funny thing is, they did, for a good while, they integrated the store right into twitch, you could buy ubislop games and even get benefits, if you bought the division 2 and r6 siege when they came out you got extra shit in both for buying through twitch.
They just... Gave up on the idea for some reason (some reason being that they didn't want to reduce their cut to pay the streamers)
It was a funny experiment because it actually worked pretty well, streamers are great at incentivizing people to buy right away, this is why devs have the streams they loop 24/7 on steam pages for tons of games, people get a live view and might get that push they need to buy it.
But their GREED fucking cockblocked them.

It was honestly a pretty nice little feature for the short while it was available. I'm struggling to remember other games besides the then-new ubisoft games, and I think payday 2 was selling there too.
It WAS a good idea but again, greed stopped it.
Ubisoft's IR reports said that as pilots they were given a rate of 80% of sales (as opposed to steam's standard 25 for larger publishers leaving them 75), but amazon was disappointed in the amount of sales, so instead of letting it run they shut it down after less than a year.

Steam wins due to three reasons:
1. First one to get the online game store concept right

3. Steam is still functional.

Interestingly enough, Epic has the right idea with the free games and they're basically fighting a war of attrition against Valve.
By giving the games for free they're allowing a new generation of consumers to build their libraries; they don't have any attachment to Steam because they never bought games there.

So in 10 years only old people will still have Steam libraries while the rest of people will have their EGS libraries, slowly driving Valve out of business.

The problem is steam's competitors either don't have the resources to compete against Valve or else they don't have the patience. Valve didn't become the juggernaut that it is now in 1 or 2 years, it took them a long time to gradually build up trust and gradually improve their storefront. When Steam first came out people were dragging it constantly, it was shitty and lacked features and everybody constantly harangued Valve over it. But they kept on improving it and adding more and more features, until eventually it had so much to offer even people who'd held out for years eventually came to the table (I was one of these). Mostly it was the utter shittiness of the PC ecosystem at the time in the late 00s that made me make a Steam account, finally. Valve were the only ones who seemingly had any intention of investing into the PC platform, it didn't seem like a bad bet to buy from them.

By contrast, look at their competitors. GoG are admirable for committing to no DRM and making games cheap and accessible, and I've bought a lot of games from them as well, but they simply do not have the resources to really compete against Valve's suite of advanced features. And in fact, GoG's commitment to zero DRM puts them at a disadvantage in this case. It makes them very consumer-friendly, but "no DRM" doesn't attract publishers and developers to your storefront.

Epic's failures are well documented and I don't think I have to go into detail here, but the biggest problem is Sweeny's impatience. He had all the money to take it very slow and build trust with consumers, but he wanted to make his store an instant competitor to Steam. He made a lot of dick moves that pissed people off, and clearly didn't give a shit about customers. He had such an entitled attitude about it that almost regardless of what he was offering people spat in his face for his shitty greedy mindset.

desu Emiru probably didn't care that much but she has to act like she does because it'd be really weird not to. She's confessed that she's easy to sleep with. She knows she's farming this "parasocial girlfriend relationship" meta with some of her fans so it was only a matter of time before this happened since she's stringing along these incredibly lonely and stunted virgin men.

Personally, I think this is a good thing. If women had less security they would think twice about farming simps for money. Imagine it was legal to rape onlyfans whores because you're not raping you're just stealing services. They'd stop real quick.

A public company can never compete with Valve because Valve has no financial incentive to ever fuck over their customers over at any point. Public companies have a constant incentive to fuck over their customers and even if the powers that be happen to be benevolent, someone gets laid off someone else gets hired and the customers are back on the block again
>>

Meanwhile they pay some marketing retard 6 figures to cRaCk tEh CoDe of how Steam dominates the market, when Newell already told the whole industry exactly how it's done in 2008 (just offer features and value that are an improvement on the pirate copy).

Anyone who thinks business creates a meritocracy or who believes in the invisible hand of the market has no clue how retarded even the most successful companies are.
>>
>>724421920
>They think just offering free games is enough
Because it is.
The only reason Steam wins is due to people already having a big investment there in the form of the games they've been buying for the past 20 years. Everything else is flavor, irrelevant flavor.

There will be a point where all the newcomers to PC gaming will have EGS accounts with hundreds of games. Why would they go to Steam?

Impossible for a publicly traded company that must constantly enshitify their service chasing quarterly profits. Valve has an insurmountable advantage, and that advantage is the ability to simply do nothing.

This post is the most trvest of trve posts I have ever seen. Publicly traded companies are forced to make a profit at metaphorical gunpoint. If they make a decision that causes a loss, people get replaced. If they intentionally cause a loss, they get sued. The only way to go private again is to have an enormous amount of wealth in order to buy out the company again.

The short of it is:

Growth stunted and shrinking from terrible management for years.
California level no fun allowed so only very old partners can act like human beings, driving most of the new blood and small people to Kick which seems to be doing a lot better than when MS and Facebook kidnapped some ecelebs.
Constant ad streaks embedded into the stream itself without warning or even a peek into what you're missing in the stream on first visit and then every 30 minutes, a total bitch to bypass so most people just dropped it, leaving only the whales and the savvy.
Opened up not-videogames with bathtubs and nigger shit.
Opened up not-videogames again with terrorists doing politics.
Vtubers, which used to be largely a jap streamer thing, swooped into the vacuum and plague a lot of categories.
eSports, which were a lot of the blood of the site, are basically dead.

https://gamerant.com/epic-games-store-free-games-list/
Even if you arrived a couple years late to the party, if you kept redeeming the free games by this point you have a library bigger than 90% of Steam libraries.

Little Timmy, a newcomer to the PC gaming ecosystem, already built a massive library. He has no reason to buy the newest game on Steam because he already has his games on Epic.
>>
>>724413136
Twitch people watch others play games they don't buy them themselves
Look at the the Nintendo Switch 2, all the haters are on twitch but it still sold the most of any console ever. The twitch userbase only care about gossip and drama, videogames are just an excuse to watch their favourite ecelebs socialize
>>
>>724422931

>>
>>724422725
You forgot that they not only MUST make profit, but also make MORE proffit than the last period
What public companies chase is not profit, it is growth
If there is no growth people get replaced, stocks get sold, the investment dries

Steam stays afloat by doin nothing because they do not have to chase this model
>>
>>724422853
I wonder why more platforms don't do this, just posting basic details like how many users are playing a game or how many are even signed in
a lot of big companies like to boast about sales numbers or "players" but Steam's the only one that really gives you a good look at how many actually give a fuck
>>
>>724422931
Epic doesn't have the social features of Steam though. Even if you have a bunch of literal who indie games from giveaways, there's no community you're invested in.

>>724422291
>Unreal Engine prints money
Epic only gets cash if the game performs most of the time, or at least I think they usually have a percentage based revenue model for anything but the largest games. Epic also has a few hundred devs working on the engine back at HQ, which means their operating costs are high.

>WoW
WoW can continue to exist because its dev costs get lower and lower as the content and expansions get increasingly thin. Don't forget that Blizzard has been having their balls squeezed for half a decade at least because they were too expensive. It's what's happening right now to MS' gaming division.
>>

They have the right idea, but just like their store, the execution is the problem. 90% of games are shovelware garbage, 10% are kinda decent games that people might play at some point. None of these will make any young PC gamer pick EGS over Steam. Shareholders need to come to terms with the fact that at this point Steam is untouchable and that there is nothing they can do to stop them. They are PC gaming. No sane person would willingly choose to use an inferior launcher with less games than the premier store that almost everyone uses. Public companies are incapable of being better than a private company by nature. Games are more entertainment than business, and you can't business manage entertainment.

The difference between Steam and EGS was that Steam was founded on the release of Half Life 2, one of the all-time PC games of the time and basically forced people to use Steam for the DRM. Valve already had loyal fans back then but they cultivated them well by genuinely believing in the entertainment aspect. After all, Gaben was one of the original Windows programmers who worked out DirectX and ported Doom as Window's first proper killer app. All that Tim did was try to follow in Id's shoes with Unreal while Gaben and co focused on actually understanding games as the future of entertainment. EGS was based out of Fortnite, a free game that was a ripoff of previous, uglier battle royale games. No shit nobody is gonna get attached to owning Fortnite if its F2P unlike HL2, CS, TF2 and Portal at the time.

Successfully has become the biggest online store.
Successfully has becomes the world biggest cloud networking provider.
It’s kind of like with Google, you just need 1 really successful product to justify 99 failures

holy FUCK I'm mad now

Instead of pursuing video games, they should've copied Steam and focused on movies and music, also books and audio-books.
>a social network
>a library
>a trophy case
>a store

Sounds more like hes the guy responsible for getting viewbots off twitch after that one big incident this year. That actually tanked a chunk of viewership off twitch which is probably why they laid him off

>Reminder that Amazon was competing with Steam and nobody even knew. They bought Twitch to try to draw customers away from steam. Let that sink in for a minute.
They also completely miss the reason people still use steam. Valve hasn't fucked anyone over like amazon has, valve makes all their money off of steam meaning valve up and abandoning steam anytime soon is not going to happen whereas amazon and google are famous for just dropping things people depend on simply because they randomly find it not making enough money.
There will never be a world where anyone checks in to the epic game store, amazon game hut, or google game palooza because those companies are fucking garbage and lead by retards.

>Steam people are actual cultists. Epic Games Store literally gives out a free game every week and they still refuse to use it, because using Steam is more important to them than playing games
I ain't supporting tim weenie and his fortshite, not now not ever.
