I didn't do much with PC in gen 7 since my PC was dogshit and they were still in the WOW phase I think, but PC was also getting games like Crysis one (which ended up being a meme for how ridiculously good it looks and how it would never be able to run on the current gen consoles). For me, having the Wii for the experimental stuff and playing games with the motion controls (I had fun) and the 360 for the "real" games was fantastic for the first few years. Then Microsoft and Sony tried to do their own motion controlled thing which didn't work.

Also by tonal shift I mean how Nintendo started to actually feel like they were for kids. Biggest example is Mario Kart 64 -> Mario Kart Double Dash.I could go for a huge wall of text here, but I'm not going to type all of that out. Just in my experience, Gamecube was nowhere near the "mature" one unless you were probably in Elementary School and looked at Shadow with a gun as mature and hip. Of course Gamecube HAD games like RE4, Killer 7, and such, but they were 100% overshadowed by the other, more "friendly" games.
