Yoshi's Story doesn't even seem to have done that well, so while it may have been the first to specifically try to appeal to young kids the series would have probably gone this way anyways. I think it's more likely that Yoshi's Story was a result of them deciding to use Yoshi to appeal to that audience rather than the other way around.

I think they shouldn't have labeled Story as a sequel to Island as they're different type of games (both are 2D platformers yes but they're very different, as Island is more standard platforming action compared to Story who was trying to mix platforming-action with score attack-style of gameplay).
But again, coming from Island would end in dissapointment no matter what.
