i have tried to learn how to play open ttd like 6 times and still have no idea how to play. i keep getting stuck at one of the tutorial steps and i can't progress
>>

you don't need a tutorial, literally build 2 stations and connect them then build a depot and buy a train
>>
I really want to like OpenTTD, but it’s too much of a sandbox for me. I wish it had proper scenarios like OpenLoco.

I played open transport tycoon for a week recently. Kinda fun, but i got bored if it quickly. I did a little of everything in freeplay, then it felt samey. I like rtc more. Or i guess I'd learn factorio more.

Pretty much every deal in 3K is terrible. The game won't offer you that unless your garbage overflow is so high that it'll bankrupt the city.

Sorry to borrow your thread, but I'm trying to remember a more recent commercial game that was very similar. Same isometric perspective, similar artstyle (a bit more stylized), same post-revolution/pre-modern tech era, you had separate towns with different industrial specializations connected mostly by rail.
It wasn't an open source project
Can anyone help out a senile oji-san?

A-Train Classic is more fun

Same. I always start with buses first because they're cheapest and you don't start with good money. It always results in me barely staying solvent until I just never get ahead and then give up. Building a train network requires watching a 2 hour autism youtube video and I lose interest.

Everytime I boot this game up for a minute 10 hours of my life dissappear. The mods are where things get truly insane but you need to learn the game first.

The train network is just advanced turbo autism, just connect two places like coal/powerplant and build the rail. If you're short on money just borrow as much as you need. Try to judge how many wagons you need, if the train waits too long to fill cut some, if the material keep piling up put more. Buses are basically useful to increase the town sizes. Aim at them if some subsidy pops up to give you extra money.
