>>724366742>>724366561Like most heroic spirits become servants through the sheer power of their legend alone. They die and the end up in the Throne of Heroes. Only Counter Guardians sign a contract with the planet in exchange for power or some sort of miracle.
>>724365452Official of fan TL?
>>724366742Did you read the image?>... Yeah. The Servant system uses heroic spirits, guardian spirits. This clearly states that guardians (occasionally called counter-guardians) are heroic spirits. What the image is pointing out is that according to the original F/SN, most heroic spirits either gained the power to become a hero or something else in exchange for becoming a heroic spirit/guardian after they die. The scene in the image is part of the revelation that Saber is actually still alive and not yet a heroic spirit. This is the real reason she cannot dematerialize into spirit form like other servants (she lied about Shirou not having enough mana to allow her to do this) and this is also why Archer says in the HF route that she is not a guardian. The only other example of a servant that was not a heroic spirit/guardian is Assassin and that is because he was a familiar based on a myth that was summoned using the servant system (an advanced familiar system designed by the Makiri clan).
What did Nasu mean by this?
I'd say VN's with actual choices and branching paths are as much video games as your average Telltale game was.Now the kinetic VN's with no choices that you just plop in and read....thats just a flat out book with pictures desu.

>>724366561>>724367446It feels like there's something getting lost in translation there, with imprecise language, or in the wider context of the scene.Saber and Archer both made a contract with The World to become Heroic Spirits, but their circumstances are exceptional even within F/SN. It's not at all a typical thing and I can't think of any other characters who did this, Heroic Spirits earn their status by merit (as Saber would have) or notoriety. Nasu loves setting up "rules" to break them but I wouldn't even consider this a "rule."My best justification is that Nasu might have been imagining that there ought to be many more "Nameless Heroic Spirits" like Archer, but this idea never really went anywhere because the whole premise and appeal of the series is summoning actual known heroes and mythological/historical figures to battle.>The only other example of a servant that was not a heroic spirit/guardian is Assassin and that is because he was a familiar based on a myth that was summoned using the servant systemTrue Assassin is also somewhat an example, since "Hassan-i-Sabbah" is a composite identity, and Medusa is something more like a god and a monster than a human. The concept of a "Heroic Spirit" was very nebulous from the start.
>>724371448Yeah, I also remembered notoriety being the main factor in who becomes a heroic spirit and who doesn't. That's why people who never existed can become heroic spirits as well, like Kojiro who is explicitly stated to be an amalgamation of three completely separate people.

Nasu didn't expect Fate to blow up the way it did and its popularity led to TM putting their other projects on hold in order to capitalize on the cash cow they had stumbled upon. >Nasu loves setting up "rules" to break them but I wouldn't even consider this a "rule."Also he just likes to hype up certain characters and scenes by breaking rules that he either established earlier in the work, during the cool moment, or afterward to make the moment seem cooler in retrospect

>>724361237Kinetic Novels are not videogames. There is actually no gameplay involved, all that happens is text advances and you read it. Higurashi is not a video game, then.A visual novel like Rose Guns Days I would call an exception to this. It's extremely rudimentary gameplay, literally just clicking hitsplats, but it's there, and it never breaks immersion.A visual novel like Tokyo Necro I would say is also not a video game. There are exactly two branching path choices to pick, and those two choices are your only gameplay. Otherwise, it's literally just a kinetic novel, although one with a lot of flashy effects (and KINO)A visual novel like Fate/Stay Night I would say moves in the video game direction. Complex choices which could lead to bad or dead ends as a failstate, clearly narrative driven and no tactile feedback, but there is actually interaction with the game happening.A dating sim like Tokimeki Memorial is absolutely a video game, but this doesn't lean heavily enough into the narrative direction to be called a visual novel either. It is, however, the single most stressful experience I have ever had playing a game that was fully functioning as intended, definitely the most brutally stressful game I've played. And then there are visual novels like Baldr Sky. Baldr Sky is objectively a video game, and the combat segments feel fun as fuck and there's a lot of customization you could do with it.
>>724376240Wanna know some deep Fate lore? Saber's default outfit is originally from Kirei. It was gifted to Rin by Kirei earlier on but she never wore it because she never liked him that much. Wanna know some deep Fate lore? Shirou's magic isn't actually projection, it's a reality marble which imposes his inner world onto our reality. His inner world just so happens to be SWORDS and he can pull these SWORDS out of his inner world in a way that appears similar to projection to the untrained eye. SWORDS

>>724377261its the first thing rin says when saber turns up. in the animes too
Fate/Zero contradicts how the 4th grail war was described in many ways, but one that I recently thought about was Kiritsugu's magic. If Rin was able to figure out that Shirou was actually using a reality marble instead of projection after seeing him do it, then how come Kiritsugu never realized Shirou was using a reality marble? If Kiritsugu had his own reality marble, then he should have known how they worked better than Rin who had only heard about them. Yet, he believed that Shirou was merely using projection and told him that it was a useless magic. It only makes sense if Kiritsugu was merely a competent magus as he was described in Fate/Stay Night as that makes it more plausible that he could have missed something that a genius from the Tohsaka clan was able to understand.
>>724377375It doesn't show up in the MAL synopsis though.
>>724377417Kiritsugu also explicitly refers to himself as a sorcerer instead of just a magus. Who fucking knows what his original magic was.

I don't know, but I like Rin.
I was reading up on how Takeuchi's art improved from Tsukihime to Fate, and it kind of makes sense except for the part where they say the sprites in Kagetsu Tohya and Plus-Disc have improved shading. The story goes that Takeuchi did the more detailed promotional art sprites first so he had more time to work on the shading which is why they look that way, but he had to rush the sprites for Tsukihime in 4 months while working multiple jobs to fund the project since Nasu was bumming off of him at the time. This is why the final version of Tsukihime's sprites have less shading and some of the CGs can look pretty rough and have garish coloring. Then after they released Tsukihime, they had enough money to hire more employees which led to Takeuchi having 2 new assistants who did the coloring and shading for him. This makes sense for why Melty Blood's and Fate/Stay Night's art looks so much better. But the sprites in Kagetsu Tohya and Plus-Disc have the same level of shading and the same style of coloring as the OG Tsukihime despite these art assistants helping with those too. So I was wondering if there was an earlier version of Tsukihime with worse looking sprites and if that is why they claim the KT+D sprites are such a big difference. Does anyone know? I know that there was an earlier demo version of Tsukihime that they sold to raise money during the development, but I don't think that is what is being referenced
>>724379597The version I heard was that Koyama got on board sometime during the development of Kagetsu Tohya and that's why the CGs and the shading looks so much better there and also in later games than they do in Turkeyhandle.
>>724379730But the shading looks about the same. Unless there is a version of Tsukihime that looks worse than the one I've always seen on YT which is the same as the one I originally played when I discovered Tsukihime in middle school which still looks the same as the version I have today which I got off of a Tsukihime fan website. The only difference I can tell is that KT+D has more sprites than vanilla Tsukihime, which makes sense as there are more scenes, but the new sprites all have the same style of shading and coloring as the original sprites (which also makes sense if they were made to blend in with the old ones in order to avoid having to make new sprites for the old poses). Also after looking at the sprite sheets, I see that Akiha seems to have gotten quite a bit of favoritism
>>724377417kerry never tried to actually teach shirou he clearly didn't want him to be a mage.>surely this incredibly painful regime will make him stop
>>724380176I was thinking of the shading in the CGs rather than the sprites themselves, there's a marked improvement to them in KT.The buzzed Akiha with the shot glass has to be the best sprite Takeuchi ever did.
>>724380581No. He never tried to force Shirou to be a mage, but Shirou kept insisting upon it so Kiritsugu did try to teach him. Shirou himself said that Kiritsugu tried to teach him the basics of magecraft, but the only things he could understand and somewhat effectively do was reinforcement and "projection" (though clearly Shirou understood other basic forms of magecraft as he was able to enhance his eyesight and sense mana/bound fields).

>>724371448Nasu's "rules" never were a thing. Assumptions of magi, normal humans, and other spooks, their knowledge, their zeitgeists and their spiritual force are solely theirs, just like IRL ones are. What you really missed is a basic logical conclusion about fame.Acquisition of HS status by "merit" is fundamentally nonsense because any merit requires an entity to recognize it, the Throne existing at all implies construction, and merit iself must be judged. Fame, respect, all these are fluctuating variables that require sapience to assess, and what one being can assess as important is meaningless to another. As such the concept is anything but nebulous, because the Hero and the Hero of Justice is and are the Archetype of Heroism, and The Throne, naturally, is an eldritch abomination of highest sort. The Throne heroes may be preserved souls, but the Throne itself has no practical limitations on what it can make, incarnate, instigate or summon, because it exists outside space and time, and covers all instances of heroism. The only limitations might be that one line from Extella about the Dimension and energy limits, but even that's a stretch.Hence why you can create any mutations of the [Servant] concept. Whether or not they are under the Throne's purview doesn't matter because the summoning system allows materialization of any spirit, while the Throne covers too many instances of heroism.Saber is only exceptional in that she has connections to forces that allow her to retain her autonomy. Had her mythos lacked the faerie escape card, she'd be in the Throne.[Shirou Emiya] however is as exceptional as Gil and the Throne itself, simply because he is equally unnatural.
