This game fucking rocks, I can't believe I haven't tried it until now. For spooky week this has been an awesome way to start, even if it's not traditional "horror". What next?
>>
>>724322131
It's been in my library for years but I haven't touched it.
>>
>>724322580
i strongly recommend it, its a lot better than i thought it would be. it's like all the good parts of the system shock and bioshock evolution line.
>>
>>724323012
Installed it. Thank you, /v/ro. I'll give it a shot.
>>
>>724322131
>What next
Dead Space (not the remake)
SOMA
Amnesia
Signalis, but you can't talk about that one on /v/
>>
>>724322131
I loved it. /v/ boomers hated it when it released, not sure why.
>>
>>724322131
Based, I played Prey last year for the first time and loved it.
Btw if anyone is planning to buy it, if you get it from GOG you get the preorder bonuses included.
>>724324652
I've had SOMA in my backlog for a while, I guess now would be a good time to play it

It had the same name as another game people were awaiting a sequel for
Really unfortunate
They should have called this game Neuroshock.

I enjoyed the hell out of it. But I also love System Shock 2 and to me Prey is that games spiritual successor.

I shit you not these are the exact games I downloaded very recently for my spooky season gaming this year
I'm finishing up with Prey (I think) and will do Soma next. Painkiller is just a nice blast from the past and a change of pace
This is uncanny

Prey is fun, but one thing it does poorly is that it made shotgun/timeslow combo too fun to use. Its hard to bother with any of the fancy powers and shit when that combo and gluegun/wrench just ends everything before it becomes a threat.

Also I don't believe in any of that alien mumbo jumbo witchcraft. Not 1 neuromod point has gone into anything remotely typhon related
it's made for a real interesting playthrough thus far basically being a "human only" kind of thing and shooting phantoms in their distorted faces point blank with this baby is so satisfying
>>
>>724327307
I thought the Human only playthrough was piss easy and the Typhon only playthrough was an inventory management nightmare. Can't take any upgrades for inventory space, those are human upgrades. So I just carried around a suitcase full of bullshit everywhere with me.
>>
>>724327180
Funny that because I also didn't spec into slowmo either

It's free on GOGGames.

>>724323012
7/10 it's ok. It does combat and worldbuilding worse than Bioshock and it does imsim gameplay and story worse than System Shock. That being said I don't like horror. I enjoyed the story twists and turns of Prey and I thought the ending was ok. I played through it once, on the hardest difficulty and with survival mode, human augs only. It was fun but it was only hard in the first 2-3 sections, afterwards it became trivial. I think I would enjoy the DLC more but I didnt five it a fair shake yet, I think I was topped off on the game after the campaign playthrough so I only tried the dlc for 30 mins
>>
Best way to deal with Etheric Phantoms and Technopaths?
>>
I've never enjoyed a horror game, but I love horror vibes in non-horror games, though I've hardly played any. Any others like that?
>>
>>724328692
A shotgun.

Or what I liked to do was use that mind control typhon power so I have a teammate for a minute.
>>
You can take out Nightmare with just the pistol. It takes a lot of shots but if you get a good spot to hide or get him stuck on some crates or the geometry of the area you can easily pot shot him down while he never becomes a threat to you at all even with his homing blasts.
>>
>>724327505
>>
>>724322131
It's a masterpiece IMO.
>>
>>724327307
I prefer the alien skills. Decoy is the Blink equivalent it let's you teleport forward. And turning corpses into Phantoms is very cathartic.

Only thing is Neuroshock is by far the most powerful attack in the game, so once you get it all tension fighting anything but operators evaporates.

It's Prey, powergame and just upgrade the gun to it's fully capacity, the rest is all about stealth and lethality, get the drop with the most advantage as possible and then hide again. It's all about emergent gameplay, there is no one powergame.

Next time you guys play vidya pay close attention to checkerboard floors. They are everywhere, especially in AAA games. You get addicted through witchcraft.
>anon might say I don't believe so it doesn't affect me
That's exactly where they want you. Playing and playing in willful ignorance to the end, soul goes to hell forever.

Literally no game I've played since has quite scratched the itch the same. To me it was a perfect culmination of the games I grew up enjoying in the imsim and sci-fi horror genres.

Only criticism I have is that the enemy design needed more visual variety. The "inky squid monster" aesthetic gets kinda boring, at least compared to games like the original System Shock 1 and 2 that had a wide variety of technological and organic enemies, or games like Dead Space that have such unique looking Cronenbergian fetish creatures.

Although on the reverse of that criticism, I loved the mimics. They weren't particularly threatening overall, but they keep the tension at the right level when you're doing your inevitable imsim/survival-horror backtracking. It some ways it kind of reminds me of how the crimson heads made re-treading the mansion more tense in the RE1 remake; except instead of "was that bastard red before?", it's "why two keyboards?".
>>
>>724327307
And I also remember phantoms do flicker a lot, ey? Very bad for you.
>>
>>724334541
Forgot to include context with that image: I remember seeing trailers for that picrel like an actual decade ago, and it looked like it might be good. But I've heard little new about it in years... steam says Q4 of this year but who knows.
>>
>>724322131
It is a sweet game, like a System Shock game but with more non-combat options, similar to Deus Ex.
I would just play Silent Hill if you haven't. Emulating the PS2 will give you access to a lot of top tier horror games, including the Siren and Fatal Frame series just to name a few.
>>
The schizos here
>>
>>724333693
You want to go after the blueprint for skill points ASAP. I don't know how to describe it but I would be able to get there again in-game lol. One of my favorite things about the game.
The best combat skills are shotgun damage and the bullet time power. Increased health would also be good, but you might not be able to get that until later.

This is the important thing about Nightmare difficulty. If you get alien powers, the nightmare enemy will start spawning, and you have to be prepared for it. It will one-shot you at base HP.
The way to deal with this is to hunt down and scan the weaver enemies so you can learn the best version of their shield power. Once you have that, you can simply tank the nightmare as long as you can restore your mana to upkeep your shield.
Then you want to get the psycho shock power, the one that does single-target damage and stops the enemy from using spells. That is the perfect complement to the shotgun, and is the last thing you'll need to fuck up the nightmare every time you see it.
>>
>>724335456
>The way to deal with this is to hunt down and scan the weaver enemies so you can learn the best version of their shield power
*before you get any other alien powers

I know it's newfag baby shit but I just figured out how to filter them. Pretty excited about that. Never wanted to do that before so never learned how.

Anyway I always hated how a schism was created between fans of the other game called Prey and this one. Always seemed like a stupid argument to even have in the first place.
>>
>>724336454
As someone who enjoyed both games it seems pretty dumb too. But still this game would have fine so much better if it wasn't called Prey
>>
>>724335456
Good stuff. Will have to give this a try
>>
>>724322131
I like the game despite that it is woke as shit.
>>
Great game sabotaged by Todd.
>>
i found it to be annoyingly repetitive.
>walk in room
>scan for mimics
>loot trash
>repeat forever

i mean, the way the various powers allow you to explore in different ways was cool. but no matter which way you choose to explore, the fundamentals are the same everywhere.

now tell me i'm a retard that didn't actually play the game

It's got lesbians. And people who aren't white. So if those things trigger you to the point of anger I'd avoid it.

>people who aren't white
disgusting
>lesbians
are they the good kind or the disgusting kind?
>>
>>724334676
>Looked like it might be good
IIRC, the devs of Routine basically finished the game indie then realized they made a bad game, so they hunted for a publisher to restart development with. Before, it was a roguelike horror game, now I think it's just a straightforward first person horror game
>>
>>724339537
Personally I thought the character models were all ugly so to me the disgusting kind cause EVERYONE in the game looks disgusting. Fortunately for me that wasn't why I was playing it so while I noticed it I quickly forgot.
>>
>>724339253
>game wasn't called Prey originally
>Everyone excited for Prey 2
>Todd not only cancelled it but it comes out its a massive conjob and he ruined a company and shockingly this has been memory holed
>Wants to fuck over Arkane as they are being called "new bethesda"
>Buys them up and makes them rename the game to Prey
>Massive backlash from Prey fans pissed about Prey 2's cancellation
>Only years later do people play this and go "wait this is actually System Shock 3 what the fuck"

SOMA but play on the pussy baby mode that makes monsters harmless, the stupid Amnesia monster hiding segments really detract from the actual scary part of the game.
>>
>>724322131
>>724323012
Been loving this too, like you I wasn't expecting much but I picked it up randomly for £4 on PS4 and was so impressed I stopped playing after a few hours to get the PC version and start again with more suitable controls. It's a much better spiritual sequel to System/Bioshock than Infinite was.
>>
>>724340620
Interesting take? I've never heard of this before
>>
>>724341128
I haven't played Soma but I buy it. As I understand it the game stays upright by atmosphere and story alone, and I bet some people just get annoyed with the hide and seek portions of the game.

Dead Space and Signalis are good.
SOMA's protagonist is a brain damaged Canadian, and I'm not generalizing or exagerrating. If you want to listen to a stereotypical Canadian struggle to understand simple things for 10 hours in a walking simulator, then SOMA is for you.
Amnesia is a walking simulator with some puzzles and a little intrigue. Can't say it's bad, but it doesn't stand up to Dead Space or Signalis in terms of world building, immersion, horror, exploration, etc.

Without the monster hiding segments the game is literally a walking simulator.
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing since the story and atmosphere are great, but don't go in expecting a "game"' if you use that mode.

try the DLC too, imo it's great, maybe even better gameplay-wise
>>
>>724329008
The Nightmare literally never was a problem for me, he's just free mats.
>>
>>724322131
if you wanna break the game, abuse recycling grenades to empty out maps and get a ton of mats, and craft all the upgrades early
>>
>>724322131
This is the only single player game over 20h long that I finished twice in a year.
>>
>>724327180
It's actually the opposite. It makes everything overpowered. The game even has a specific mechanic in response to this but you're a monster by that point. It just shoves down your throat that going ham with the alien side of stuff is """bad""" so people initially avoid it.
