The original King book isn't bad but the movie elevates the material for most people. Usually it's hard to take something already good, popular and beloved and make something better. Although it's also much easier when the source material is just trash.The biggest issue video games face both being adapted and adapting other mediums is that they tend to be paced very differently. Most video games if they were movies or books would have an excess of action scenes because that's where the player interacts with most games. It works for a game because games put the player in the medium where they aren't going to feel it's tedious to watch a guy shoot from cover, reload, shoot from cover, reload. In a book or movie that's boring. In a game you are shooting the gun, afraid of dying and that helps put you in the moment in a way that makes the repetition not boring. You have a similar issue in reverse when trying to make things into games. Most source material lack enough scenes that could function as interaction points. You either have to add action scenes or make that interaction happen else where but if you move the interaction to things like dialogue then you basically get into having to write fanfiction what-if scenarios. Maybe that works for some stories but not a lot. Despite being a story telling medium, games are just too different most of the time to directly things exactly. The Batman Arkham games are a good example of how the best way to adapt a story to a game is usually to write an original story that captures the experience of the source material. The Mad Max game is another similar example.
