I used to work at a reptile shop that sold rats as snake food. I was shown how to painlessly euthanise rats. There are three standard ways. One is injection from a veteranian. It's prohibitively expenses for breed to do. If you've got like 100 rats vet bills would stack up to much more than you bring in reveuaSo no breeders are taking rats to vets. But if a rat is in pain it becomes time to euthanise. There's two standard ways. Well three but the third is horrific and some breeder do it to save time.The most humane way to euthanise them is to use a gas chamber and pump in co2 at a low concentration. The rats will pass out unconscious and then the concentration of co2 is raised to suffocate them.The second is picking them up by hand and twisting their head 360 degrees. Their head will separate spine and they'll be dead instantlyThe third is some breeders do this and it might be illegal. They put them alive in a freezer and they'll eventually be frozen solid. It saves them effort since most euthanised rats will be frozen for snake food.

If its a serious infestation you probably want to call in a professional. Otherwise just set plenty of traps, close up wherever they're getting in from, and make sure you're not leaving out anything that could be food (good luck they'll eat anything). If you live in a free-standing house you can get shit to spread around that will chase off vermin.
