Nah, it's just a bunch of ideas that in theory are great but in practice ended up being a disaster because they didn't tested it enough.
It's like the thalidomide of game engines.

The whole engine hinges on the idea that TAA works, no one will try to do anything too heavy with blueprints, people will be able to understand the overdesigned C++ interface and that nanite can be good.

Crysis at its time was phenomenal though?
It had physics based foliage that could be pushed against by the character model, it had wave simulation, underwater simulation, it had physics based destruction of the sheet metal houses.
It had plenty of open areas as well as linear sections, and was fairly open to modding.

Also on top of that, at its time, it was also complained about with optimization issues because it didn't take advantage of CPU cores and iirc GPU shaders weren't utilized in the 'best' way causing crashes often.
Comparing that, a game from 2007, UE5 has nice looking rocks and clouds, but it's all artificial. It's stagnant. IT has no life to it.

And if you play on consoles then get ready for 720p upscaled to 4k, blurriness and shit performance. I think Silent Hill F it's like the only UE5 game on consoles that is not complete shit. Ninga Gaiden 4's engine is more outdated and less advanced than UE5 but the game still looks and runs so much better than any other UE5 game is not even funny. It's like a night and day difference. UE5 need a lot of work and is actually ruining games.

If you're not talking about millions of triangles, it is not much of a problem.
Even a Geforce MX 440 could run a million of gouraud shaded triangles at 30 FPS, ands car in gran turismo 5 have 500.000 triangles.
However, GPUs fucking hate drawing triangles that are smaller than 2x2 pixels, it's brutally slow to do "half pixels".
The whole idea of nanite is to create triangles that is never smaller than 2x2 pixels "automatically".
But it is not a very well implemented idea and it can't work with regular anti alias.

Most of UE5 default rendering features rely heavily on TAA which means the engine by default is blurry as shit, so devs compensate by slamming as many possible post processing garbage ontop. Lumen is also horrible because it kills performance while making games a dithery mess, yet every dev now just enables that shit despite it being horrid because it saves them money.

UE engineers also can't into diffuse shading so everything looks like fucking plastic

Lots of tiny things I can notice and think that newer games do better. Overall though, its only when you take a screenshot and pour over it do you notice the slight upgrades.
