Because it's a popularity contest. I've never even played e33, but I haven't seen a game have such loud and universal praise since Elden Ring. It's so blatantly obvious that it's going to win goty that it's not even an interesting debate this year.My personal gotys are Silksong, Blue Prince, and the Lies of P dlc if that counts.
China always buys out Jeff's shitty awards show. They did not last year because they did not have a direct competitor that would have been anything but too obvious. Nobody in the West played Wukong.

It will obviously win, because the behind the scenes seems crafted for that purpose. Indie game, ex-AAA devs, resurrecting a classic genre, still have pretty graphics, and it isn't locked in a single platform to give ammo to console wars like Death Stranding 2 is. Everyone gets happy. And obviously, extremely popularSo, the "message" it passes by winning GOTY is one that is pretty, and won't offend anyone. Honestly SOTE wasn’t either, but it was a lot closer. Plus LoP doesn’t have that much hype behind it, Elden Ring being in the race got people interested. That won’t happen with LoP, it will litterally only be people saying “that shouldn’t be here”.

I don't have a Switch so I haven't played Banaza, and I know that was supposedly GOTY level, but I've always been mild on Nintendo software so I doubt I'd have felt anything for it anyways. Otherwise I've played nearly every notable release for 2025.
