Well they are rather different in their format, not even the story is strictly adhering to the original so far and it is very much a remake of it rather that just

Which would lend the old game to some merit for those that feel like it because it is different enough.

the old game is worth playing. While the remake follows the same outline, it has too much extra qualities that make it an experience on its own. Basically what I am trying to say is that going back to the original isn't simply a downgrade in graphics or battle system and everything else is the same, nor is the remake just added extra fluff like new npc interactions but overall the same thing. The same idea is in the core of both games, but told differently. Also the original is a complete beginning to end story with MUCH better pacing.

Yes:
it's the superior, finished game.

Meanwhile, the outsourced, unfinished Unreal Engine DEmake is a fucking SEQUEL to the original FF7, AND its half a dozen or so sequels and spinoffs from the past 25 years.
