>spend nearly a decade of my life developing a video game>have growing delusions of this being my big financial and artistic breakthrough as release approaches>end up with a handful of people posting about it for a week and some change, then never mentioned anywhere on the internet ever againokay, this is epic...
shoulda done roofing
>>724257106>enter a highly competitive market where you compete with possibly millions of other indie devs all around the world>don't win >wtf bros!?learn to plumb
>a handful of people posting about it for a weekNot too bad. I just finished a "game" (CYOA Text) that has 4 reviews on the Interactive Fiction Database and 1 post in a forum about it. I thought it was pretty good.
>>724257535based realistic expectation haver.
>>724257106Pizzer is our wordYou can say pizza
>>724257106I can make pizza myself for 0$ I pirate all the ingredients from my mom's kitchen
>>724257743Oh, no, I didn't make the game. I mean I completed playing it. It's from 2018.I guess that should be what OP should be focusing on. Odds are more people will occasionally flock to your game out of curiosity if it has some interesting stuff to it.
>>724257106>>end up with a handful of people posting about it for a week and some change, then never mentioned anywhere on the internet ever againMost indie games get no players whatsoever. Consider yourself lucky.

>>724260414Someone will tell him to buy an ad.
>>724257106What's your game anon?
>>724257446Honestly it's not that bad. Most indie games are utter dogshit or don't deserve to exist in any way. I tried to find competition and there was nothing, every time I post at all about my game 30+ people play it. My solo project is approaching 3000 people who have played and I barely try. Getting viral success or conversations flowing about your game isn't guaranteed or a quick thing that you can conjure up. Becoming a household name requires people seeing your shit multiple times from multiple different sources. Having multiple people all suddenly click and put their interest into your thing is a hard thing to make happen. Keep updating your game and posting about it and see if things snowball from there.
>>724257106solo dev is one of the most depressing careers someone can involve themselves in. Yet people still do it, A LOT. It really boggles the mind. It's quite retarded yet endearing. But anyway, almost every time someone says this and then shows their game its plainly obvious no one was going to care about it.
>>724262285Yeah, me. But more specifically:[Buy a fucking ad]Now to go find some threads to post that to.
>>724257106That’s a real fuckin’ pizzer.

Why's it so hard for amateur game devs to start small and remake pong or something first so they're not over-investing in something too ambitious to pay back the cost?
>>724257106goblinism dev?
Make a better game next time.
>>724262619I made a thread sort of like this, basically just asking in a /v/ thread whether or not I'm allowed to post about my own game, and everybody started putting pressure on me to post the game. I posted it, and this is the game:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzE3f6Mb0A8Very simple programmer style graphics, developed on and off over a few years in my spare time. The whole thread was extremely positive and I actually almost cried because I was expecting people to be mean and nobody was. People were genuinely rooting for me and one guy was even like "Thank you so much for making this, this is the exact type of game I wanted to see made" or something like that. I think if your game is ambitious enough and you have the will to push through very frustrating problems you'll be able to create something that people naturally respond positively to. I have a second game and it also receives mostly very positive feedback.

People should only make indie games for love. It's probably not going to make you any money.
>>724263115People are supprisingly kind when you post things you made on here. How many people in the thread would actually buy an interesting indie game?People complain about the same handful of companies owning everything but then don't support competition.

Want someone to read your stories or look at your art? SNORE. Attach a match-3 puzzle game to it? Suddenly you're popular>can show modicum of dev progress and gain a big following, just getting high on attention even if you don't finish making the gameDoesn't seem that crazy.
>>724270001>Attach a match-3 puzzle game to it? Suddenly you're popularShows how far standards have fallen
>>724257106>>have growing delusions of this being my big financial and artistic breakthrough as release approachesYou make games because you want to actually play and have fun with the game you're making. I've spent hundreds of hours on mods that I never published anywhere simply because they were created to very specifically suit my playstyle and no other playstyle. My hobbies are video games, anime, and sex, and money will only be used so I can keep indulging in those 3 things
