Dead Space 1 ruined Isaac by showing his face. It would've been better if he was a faceless protagonist like in other sci-fi games like Metroid and Halo (yeah I know there are face reveals in these franchises but they are few and far between).

You don't need to know who is behind the mask, he is purely the player and that's that.

it helps if his sidepiece is the main driving force behind the game
isaac and (the hallucination of) nicole in ds2 have an observable relationship that gives meaningful context to the shit taking place. their relationship in the first game is expounded to isaac by external sources as if he's forgotten about it.
you mention john, but even he has more observable attachment to the plot by a half-dozen lines of dialogue.
