Nintendo didn't really do them any favors with the story and characters on this one, but the roster is just so poor compared to Age of Calamity. The sages literally don't have faces and were entirely non-characters in TOTK. At least in BOTW, you met with the spirits through their beast storylines.

Yes, because Celica mattered so much for Smash.
You already know the roster was basically Altea's top picks and then Awakening (the savior of the series for better or worse, and despite taking place centuries after Marth's games) and then Fates (the then-most recent one during development).
Lyn was in there because she's the most popular overseas unit with her own fans in JP.
Celica - whose game released several months before - was in there to shill Echoes sales and recency bias, also to slot in another female unit.
The rest of the DLC was more picks from the aforementioned 3 worlds. And Anna.
