Is Daikatana really that bad? I was about to pick it up but heard that it was very poorly received on release.

I played it when it came out but had no ideas about the news. Just a really shitty game.

No (except the starting level). It's just unfinished by default. Development was rushed so half the stuff doesn't work like NPC paths. The fan patches and ports fixed everything and the game is extremely fun.

The starting slog (understandably) filtered alot of game journos, so it got absolutely trashed.

It was mostly mediocre and very buggy, but the reputation is because John Romero was one of the early rock stars of the industry so him making a mediocre game, especially with the infamous magazine ad, was a big deal, with the production process exposing him as a primadonna.

install the fan patches so it isn't so buggy
the first few levels are very boring but it picks up. the guns and enemy types are all fun and the level design is good doom/quake shit
