Be honest with me for once /v/Is HDR a meme?
>>724306284Define meme
>>724306284Considering that every single example of HDR can be seen with a normal human monitor, yes, it's a meme.
>>724306284No, but poorfags will argue it is.
>>724306330The image on the right will be as bright as the image on the left if you were using an HDR monitor. And you still would be able to see the small details.
>>724306330retard
>>724306284left looks better and realistic.have you ever watched an explosion? I've seen a few power transformer explosions and they are always blinding for an instant, just like left.
I have a HDR monitor and don't understand what it does or why it's supposed to be betterhalf the time I turn it off for old games where it just fucks with the colours making shit quadruple red or whatever and then forget to turn it back on for newer games for weeks at a time
>>724306284HDR is a meme because each game, each movie, each content that uses HDR requires 1 person to tune it up. So it is 1 person you are placing all your trust in delivering something that would be pleasant to you too. SDR you can modify it but HDR only has 1 setting and it's usually with highlights so bright your eyes get seared like a well-done steak. Not exactly the best way to play video games for hours. You will go blind.HDR in movies is less bad because people there usually understand what they are doing but when it comes to games that's a whole other story. Most games actually look worse with HDR.
I have a super expensive HDR monitor and I literally never use HDR because it always comes with some annoying side-effect, like making some game or program or windows look weird, I tried fucking around with settings, but now I'm already annoyed I have to do that, and again, there will always be some side effectturned that shit offJust like RTX lmaoEverything sucks
>>724306421but why would I pay to flashbang myself and receive no benefit?
>>724306284No, but HDR zones are.An OLED with 1000 nit highlights is better than an LCD with 1000 nit fullscreen while blooming like hell.
>>724306284I got a 4K QD-OLED, and the thing I like most about it is the HDR. Takes some time to figure out, need to use a custom color profile (because microsoft fucked up) and set up RTX HDR. But after that all content just becomes +50% better visually. I still didn't get used to it.
>>724306284>is it a meme to have more color depth and vibrancy without blowing out the brightness so bad that it just looks like bright blobs? No, anon. No it isn't. What the meme is is developers who put it in as an option in their game but don't know how to actually make it work right
My laptop intelligently enables HDR when appropriate in a way my PC does not despite using the same Auto HDR settings. I don't know whyon my PC it's just annoying, but on my laptop "it just works" and it is quite beautiful. But then I hardly ever use my laptop monitor, even when using it, so what a waste I suppose
>>724306284HDR is really good. Sadly I am not using it because SOMEHOW we do not have a unified image standard to create usable screenshots while using it.Absolute retard state of tech.
>>724307001even windows game bar saves hdr and non-hdr screenshots for you
HDR is fantastic...when it works. The real bullshit is right now it is often broken in various means AND requires some technical knowledge to configure when it should just be a case of turn on, the display reports (via EDID) its correct specs to the host system which in turn behaves correctly.Instead we get shit like switch 2's broken calibration screen, capcom's use in RE remakes where they are crushing the wider colour space the rendering pipeline uses (most games these days are 10bit internally anyway) down to SDR and then expanding it back out when turning HDR on, completely botching the job. Or games just using Rec.709 still when HDR is enabled which defeats the point. Properly tuned HDR on an oled though is amazing.>>724306765The TrueBlack Vesa standards are better than any of the regular DisplayHDR because LCDs suck due to dimming zones and miniLEDs don't escape blooming either. >>724307001JXR handles the HDR data at the very least.
>>724307235Yeah it gives me one normal good looking screenshot in an unusable format and a fucking supergrey png file. It's and and people should feel bad.At least videos don't have this issue.
>>724307352> one normal good looking screenshot in an unusable format and a fucking supergrey pngyou need... more instructions?
>>724307443I don't want instructions. I want the damn thing to put a usable screenshot that looks like the game I played into my screenshot folder.
Cyberpunk with corrected HDR is pretty nice I gotta say.
>>724306284HDR cert and the actual picture quality that you see are entirely different things.Virtually everyone has an improperly calibrated panel to begin with. Color space and gamma are way off. Base tech specs of the panel itself prevent true HDR in practice in most cases. Can't have super bright highlights next to blacks when the panel relies on some grid based local dimming.
>>724307786Most oleds these days come well calibrated out of the box.
I'm not buying anything I have to configure or calibrate
>>724307876You should never trust that unless its a professional oriented monitor that claims to be accurate. Everyone should have one of the cheap little cameras for checking color accuracy.
>>724307917>doesn't play vidya at all.>>724307940Reviews from good sources like RTings and TFTCentral can and do show accuracy. That still glosses over people needing to clamp their wide gamut screens down to srgb for SDR content, which most do not.
>>724308017They can only show accuracy of the singular panels they test. There is a wide range of variance within the batches of panels produced which is why you as the end user should always check and adjust as necessary.
>>724308090This is why reading multiple reviews to get an idea of variance is good. Plus many monitors at least (lmao TVs) come with a factory calibration report with the panel. I've got an ancient spyder calibration tool I keep meaning to bust out and see what it reports for my oled just for fun.
>>724306580this, i don't even use it, 99% of the time the diff is nothing like OP's pic and you can only tell the diff when you see 2 pics side by side.
>>724306630Yeah, playing Elden Ring on HDR almost killed my eyes.
I just use windows ACM to clamp my screen for SDR purposes.
>>724306284It is good when integrated properly and using a good display. On consoles its amazing, on pc it's meh due to Microsofts incompetence. RTX HDR is pretty cool tho>>724306580If youre playing old games that dont have HDR support then HDR shouldn't kick in, unless you got AutoHDR enabled in the windows settings. Also, HDR on cheap monitora suck, its only good on OLED/MiniLED panels>>724308267What's wrong with TVs? Lots of people use 42" LG OLEDs as monitors.
>>724308459Elden ring HDR dims the game and just makes the magic effects look like LED lights
>>724306330Retard,use a OLED and a normal Monitor Side by side.fucking poor fag
HDR looks incredible on 1500 - 2500 nit OLED TVs. It looks impressive even on 1000 nit OLED monitors, but it always looks like ass on LCD panels. I assume that people who don't like HDR have LCD monitors with fake HDR.
>>724308625>What's wrong with TVs? TVs play a lot more loosey goosey with being accurately calibrated to get that "punch" in SDR that people like. Usually setting colour temp wrong.
>>724306552And have you been in the dark? Dark rooms, hallways, caverns, even outside when there is little moon, heck even there's full moon. It's hard to discern anything. Yet 90% of games out there doesn't have this realism. It's always brighter so you could see in dark places with little to no light sources. Heck even monitors have """"gayme"""" modes that brightens out the dark areas so you get an edge in FPS or whatever. When Fallout 4 came out, and games were only starting to get volumetric physics, first thing I did, and the only mod I used, was to darken the nights completely. Absolute darkness and only flash lights and all that volumetric lighting and fogs effects was kino. But then again it's broken, why? Because enemies could still still see you in the dark, so it breaks the immersion/illusion.
>>724309643STALKER with pitch black nights is great. Certainly works well in CoP where you can sleep to pass time. In mods for far cry 2 where it gets dark that enhances the experience.
I demand any AA or higher budget horror games come with correctly implemented HDR from now on. They are THE best genre to utilise it so devs need to sort their shit out.
>>724306284I have a OLED TV with HDR and a OLED monitor with HDR. I always turn it off because everything looks so fake real with HDR.
>>724306284It's not but how well it is implemented varies wildly from game to game and somehow a lot of devs fuck it up horribly. If you want a good example of HDR play Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart
>>724310136basically a retard
>>724306284I'll tell you once I buy OLED monitor.
>>724311010dont need an oled for hdr>>724310648t. retard using a TN monitor in 2025
>>724311297MiniLED isn't worth it, only slightly cheaper than OLEDs but only advantage is no burn-in.
>>724311297>dont need an oled for hdrYou kinda do if you don't want blooming to destroy the image whenever there is a difference in luminance.
>>724306284>see how much better hdr looks on your sdr monitor!
>>724311520>only advantage is it doesn't fucking die in 3 yearsGee anon, I wonder why people don't like oled.
>>724306421HDR monitors are designed to keep light bleed to a minimum. It would no look like the left unless on some chinkoid monitor lying about it's specification.
>>724311607>die in 3 yearslol this meme is so funnyhe thinks seeing a bit of a shade on a specific solid color = dead display>>724311560depends on the monitor or TV, some prioritize brightness and some prioritize bloom suppression.
>>724306284I have a monitor that's supposed to have not god tier but solid hdr according to rtings but whenever I try to enable it, the overall screen becomes more dim (so the highlights can really pop) and I immediately disable it back.Maybe if I used it all the time I would get used to it but I don't really care for it that much.
>>724311619are you retarded
>>724311941why dont you tell us what monitor it is, or are you one of those pajeets that starts sperging out saying NO ONE REMEMBERS THAT ?plus this retard probably doesnt even know about the sdr brightness slider in windows 11.
>>7243063301. Oppic is jpg, and jpg doesn't support HDR. You're looking at SDR picture.2. If you open HDR picture on a SDR monitor the only difference you'll see is produced by tonemapping algorithm.
>>724306284Yes because most games don't have real HDR.
The problem with HDR is it doesn't just work, it's literally a skill issue when configuring your shit properly. The whole space feels like it's not actually ready for market, a consumer shouldn't have to do a research project to make sure their bing bing wahoo is getting the proper HDR output on their display.
>>724312035>plus this retard probably doesnt even know about the sdr brightness slider in windows 11.Just max it out.
>>724311607Yea it's a trade off. But I haven't seen many burned in OLED monitors, many mistake image retention with it.Given my usage I doubt it would become unusable so soon.
I just use HDR to view virtual japan tours.
>>724312078you dont have to do anything thoughturn hdr on using the keybindenjoy hdr games that have hdrenjoy movies that are in an hdr format (hdr10, dv, hdr10+, you'll know if you download them) played via VLC in d3d11 or mpc video renderer. you dont have to do shit.
>>724312035Why are you sperging at me, retard? Right, the fact that I posted a meme laughing at indians unprompted clearly indicates that I am a pajeet myself.Of course I do remember what monitor I fucking own but I won't say because you are being rude for no reason, fuck you. It has 8/10 for hdr on rtings, I assume they know what they're talking about.
>>724312338>i know>but i wont saylol so he doesnt know and its probably shit
>>724312078>consumer shouldn't have to do a research project to make sure their bing bing wahoo is getting the proper HDR output on their displayConsumers should always do their research on anything, especially PC hardware and software. People with mentality like yours are the reason why we can't have nice things.
>>724312276Except that is wrong. Many games - like say, cyberpunk - will assume peak nits of 1000 out of the box. If your screen does more or less than that you'll be either crushing the highlights or the image will come out too dim.For games that poll windows you also NEED to create an .icm profile of the display's capabilities or again, anything relying in that will be wrong.
>>724312078>it's literally a skill issue when configuring your shit properly.if I need to have skill to turn on my monitor and look at it, I will pass and get a monitor that doesn't require skillI have enough skills to learn and manage as it is.
>HDR10>HDR10+>DOLBY VISION
>>724312437in cyberpunk you just set the max brightness to 1000 and tonemap to 1.0, are you slow or something>for games that poll windowsthose dont have good hdr implementation so you should skip them anyway
>>724312498HDR10 is the default format.DV and HDR10+ allow dynamic metadata meaning individual scenes in movies can have different peak brightness levels for hdr. While in just HDR10, the entire movie has the same set peak brightness. Games are just HDR10. Theres no actual DV or HDR10+ games.
>>724312637Some frostbite games support DV, like NFS Heat.
>>724312782This is really cool, I've never seen it explained like this before
>>724312559>for games that poll windows>those dont have good hdr implementation so you should skip them anywayYou're retardGames that "don't poll" Windows are using Windows scRGB standard which is ill defined and you have to configure HDR brightness in every game (and those settings will vary from game to game because again mastering environment is not defined).Games that "poll" Windows are using HDR10 PQ and actually good if you configured your display properly using Windows setting. Great example: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
>>724312782cant wait for the TN sdr lets
>>724312907It's the closest thing to explain how HDR works using SDR content only.
>>724306284No, HDR is not a meme by any metric. HDR is what we should've had from the very start but when we had CRTs nobody thought about it and the other tech stack wasn't there and when LCDs dropped they had contrast so shit it was pointless. If you think ray tracing is a meme, fair enough. If you think upscaling fake and gay and framegen is the literal devil, cool. But if you're against HDR you are a fucking retard. It has no performance impact and is a straight upgrade in every regard. But that's just the theory. In practice HDR implementation is a mess and if you just dislike dealing with it I get it because so do I. But disliking HDR as in the tech itself is like disliking rendering at higher framerate because some engines shit themselves by not implementing delta timesteps.
>>724312426People with money value their time, products should just work. You are clearly a poor jeet.>>724312276You have no idea what you're talking about. If just turning on HDR was all it took to get the proper experience I wouldn't be making this post.
HDR is a meme in the same way that stereo is a meme.
>>724313102can tell you dont have an hdr display
>gta iv>fusion fix>autohdr>illium's black level fix>mfw seeing star junction
Do you think boobs look better in HDR?
>>724313352Only a little but the pinker the skin the better it will look due to the extension into the red shades. I.e pussy looks better.
>>724306284Its not a meme, it makes the game have better contrast and colors while maintaining detail. Its just a chore to use because developers cant properly implement it 75% of the time on PC. Its has better support and standards on consoles.
>>724312637Does the point of dynamic metadata even apply for video games given as a medium they inherently have full control over each individual pixel that is displayed?
Those HDR 100% sRGB monitors are for artists no? Why would you have one?
>>724313195Not him but HDR is not plug n play. Your TV or monitor will be in either HDR10 or HGiG mode where it processes the metadata differently. Some games expect HGiG e.g. RE Engine and some expect HDR10 e.g. Cyberpunk 2077.Some games let you adjust the luminosity values and some don't. And those who do are inconsistent in telling you what values exactly you're adjusting. Some expect your display to tonemap the peaks automatically e.g. they just pasthrough "this is 1500 nits" and if your expensive new tandem OLED that is 500 nits doesn't tonemap it, you'll just get blown out whites. And that will depend on whether it's in HDR10 or HGiG AND the specific model. Then you have the fucking mess with EOTF curves which is also dependent on the HDR mode you're in but also whether you're on AMD or nvidia and the specific display you're using. And the brightness settings. Then you have different colourspaces that assume different gammas. Ideally you are supposed to use a piece wise transfer function but games just yolo it with gamma 2.2 because game developers have never heard of control theory. Then you have retarded OSes like Windows that use 2.2 gamma for all content if you enable HDR, including SDR content which expects 2.4 for historic reasons. FWIW macOS compositor and Mutter handle it properly so kudos to unix guys. idk about KWin. So enjoy your elevated blacks in SDR content. And only then on top of everything and a dozen things I've forgotten, you have shitty HDR implementations itself with crushed blacks, compressed dynamic ranges and a ton of ther issues.>PeeShit issueI wish. Somehow it's also bad on PS5, at least on the games I've tested. From what I've heard Xbox is the closest thing to a decent plug n play HDR but I haven't tested it personally because what sane person buys an Xbox today.
>>724314246Artists are using screens that go way beyond srgb these days. At least the ones buying professional grade screens companies like eizo make.
>>724314246Even budget gaming OLED monitors now cover the entire sRGB color gamut. They're like $500-700.
>>724314683Even LCD screens easily do 100% srgb these days. It isn't 2004 anymore.
>>724314850Yeah but I've just looked up a popular not-so-cheap LCD for gaming according to top seller charts and it's like 98% sRGB. So it's not a given for every model especially VA garbage.
>>724315031What is a mere 2%.
>>724306284HDR is great in everything, except the games it isn't great in. Which is about 3/4 of them.>>724315031VA is not garbage, best blacks of LCD panels and if you're using LCD and not OLED your colours are shit anyway so deal.
>>724315524VA black smear is still terrible. Even the highest rated screen in RTings database notes it as a real issue.
My TV has great HDR but it lowers the average brightness of the image compared to max brightness on SDR. Other TVs I used actually get brighter in HDR but mine allows you to absolutely crank it in SDR so where I lose brightness in the small elements, I gain an overall more consistent and brighter image which is great for gaming. So I just play in SDR.
>>724312179My nigga
>>724316251
>>724306330/thread
Fun fact: API wrappers like dgvoodoo2 and DXVK will often enable AutoHDR to trigger so by golly if I want HDR in GTA SA I can!
>>724306284Since we are already talking HDR. My brother has a projector and i really like it, i been thinking about getting one myself, one of the best things about it is how large the image is and yet it doesn't tire out my eyes, probably because its not a direct light source. So im thinking of seeking out an hdr projector on black friday. I know HDR is better on tvs, but i think i rather have eye comfort. Anyone have experience with HDR on projectors vs tvs? Anything really will be an upgrade since my current tv is a 1080p from like 2015.
>>724306284its a bit of a meme since lots of games tend to have a poor implementation of it or just straight up don't even support it but at least on PC you have modders adding & fixing up HDR for games and there's tools like RTX HDR which lets you add support for it onto most vidya that use DX9 & above
>>724306284HDR is the only way to experience screens. The difference is night and day. It makes me mad that manufacturers continue to make SDR displays for some reason.
>>724306693Honestly this. I've used HDR monitors and I'd rather keep the range compressed to the comfortable brightness of SDR
Remember SDR is meant to be displayed at 80-120 nits.
>>724306284Yes
>dude, just download more brightness and contrast lmao
Going to try outer worlds 2 with some HDR, hope it is good!
hdr, oled, ultrawide, upscaling, fake frames, and most post processing options are all memes. dealing with the flaws of oled will always lose out to a good modern ips panel. hardware threads on v should be pruned on sight alongside twitter caps, eceleb, nintendr*ne, chart, and many many other subgenre threads.

>>724306689>just like RTXCap
>>724306284looks pretty in elden ring, looks bad in bf6 (brightness in this game is fucked though in general), so it mostly depends on the game IMO. I like the higher brightness, but i hate the way it makes unrelated things go darker (even during general browsing and movies). It also fucks with the intended experience, since it's mostly an afterthough. So i say it's a meme but a pretty good one when it works out of the box (calibrating brightness, ui brightness and peak nits for it - absolutely annoying).
>>724322106>I like the higher brightnessEveryone does as that is how human eyes work. Just pump brightness and contrast in an SDR image and 90% of anons will say it looks better. Hell that is the entire reason ENB exists and the million "mods" that use it.
>>724322067Ever since Battlefield 5 I'm in the habit of turning that shit off for better performance and to avoid glitchy ugliness. In every gameDespite the 2000$ videocard

>>724306284No. But PC games still often have shit HDR implementations. HDR has no cost to the user aside from a more expensive monitor (OLED or FALD) but takes extra work from the game dev.

>>724317329I used to use a projector. I can't imagine a good HDR experience with one because projector contrast is incredibly poor. You have to have an ideal projecting surface (which is probably a fairly expensive dedicated screen) and more importantly, your room has to be pitch black. It's an entire home decor project and it really adds a lot of friction to just playing vidya.
>>724306284it's free and it looks better, understandably devs refuse to ship games with non-shit hdr

Most games don't have HDR or have broken HDR profiles. If I wasn't on PC I'd be fucking annoyed with it. I was watching my friend play Silent Hill F on his PS5, buddy had to turn HDR off to make the game look good because the HDR profile was very washed out.
I hope resident evil 9 has good HDR.

No, I use it in every game even though sometimes you have to install mods that fix it because the developer don't care. I use RTX HDR in games that don't support it at all and it's still way better than SDR.
