how to avoid that on your shitty potato PC? Buy the game on Steam, where you actually own games (unlike GOG, who rents you a license they can revoke at any time).
>>724250815
It had lower quality assets since it was targeted at 720p. The disc is 4.2GB on PC, and that's after compression.
>>
>>724250815
Skyrim was 11gb. On second thought, maybe not the best example.
>>
Its actually insane how huge of a jump in file sizes happened between the PS3 and PS4 gen. You went from games often being 2 or 3 gb to often being 50 to 100 gb or more. I supposed you could say the jump from snes games to ps1 game file sizes was maybe bigger but the PS3 to PS4 one was more noticeable due to downloads.
>>
>>724251002
I am certain Skyrim can be unbloated to fit an PS2 disk
>>
>>724251194
Averages
NES to SNES: 15 kb to 2 mb
SNES to PS1: 2 mb to 400 mb
PS1 to PS2: 400 mb to 1.5 gb
PS2 to PS3: 1.5 gb to 6 gb
PS3 to PS4: 6 gb to 60 gb
PS4 to PS5: 60 gb to 90 gb
>>
>>724251194
>>724251772
At least the jump between the 4th to 5th gen was justified, since it was centered around CD technology allowing for more data to be stored more compactly compared to cartridges (with similar but less drastic changes occurring during the transition from 5th to 6th and 6th to 7th gen following the respective transitions from CD to DVD tech and DVD to Blu-ray tech).

The increase in the average filesizes of games after that is a matter of developers and publishers just being lazy about optimization and not caring about or being remotely reasonable about there being so much uncompressed data (mostly audio/video like people have said before but also textures add to this problem) and not allowing the user to choose what audio/video files they want to install on their system. It's just laziness on everyone's part.
>>
>>724242695
>Where did optimization go?
People want baked lighting in high fidelity games and that massively bloats filesize.
>>
>>724242695
Cut scenes, bro, cut scenes. Movie games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Death Stranding have cut scenes every five minutes. Cut scenes take up enormous amounts of storage space.
>>
>>724252574
the 360/ps3 gen was full of movie games and they still had small file sizes
>>
>>724252574
This doesn't make sense, those games have their cutscenes rendered in real time with in-game engine, they don't take up extra space except for the audio track
>>
>>724242963
>like high frame rates
High frame rates? Where?

>>
>>724252998
Oh wait I forgot to turn on DLSS. What's that do again
>allow the majority of the graphics pipeline to run at a lower resolution for increased performance, and then infer a higher resolution image from this that approximates the same level of detail as if the image had been rendered at this higher resolution.
>>
Nice N64 textures, friend
>>
>>724242808
>>724242873
fromsoft engine is based on phyreengine or someshit. they're basically 360/ps3 tier games.
>>
And then you have HD2 which is bloated to literally 3x the console filesize on PC because it has HDD support in current year+10 so all files are stored in triplicate
>>
Titanfall 1 was 60 or 70gb and 90% of it was uncompressed audio
>>
Why cant modern games just pop up an option to let you only download say 1080p or 1440p textures if you are not planning to play in 4k?
>>
>>724242695
because shut up and buy a new graphics card and a new ssd

How is copyright bad?
>>
>>724258609
Monopolies. Copyright is used not by the little guy to get compensation for his work but by companies who buy up everything thing and then use Copyright to beat down competitors.
>>
>>724259097
Okay but in the context of most video games how is it bad
You're paying for a product that was made by a studio that got funding to make the product, how would piracy be justifiable in this situation
Seems you're talking about in the context of DOOM or whatever where nobody that made it makes a penny from a sale anymore
>>
>>724258609
Because the law is tailored to large, inefficient multinational corporations that mostly just engage in law firm dickwaving until one side runs out of money and they settle extralegally.
It encourages rampant consolidation and stifles innovation, while allowing companies to apply a totally incompatible law to smaller companies and individuals as long as they have money to burn on it.
Culture has slowed down more and more as IP law has developed a broader reach, more thorough enforcement and a longer duration, because even works that enter the public domain aren't free to use in all cases.
>>
>>724243732
Starfield has 51.7 GB of textures and 25.7 GB of audio files. For some reason face animations take up 17.2 GB while the whole rest of animations is 207 MB.
Modern games do have a problem with textures. Older games used to ship with diffuse texture + one bump map and that was it. PBR textures have like 10 different maps.
>>
>>724243732
It's actually the 3d models with a shit ton of polygons.
