So, with the ARG that basically no one knew about being over, is Nine Sols dead forever?
>>724333861As if nine sols was ever alive to begin sith
>>724334310With*Retarded typo of my own fault
>>724334310Eh, I know it was never the biggest metroidvania out there, but it was pretty well liked and of pretty good quality, so it'd be a shame for it to just die out completely.
>>724334583Didn't they release a webcomic with the guy who teaches you the skills? That far from death lmao
>>724334814Yeah, but a webcomic with some backstory to the main material doesn't really qualify as the series being kept alive either, that's just supplementary material.
god i fucking hate ARGs. The turbulent era event was so much more fun
>>724335426>The turbulent era event was so much more funWhat was that? I only got into this game relatively recently, so I'm afraid I'm a bit late to the party on all this.
>>724333861whats nine sols?
>>724336969A metroidvania that came out sometime last year with a heavy focus on parrying. Generally pretty well received, but didn't get as big as something like Hollow Knight.
>>724337243oh.ty
>>724337276>oh.What, expecting something else?
>>724337407no. "oh" as i "oh i didnt know that"
>>724337461Ah, fair enough. The game really didn't seem to advertise itself too much, which I think really hampered it's potential reach.
>>724336801It was done entirely in one place (the community discord). Every participant was sorted into one of the kingdoms on Penglai as a Lord (except Jie). The english speaking players were sorted into either Shang or Yumin. Fortunately, the infamously annoying english speaking discord members were not faggots during it. Many memes OCs and fan arts were made by every kingdom. Shang maximized commerce and refused to leave anything to chance, Yumin was struck with very canonical bad luck but still powered through, Ying became the Boba capital of Penglai, Xia focused on science to make gundams, etc. (all of this being fluff spawned by the statistics and events that the kingdom experienced)Playing was simple: Every day, every Lord had a few Action Points to use in doing their lordly duties around the kingdom and contributing to a collective point pool for the kingdom: military power, commerce, culture or science. Point contribution scaled based on the skill level of the Lord, which could also be trained using daily actions. During each action, a random event might also occur to give an extra bonus or malus. There was also the option to "Visit the harbor," which gave points to or away from a completely random category. Many Chinese players dedicated their entire lordly careers to throwing themselves into the harbor. Additionally, kingdoms had to vote collectively on the missions they would perform to upgrade training or resource point-generating facilities, or sabotage rival kingdoms. Ji was also there to provide some extra gambling in the form of kingdom-wide buffs and debuffs. The event was postponed multiple times due to rate limiting on Discords bots, which was not taken into account, but after a few days of maintenance, the event was completed without any major issues save for some days where actions had to be resubmitted.
>>724338042Huh, neat. So, what was this all for, just a fun little event with some lore implications, or was there anything else to it?Does anything like this still happen in the discord, or just the recent ARG?
>>724338042In the final stages of the event, Jietong would begin his great conquest, and all the kingdoms, rather than competing in a race for bonus-providing accolades based on their advancements over the rest, would be pooling their gathered resources together to push Jietong back in a variety of highly difficult missions that could be completed by any kingdom, from direct military conflict, to economic sanctions and espionage. All of this was happening in tandem with the periodic release of a webcomic set during the Turbulent Era featuring a young Lear and Jietong, which can be read here:https://mojoin.tw/aeobe
>>724338632Ah, I see. This all sounds pretty cool, and like way too much worldbuilding and side content for something that's just a single game. Has RCG made any kind of implications towards any dlc or another game or anything for Nine Sols at any point?
>>724333861I haven't followed the ARG, but I want to say that I think Nine Sols is a masterpiece
>>724337609It's because it was a taiwanese game, which meant china and its bootlickers like Geoff intentionally kneecapped its reach, I'm honestly surprised it's getting a physical release by fangamer at all, since I'd assume they wouldn't want to anger Xi.
>>724338439Nothing like it has happened since it ended in May of this year. Seems like they're not doing any more events while they put all their focus on game development, too. I wouldn't say any lore specifically got dropped that we didn't already know, more that now we have confirmation on which kingdom invented or sponsored what major event in Penglai's history, and when in the timeline, though considering the premise of the event is that each player "Lord" is being sent back in time from an unknown point in the future to ensure Jietong's failure, it's easy to question just how canon any of these gamified lore drops actually are.
>>724339195You're probably right, but I still think it's a little weird how a lot of people (particularly in western countries) vocally oppose China's ambitions towards (re?)taking Taiwan, but also won't actually say or do anything to support Taiwan itself. I know that's all stuff on a bigger scale than an indie game like this, but still, I almost feel like there would've been people supporting the game almost purely for political reasons at that point.
>>724340570>people supporting the game almost purely for political reasonsThere's probably some, but the vast majority of people who "fight" for political causes on the internet do it by posting on social media, since that's free and gets more attention than buying a game. Also, I think the attention that Nine Sols has gotten is completely on par with its mass appeal. It's a difficult that game that's often weird and grotesque, it just doesn't have the cute factor that Hollow Knight has
>>724341085>It's a difficult that game that's often weird and grotesque, it just doesn't have the cute factor that Hollow Knight hasI dunno, I think HK has a pretty decent amount of weird/disturbing stuff in it, and NS has a pretty good amount of cute stuff, namely the character designs, even if those characters are often involved in disturbing things a lot of the time.Basically, I think if HK could get away with the area of the game basically made entirely out of child corpses, I don't think anything NS did was particularly out there by comparison.
>>724341482I think that everything about HK is more instantly appealing to the average person than NS. HK has rounded character designs with soft outlines, cute noises that characters make, very simple controls and pleasing color palette. NS has a somewhat strange color palette, jankier animations, angry looking main character, ugly villagers, instantly wordy dialogue and more complex controls since the start. I'd say even the East Asian aesthetics and music are a bit niche outside that region. I love the game, but I don't see much mass appeal in it
>>724342050Honestly, I feel like HK's character designs should be *less* appealing to most people over NS's designs. HK primarily features bugs with some pretty sharp or otherwise unnerving designs, while NS has a lot of cute furry animal designs. Don't take this as me having any problem with HK, I'm just saying in terms of creepy/cute stuff, I feel like both games have their fair share of each in a lot of places. If nothing else, I feel like certain designs from NS should've helped earn the game a bit more notoriety, at least from people who fall for furbait.
