I quit this game late last year cause the feel bad for me despair slop of some characters was too cringe and also I was getting secondhand embarrassment over some of the pandering which felt forced.

That and watching the anniversary trailers paints a pretty clear picture of Nauyta being a (former) member of the DEEP. I speculate these mad scientist fuckers created raptures in the first place. Nauyta repents for her sins by having shattered herself to thousands of clones to track the Queen. Now she's pulling all the clones back to activate her skin super mode for the final battle. I speculate we beat the queen but the second arc will be about the Third Surface Reclamation war, dealing with billions of remaining raptures. Marian will play the lich king card (there must always be a queen) and the actual bad guys will be the remaining members of the DEEP still looking to perfect human-rapture hybrids.
