Dreamcast in 1998 was truly ahead of its time>Support for Sega's own fast/streamlined/documented SDK or Windows CE (to make porting games from the PC easier)>Hitachi SH4 chips>480p with the DC's PowerVR GPU>Rarely-used volumetric per-pixel shadows and volumetric fog features>Order Independent Transparency and is the only system to date that came with OIT at the hardware level>16MB of RAM>Native VGA out support>independent filesharing between memory cards without the console needing to be present>a large (again, for the time) optical disc format that stored up to 1GB of data>Plans to download Dreamcast games directly to the 40GB HDD, a feature that Xbox 360 realized>Had the highest quality video output of the generation, while PS2 was known for having the lowest quality and looking the blurriest overall>Modern game controller is heavily inspired by Dreamcast controller
All that and they didn't think "hey a second analog stick is probably a good idea"
But why did it fail if it had all those gizmos and gadgets?
>>724331832because jews figured out they could squeeze more shekels out of them if they didn't get what they wanted.
>>724331698It's a good thing they didn't add the second stick because it forced the developers to design games with 5th gen gameplay in mind. Console genres like 3D platformers, fighting games or jRPGs don't benefit from the second analog stick. Xbox enabling shitty console FPS is one of the worst things to happen to gaming.
>>724331698Well, dual analog *was* realized around that time with the ps1 dualshock (1997-1998). I doubt many of these businesses felt comfortable putting 2 analog sticks on a controller beforehand. Many games didn't even utilize them, and had odd approaches for strafing movement. Syphon Filter 1 for example, being a 1999 game on ps1 still had shoulder-buttons for strafing so it wasnt a dual-analog stick type game to put it simply. Many games during 5th gen were like this. Towards the end we got the dual-shock re-release versions of *some* games at least. imho Dreamcast jumped the gun too early on 6th gen. Should've just took the risk and copied the twin-stick approach after Sony's DS1 controller. Maybe they didn't want to ripoff of Sony at the time or deal with any legal disputes from them about it. Then the other 6th gen consoles release and they ALL have twin sticks lol.
