was this game like a big wake up call to the industry that gamers don't actually care about graphics, or massive hollywood production, or complex story with 3D graphics or 500 hours to complete like the mainstream media have been talking for 30 years?
>>
must be a big wake up call if nobody can tell what game it is just from the screenshot
buy an ad faggot
>>
dunno what that is but looks like crap
>>
there is actually complex story though
they fucking hired jim sterling to write a shit ton of flavor text that no one read

No. It's just unironically "slop" for the masses. A played this a bit during the summer on vacation when taking a shit but 3 shits laters I decided I'd rather read the news that keep playing this trash

If anything, it was a wake up call that gamers don't care about gameplay.

No, because it's success is not reproducible. AAA slop with massive budget, graphics, mocap actors and shit and massive marketing budget is a more reliable way to sell copies.

the 'graphics' are excused by the price tag, nobody cares about the graphics for a game they spent 3$ on, there are millions of other better examples for that point, but that's not even true because it basically depends on the audience you're trying to aim for, not all genres, not all niches, not all types of people care about graphics in the same way that others do

as a general rule, 2D games need to be way, way prettier to succeed, while 3D can be 'low poly' and make it big (like palworld or schedule 1), but in both cases, even tho the price tags aren't as much of a difference as VS is, it's about a) the hype and b) other variables that simply outweigh any negative impact shitty graphics can have

for 3D:
a mediocre game relies on good graphics to sell anything, because it's mediocre anyways so nobody's going to be hooked on the gameplay itself (this goes for most of the AAA open world shit nowadays)

a good game doesn't rely on graphics, because the gameplay loop either provides a fresh take on a genre which has been stagnating for too long (schedule 1 and palworld both go in this category), or simply provides a gameplay loop never seen before or so wildly different it might become a genre itself (dark souls, yadda yadda)

For 2D:
graphics (and music) are king, up to the point where price is so low that people won't be bothered if the game turns out to be shit 'it's just 3$, whatever'
VS is also a very narrow exception, very little games make it big while being ugly and 2D, if your 2D game isn't very good looking and has very good music, you're basically fucked
