why the fuck do people keep playing fighting games this old
not even melee is this stupid

they just don't make em like that anymore

because they like it. i still play 3rd Strike, it's just more fun than anything current

theory of mind usually develops at an early life age, anon

how the fuck do people derive fun from competition and exertion when there are games that hand fun to you on a silver platter
>>
Most modern fighting games are significantly worse than their older counterparts, why the fuck would people not want to play the old ones instead?
>>
>>724279003
Because the FGC is one of the most crabs in a bucket genres out there. New games are celebrated for their time, but because they weren't "the peak of the FGC" or "the game that I grew up playing" they get left behind for the old broken pieces of shit that everyone loved but no one played.

That being said, MVC2 is the biggest example of that, because at least games like Third Strike, Melee and whatnot are games anyone can get into, against tag slop where you don't get to play, now featuring top 1 teams and balance so bad you'd think it was in beta.

When it comes to fighting games this is almost 100% true, yes.
Street Fighter has much, MUCH better entries than 6, Tekken has much better entries than 8, Guilty Gear was better in many ways before Strive and so on.
There's not even a current Marvel so that part of the conversation is pointless.

Because no other game offers the sheer speed and decision making required. Say we have a Magneto jumping at you round start. What the fuck do you do? Call an anti-air assist like Captain Commando? Magneto might airdash down back to dodge it entirely and punish the assist call with an assist of his own. Meet the Magneto in the air? Up Back and pray? Or what if the magneto just does empty tri-dash into cr.lk? What if Magnus does a box dash instead of tri. dash? What if Mags straight up delays the timing on his move to force a whiff? There's a lot of factors going on at once. You have to be cognizant of all the options all at once, it's not lucky guessing either. Each option has to be weighed carefully. You have to make that call on every single interaction.

Say you get combo'd. The typical play is to do a reset and you're dealing with a fucked up mix. Magneto has a ton of options besides just doing the mindless rushdown, and assists opens up a lot of shit. Not only are you dealing with 50/50s and testing your reactions, you're also dealing with timings. Each read is a massive dopamine hit, and every decision matters significantly. You could throw a round after doing everything correctly, playing to proper fundamentals and still lose because of a small, almost insignificant error. Or you mess up your timing on offense and use the exact same timing and whoops your offense wasn't good enough gg go next.

It's simple really. Or as the retard kids call it, "just that shrimple"
>>

because the feeling and fun you get from learning and doing challenging things is very rewarding.
plus, the games I play I think are very good. they are just fun to play as-is.

you should play good games and derive fun from playing them properly, instead of just using games as a dopamine hit service.
it's kind of sad to me you see things this way. you're depriving yourself of good things

If you're serious, he's talking about Street Fighter III's parry mechanic. By pressing forward with the right timing you can parry an opponent's attack which gives you more active frames and lets you counter attack. It's a risk reward system because you have to drop your block to parry so if you mess up the timing you get hit. But a TAS or theoretically perfect player with perfect timing could just parry everything and win. If your opponent is better at parrying than you it can be an immensely unfun experience.

Yeah I should have been a bit more specific I guess, I know how Parry works, I was indirectly calling him a dumb faggot for implying it works like "a rhythm game" which is an extremely oversimplified, disingenuous explanation for it.
Yours is a lot better but like you said, in the end it boils down to the better player winning, which is kind of the opposite of what he said since he's saying parry allows you to "scam" wins.

>>
>>724283753
Ah, sorry I didn't get it. I'm on your side though, for players of similar skill level parrying seems like a fine addition and SF3 is certainly popular so the FGC seems to like it. The main criticism I've heard is that it's over-centralizing to the gameplay but that doesn't seem to stop it from being one of the most popular Street Fighters.

I'm no SF3 expert, but I'll answer as best I'm able. Anybody feel free to correct my dumbass.
>whats the risk reward between dodge and parry?
I'm assuming you mean jumping in the air and blocking? It really depends on what you're going for. You very well could keep walking forward and parry whatever comes your way, but each parry is a knowledge check in its own right which I'll explain below. For now just understand that it's a judgement call.
>why ever use dodge if parry lets you counter attack instantly?'
If someone's throwing fireballs at you from across the map then you're basically slow walking to them as they keep chucking. Not allowed to dash forward since you can't parry mid dash animation and that leaves you vulnerable for your opponent to walk up throw you if you get too close since you can't parry throws (you can throw escape, but if you're so focused on parrying everything then have fun reacting in time for that) or command grabs.
>does dodge have more frames?
Parry gets you back in faster, but good luck knowing what your opponent is going to do and when. Sometimes you'll want to block due to the pushback some moves induce to keep people off you if they're getting too suffocating.
>is it better to hold or tap?
You have to tap. You have no choice. See this >>724283625? That player is tapping forward on every single kick Chun-Li does. Time it wrong and you're eating damage. That's what makes the Daigo Parry so significant because anybody else would've looked at how much health they had and just accepted death by chip or try and parry but mess up the timing.

You can't block if you parry
parrying has a specific window where it's active and you're locked out of parrying for a certain amount of time afterward so you can't spam it, you have to either hard read the timing or OS it and potentially eat shit for guessing wrong
you take more damage crouching so you eat extra shit for guess parrying low
parrying doesn't guarantee a punish depending on the spacing and what exactly you're parrying
parrying is direction specific and good players will catch on to you just fishing constantly very quickly and play around it
you have to tap to get the biggest parry window, holding the direction isn't considered a "clean" input by the game and it makes the parry window shorter
>>724284975
>You very well could keep walking forward and parry whatever comes your way
not with the parry lockout, since walking forward counts as a parry input
you can get around this with an advanced technique called hadou walking, where you basically walk forward with hadouken motions so that it doesn't eat up your parry window but it has limited usage and you're still ultimately just fishing for a parry
the daigo parry is significant not just because of the execution but because he parried the first hit before the super flash, you can see him fishing for it in the original video
you don't ACTUALLY have to do that, it's possible to parry the super on reaction, but the window is much tighter and this may not have been known about at the time it happened anyway
the daigo parry is such a meme that good players avoiding a chipout these days usually wait to try and red parry the super instead (parrying out of blockstun, more difficult and a tighter window) to eliminate the guesswork and most chun lis don't even bother going for it because at this point everyone will try to do it and good players can do it consistently

the ultimate downside of parrying is that it's simply riskier than blocking and requires some level of guess

There is nothing that plays like mvc2. Even mvc3 isn't really similiar. It's the most apeshit game ever made. However, it's just not fun to play old shit forever. Fightcade is full of oldheads and newcomers. People come and go all the time. You might think "I'll never beat someone who's been playing for 20 years" but you totally can if you want to take on that challenge.

People who fight the CPU are totally pathetic though. Don't make fighting game threads if you're doing that, it's just low quality spam at that point.
>>

>fighting games are stagnate mechanics wise

daigo obviously learned all the parry patterns, yes?
the infamous clip, daigo parries justin, then does the ken special and justin doesnt parry it back (and i guess its less complex than chun?)
isnt it fair to assume that someone like justin and other players at the top of evo would also be expected to practice perfect parrying all the specials to reach that level in the first place?
or was it just less common then?

I adored SF3 for the longest until I realized that every single top 8 consists of nothing but Yun, Ken and Chun, that is literally it, you watch one top 8, you pretty much have seen all top 8's.
3rd Strike is still mad fun but only 3 characters out of the 20 that are ever being used.
Now compare that to SF4 (through it's lifespan), you have:
>best E. Ryu/Ryu: Daigo
>best Ken: Momochi
>best Akuma: Tokido
>best Gief: Snake Eyes
>best Dudley: Smug
>best Yun: Kazinoko
