It's a different kind of SRPG though, it's more quirky and it's not a serious war drama (though there are still some serious moments). You select and execute all your actions in a player phase and then the enemy has a phase where it does the same. Therefore, it's not speed based. There is strategy if you don't over-level but the series has lots of ways to grind and make your party super strong. I don't play like this however and I set a personal "no ally death" condition for each map. You can get insane with grinding in the postgame but that's generally not needed when just going through the normal story chapters. I personally love Harada's art and Sato's music as well which is one reason I love the series.

I slept on oracles in the old days but this time, especially because I'm on Tactician diff and enemies aren't dummies for the most part, shutting down units for a few turns with oracles and Beowulf is really important.

It's hardly "shit" vs "good" when you can get 5 Speed from equipment alone.But even "good" speed is going to drag the damage numbers on those class weapons down. That just a feature of those job/weapon types. A Ninja could optimize and maybe get 15 Speed by endgame, but 20 PA, depending on the gear. It's why it's a better option to just use Martial Arts on a Ninja and have high Brave, if you're going for raw damage. The best bow, Perseus Bow, only has a WP of 16. That's higher than any speed-based weapon a Ninja or Thief can use. There aren't any skillsets that pair with bows either. Knight moves work with them but they're also bad when outright killing enemies is better than taking a chance at a small debuff

All you have to do is have every stat growth be the same and adjust the job multipliers so that switching to a job makes the stats be as if you've only ever been that job. You still lose a tiny bit of customization for specific spreads but I think it's worth it over worrying about growths.

If the penalty wasn't as cruel as losing a unit or destroying a unit's stats then it would be interesting if laws were more harshly enforced by disabling anti-laws or making anti-laws just a turn only thing like Cid's ability. Specific missions could have specific laws for added difficulty like ice weak enemies banning ice based attacks. You'd still need to get rid of all encompassing laws banning whole commands like Fight, Skill etc.
