It's fairly dead but you can still get action if you have five to ten minutes of patience. I was doing a replay and dropping my sign everywhere/getting invaded/invading the past couple weeks but the servers have been absolutely awful. They're up for hours then down for hours, daily.

I just entered the rainy castle place. And I can't summon or be summoned or invade for shit. Man why is it always when I actually have free time I hate it.

Huh, that's the one place that you would most want to have online in the game since the boss fight has a special player summoning mechanic.

That said, the player summoning mechanic usually just didn't work anyway, even when the game was new I usually just ended up fighting the generic NPCs

I think I got one other player summoned by Mirror Knight once out of all my hundreds of hours in the game. I forget the mechanics of it but assume it was very rare for someone to invade in the area and actually get picked for the boss fight.

Inversely in Demons Souls back on PS3 I used to get summoned to be the Old Monk all the time when I was trying to get summoned for Coop. I hated it. Okay it was fun occasionally.

It used to happen all the time when the game was active. I hated that boss. I always end up playing offline in souls to avoid invasions anyway.

not only was it rare, a lot of people also just killed the boss before he could ever summoned anymore
