What's the biggest you can get in a level of OUAKatamari where you start on the ground as normal? (Space-only playable cutscenes need not apply)

How did it turn out?
I was worried about
- Some terrible gimmick like the mobile game
- 50% Greatest Hits (rehash levels like PS3 katamari)
- PC compatibility issues
- somehow horrible resolution to use the same game on Switch
>>
>>724411664
Pretty well, I think. Someone made a decent point about getting stuck being a more common thing here compared to the first two, and the physics feeling slightly odd, but neither of these is so egregious as to ruin the game. The only real gimmick of the game are the power-ups, like the magnet or the radar or whatever, and they're really just there to make rolling a more fluid experience. As far I know, this game is entirely new stages, but I'm not done yet. There are literally no issues on PC or with the resolution.

It's a good game but the physics are a lot worse than the first two games. I've gotten stuck multiple times under objects, between objects etc. One level, a castle, is particuarly egregious because there's a long outdoors balcony that's very easy to gain too much size and become stuck on the railing. The worst part is that there's no mechanic in place to reduce your size like in the original games so you're either waiting out the timer or restarting the level when it happens.

>is it really to mimic the physics of a 20 year old ps2 game?

PS2 couldn't even do industry standard floating point, it used its own format. Plus it had its own vector co-processors running parallel.
So yeah, porting something from PS2 ain't that simple. On that note the first Katamari game also had you problems where you fell through the ground and out of the stage, except if it happened the King brought you back and told you it was a Royal Teleport.

But yeah what's mind blowing with this game is that a) they could've just used copied the entire physics from We Love Katamari since the game is based off of that engine, or b) use Beautiful Katamari as the base since it's a far more powerful engine that doesn't even require mid level loading, and the 360 is a bit easier to port from than the PS2.
Yet somehow they failed at both.

Sad to hear that the new one wasn't able to maintain the fluidness.

Good post. Also, that's what I was worried about. Modern day companies can't into computers like they used to. Wish they'd license out the IPs to independent studios and force them to perform a sort of "proof of concept" to earn the IP. Same goes with game freak.

No, they definitely didn't remove it. I saw someone post a clip of it happening because they added a new gag for this game. The King says something like

>>
>>724421331
>Not many people remember the physics difficulties of the first Katamari on PS2. We Katamari truly fixed a lot of problems.

The first game didn't have difficulties, it gave you much more freedom in fact, you just had to work for it harder. Like when you go near a wall and try to float up, you can get as high as you want at any point. The level design also took advantage of this. One of the levels even had a present hidden on the top of a gigantic smokestack, you had to float up on it for a solid half minute straight to get it.
Plus the mission times were a lot more generous, so you could spend more time exploring. The street level had hidden canals you could go into while still small. The rare items were actually rare, in that they were often hidden and you had to explore to find them.
Yeah you could get stuck but the game had a mechanic to free you (the ball started shaking and everything you rolled up fell out until you got small enough).

We Love Katamari changed the physics so you could easily roll over anything you want to, with no effort. But you couldn't float as high up, and you had less hidden areas. The games had shorter timers and prioritised rolling fast and precise for a high score. I disliked that a lot because it's much more rush based and less about dicking around in a world that looks like a comfy dream.

BTW, in this game, you can only foot maybe 3 times as your height and then you fall off the wall. You can only go higher on special objects, like a ladder or a rope. Which is also why you can get stuck sometimes, there's no way to float up walls far enough.

>>724422075
Royal Warp only happens you if you clipped through and fell out of the level, not if you just got stuck.

>Wish they'd license out the IPs to independent studios and force them to perform a sort of "proof of concept" to earn the IP.

That's what got us Bubsy 4D (the IP owner specifically fished for indie studios to make a proof of concept that's more than just yet-another-platform-game) and also Streets of Rage 4 (the studio had previously made a beat-em-up and were giant SOR2 fans).

As Fast as Possible 5 is destroying me
>>
>>724423232
That's actually the easiest level by far, you have so many magnets to use. Use a magnet in an area you've grown out of but haven't picked up everything, like the city at the beginning, you can use the magnet to just pull in everything and double in size.
Or there's one where you can go from the Jurassic Island -> Ice Age Island -> Monorail island -> Desert island in a few dashes, you do that and you can go from like 200M to 1000M in a few dashes. There's a magnet at the ice age island and if you go left on the desert there are a bunch of Oni Rocks with another magnet.

only thing you have to pay attention to is to memorize at what sizes the game starts loading, so you won't have your magnet time cut in half by it.

I want a Katamari like survival horror, where there's no cartoon physics beyond the ball acting like a magnet, so you'd see a trail of destruction in its wake. Your goal would be to survive as long as possible, you could pick up objects like weapons or vehicles to temporarily deter the katamari or run away to a new area fast.

Why don't all power-ups prevent loading like the stopwatch? Why does everything despawn before the loading screen even appears preventing you from picking shit up that you're literally on top of? Why does the camera take forever to sweep back to you once the loading is done? Why do power-up nodes remain after a load on some levels, and why isn't that the default behaviour? Why is the shitty radar a power-up instead of a cosmetic or permanent unlock from the King token gacha?

>Why don't all power-ups prevent loading like the stopwatch?
I guess because the stopwatch freezes the world so all the cutscenes would be broken.

>Why does everything despawn before the loading screen even appears preventing you from picking shit up that you're literally on top of?
It used to do the motion blur effect first, which is used to hide objects despawning when you change sizes. But they added shitty cutscenes which would get broken by the motion blur. They fucked it up.

>Why does the camera take forever to sweep back to you once the loading is done?
The camera sweeping back is supposed to show you where you have to go, except nobody picked up on the fact that you are no longer frozen and have to move around blindly (and have your powerups losing time).

>Why do power-up nodes remain after a load on some levels, and why isn't that the default behaviour?
I guess they are also "too small" and get despawned, which fucking sucks and makes them even more limited and strategical to use.

>Why is the shitty radar a power-up instead of a cosmetic or permanent unlock from the King token gacha?
It's not shit because it allows you to locate all crowns, cousins, and presents. But I think it should've been replaced with magnets on any level where you unlocked everything, since they are no longer useful.

Or have all the powerups be unlockable and freely useable with your tokens. Like you have each powerup take a certain amount of tokens, 5 for radar, 10 for speedup, 15 for stopwatch, 20 for magnet, and so on. so once you unlock everything, you have enough tokens that you can start a level with 8 magnets or so.
No, that wouldn't work, some levels are built around using the powerups strategically (Make A Star Again, or As Fast As Possible 4/5).
Maybe have the tokens upgrade the powerups so they last longer or have wider range. And have a button to turn them off too.

btw, regarding the powerups, the game was supposed to have more powerups and even upgrades. Sickle was supposed to allow you to climb any wall. Everything else was meant to have SP versions, presumably lasting longer or having a stronger effect (faster movement, larger magnet radius, etc).

>>
>>724433696
If you roll up the radar there is no way to get rid of it other than activating it, and it lasts forever. I would rather find things for myself, so I'd rather it be entirely optional. If there was a way to grind tokens endlessly, maybe using them for power-ups would make sense, but I think you should just equip whatever power you want, then build up some sort of roll meter that you can choose when to use.

Cowbear is less annoying than before. I could get everything plus all the exclusive objects in ~2 hours. And most stuff is static, you don't have random crap running into you, except for a flying cow and the Cow General, Bear Shogun, and the giant Cowbear chasing them both around the level.

ALAP4/5 and AFAP4/5 are both great levels, especially AFAP4/5 which gives you enough magnets to go from 200m to 1km in ten seconds. Really fun.

However I don't think you unlock anything, and the game is even missing the "heavenly" effect on ALAP5 where you roll up everything and the game ascends (second game) or has cherubs circling you (first game). I don't know why they took that out.

Nowhere near as bad as in We Love Katamari where you'd have something completely fucking random thing flying/charging into you. In fact you have tons of free space to move around, it's about the only level where collision doesn't screw you up either.

And none of the enemies run away from you either, so getting the largest items isn't just 8 minutes of rolling to get a random chance at dashing into the cowbear. You can just stand in its path and win.

>I have yet to get good magnets in AxAP 4/5
Wait with the magnets until you get large enough. If your rolling starts becoming stuttered, wait, you are about to get a scene transition which may be a loading screen.
For AFAP4, use the magnets once in the playground (3M barrier, turn left through the large red gate, the four girl statues are there), then once in the sub-city past the 3M area where you have animals circled around with fences and square bushes. If you are large enough to pick up the bushes you can rack up tons of size there. You could also go into the rice terrace area which has bushes that's also worth a lot of size.

AFAP5 has like 7 magnets and if you save one for after the 200M transition, you can go ice age area -> monorail city -> desert oasis or american mountains and rack up hundreds of meters. desert oasis can boost you from 300m to 450m alone. there's a last magnet in the oni rocks, grab that, then find the island with the stacked spider symbols, those give you a ton of size, then just... roll around with the magnet and as long as you are not stuck you should rocket up to 1km instantly.

If a level has multiple cousins, you have to unlock them one at a time. The second cousin won't show up until you completed the level with the first one rolled up, and so on. It fucking sucks but that's how it is; you'll want multiple playthroughs for the challenges anyway.

No, you can roll all cousins the first time, but they spawn in order, when you roll the first one the second shows up.
>>
For whoever has problems with the Roses level, keep in mind that a lot of extra roses will spawn halfway through the level. So make sure you do NOT use the magnets until they spawned. From what I've noticed, the ones you need to get are:
- rose singing lady in front of the atrium, you see it in a cutscene
- near the market and the fountain, two girls with rose laurels can be picked up for ~500 roses each
- the area with the yellow and blue roses will spawn angel cousins who have 4 laurels each but WILL FLY AWAY. the center pool also spawns extra roses, and the road down the middle will have extra cousins too.
- the theatron where a wedding takes place (lots of people forming a maze) has the bride to pick up
- on the right exit of the theatron, the small garden will have angel katamaris hoarding laurels, they don't fly away

and nearly all fences have roses to knock off. So use your magnets strategically. Near the end, you can go from back of the market (roses on the fences), by the fountain (singing girls), then up the ramp to the right and into the Zeus temple to get several thousand roses in one magnet.

>>724449564
Didn't work for me, the second only spawned once I unlocked the first one. ie. get the first, finish the level, then on 2nd playthrough the 2nd one will also show up even if I no longer roll up the first. Same for third cousin, will only spawn once you finished the level once with the 2nd cousin rolled.
That's how it was on We Love Katamari too.

DOUN!

Okay, I'm going to ask it. What is the appeal of these games? I get the charming visuals and music, but is the gameplay really just rolling things up to get bigger so you can roll up bigger things? Does that not get old after one level? I don't understand it.

does a first person shooter get old because the gameplay is just shooting people and running around? it's a skill based game and a lot of the levels are not just getting bigger, you have rules to follow to succeed or you have to roll faster rather than larger
>>

1 it's hella charming.
2 it's an arcade-like time attack title where you have to get maximum score in limited time; or get a given score in the fastest time, depending on level.
3 beating your own scores is only so much fun, but the game gives you extras if you get very very high scores or fast times. The As Fast and As Big as Possible levels will unlock you an extra comet each, if you beat them under a hidden par time.
4 levels have secret items to unlock customizations. presents, cousins, crowns, etc.
5 the game tracks how many different items you rolled up; you also get bonuses if you roll up everything (including all cousins)

so it's a charming, relaxing arcade-style game, where you can use the high scores and unlock gimmicks to find an excuse to master every level. Once you've maxed that out, you can still go back to the final level and just play it for fun, since there's a certain charm to making your katamari snowball from ant sized to continent sized, and have all the people in the buildings, ships, planes, islands etc SCREAM as you roll them over.

good, now you only need to get the Cow General, the Bear Shogun, the Cow Oni, the Bear foot soldier, the Cow foot soldier, the bear banner, and the cow banner, and the Resting Bear (there's one on the beach).

The other unique cows/bears can be found on the other levels for sure.

I'm sure you can get quite high, the first two levels have a rooftop you can go up to from a ladder. The third level just has a sub-basement. I think on my first playthrough I actually managed to roll up the strawberry cows in the basement so you can most likely get very very large.

So some anon asked about the translation, and so I did a quick playthrough of We Love Katamari in jp.

It turns out the guy who called it a "bobobobobo" style translation was close enough. Goes for vibe more than line by line. King is pretty straightforward. Sometimes they replace one wordplay with another, sometimes they just completely fucking give up, like the title. King still goes off on weird as fuck tangents that are weird as fuck in japanese.. He's also royal as all hell.

One thing that actually is consistently off for no apparent reason at all though is the petitioners. They consistently translate the petitioners as saying how much they love the king, and leave out the part where they talk about the katamari theme, like "I'm hungry too". Or. "maybe you should get some rest your highness", and just have it be "we love you king!" There's plenty of that anyways as well.

The item guide is also pretty closely translated as well, with the king giving his opinions on everything you can roll up.

This game is too intensive on the analog sticks, I feel like you need a genuine PS2 controller to play this to avoid wearing down the cheap potentiometers found in every current first-party controller.

The game looks fine as it is, we don't need a realistic t-rex like in the mv. Besides, the t-rex in the mv is 2D anyway.

No I don't mean the graphics, more on the menus and stuff. Feels very... barebones. Say for example the music player, everything is static aside from the play button. And there's no transition between screens sometimes.

Also why am I limited to just 20 favorite songs
>>
>>724463868
Ahh I see what you mean. Yeah, definitely can kinda feel the lower budget in everything including some parts of the UI.
>>
>>724463868
I honestly think that's just part of the aesthetic they were going for, I can't imagine a bit more flourish in the menus was out of budget, it can't possibly be that expensive or time consuming.
