"Mainstream" in the gaming sphere has changed drastically since 1997. A mainstream game would still have been considered nerdy to most normies at the time. As for the future of Fallout? Bethesda wants it to be bootleg Star Wars at this point, so who even gives a fuck now? They just started working on ES6, so we're not getting a new Fallout for a long time. It's the fault of Bethesda's ego, and the proof lies with Microsoft. If not for Skyrim's clout, they would've shared Bethesda's IPs to smaller studios years ago.
