Violence wasn't so easily accessible back then. You couldn't google "my mom naked" and find the most disgusting gore at will.

it was a new concept at the time. people had never seen such violence in products aimed at kids, at least not interactive ones. we take for granted now that it was just cornball cheese that had no effect on anyone but that's with the benefit of hindsight, people always freak out when they are faced with something new.
