Some meet the traditional definition of a game and some don't. More importantly though lots of video games don't meet the traditional definition of what a game is especially games that focus on being creative like Minecraft or games that focus on narrative but can't be lost. Video game as a term has morphed to largely refer to any software whose primary purpose is entertainment so yes they are.

Literally called a novel bro. Is manga a video game if you read it on your PC?
>>724326065
Well video games should be entertainment in which the entertainment comes largely from interacting with it. If you can fully enjoy a game by just watching it, it ain’t a game.

Cool

>>724325619
if its just a click through story, then no
If there's choices that change the outcomes greatly then maybe
if they're attached to an actual game then yes (Like Phoenix Wright)

have you never read one of those "Choose your own adventure" books?

That's just your opinion you didn't present anything to assert it like I did when I gave examples of games that everyone considers video games even though they are not technically games in the strictest traditional definition. It's clear most people don't think a video game needs to be a game so I don't know why you think it needs interaction. The primary deciding factors for most people are; is it a piece of software? Is it intended for entertainment (ie Minecraft and Photoshop can both be used to make art but one is designed as an entertainment product and one is designed as utilitarian software with a purpose)?

This isn't even touching that your argument only holds true for kinetic novels which are a relatively small subset of VNs. Every other VN does have some amount of interaction. Even kinetic novels technically do because you choose when to advance the text.

Your arguments are weak as fuck.

Is a citation pointing you to a page in the references a game mechanic?
>>
>>724326534
Some dungeon crawling, tactical RPGs and (actual) dating and raising simulation are labeled as VNs though
>>
>>724328886
The choose your own adventure book I had came with CLUE SOLVING thingies and even accounted for you getting it wrong
>>
>>724328759
Most people don’t derive entrainment from picking one dialogue choice every 30 minutes. My criteria fits just about everything classified as a game except VNs or a music player is a game by your logic. No one gets fun from a music player by pressing the play button but a music player is an entertainment software much like how game consoles are “entertainment systems”
>>
>>724328912
Those aren’t VNs, you literally gave all of them their proper classification.
>>
>>724329528
A music player has a utilitarian purpose, to play music. Video games do not have a utilitarian purpose. You cannot describe what purpose a video game servers other than to be played. What you find entertaining is completely irrelevant to the matter. Your criteria is vague and partially dictated by whether or not you personally enjoy something when that's not relevant to what a word means. What a video game is whatever most people consider to be a video game.

You also completely failed to address my point that kinetic novels don't have interaction. You mention "a choice every 30 minutes" but that's a disingenuous representation of VNs with interaction. Some have that much. Some have much more. I post a picture from one with a lot more than that, it's still a VN and you will not find a single person that knows who Phoenix Wright is that will tell you he's not a video game character.

You've made it clear with this post you really just have an axe to grind and don't like VNs which makes you pretty biased and that combined with how weak your arguments makes say this: You are a faggot, I have made my point, no one agrees with you give it up.

Is a math book a game?

Kanae and Rinne are better tho.
>>
>>724325707
I used to be into more hardcore scat but I mellowed out over the years
>>
>>724329623
If I post them, you will still call them VNs
>>
>>724326665
Wrong VN
>>
>>724329838
I brought up consoles for a reason because I know you would say something stupid like that. A music player is no different to a game console it serves to provide the user entertainment. A MP3 player is an entertainment system, a music app is entertainment software. I don’t consider kinetic novels like Ace Attorney, Zero Escape, or Danganronpa visual novels. I also don’t hate visual novels I actually like them a lot and am the only of my friend group that reads them but I don’t consider them games.
>>
>>724329869
Have you heard of the hit game Sudoku?
>>
>>724331881
Not really, what I consider a VN should have the same level of interactivity as a choose your own adventure book or less.
>>
>>724325619
Are there rules and goals?
Is the field of play defined?
Do you have agency, are you an active participant?
Can you make choices?
Are the consequences of your actions not predetermined?

In hindsight, it's Kanae.

Nemu had a reason to eat shit, whereas Kanae probably didn't NEED to chew on that fat guy's underwear, she just did it to fuck with you.

>>724325707
