what are some good fist person dungeon crawlers? I feel like grimrock 2 was the last dungeon crawler to come out
>>724452727wow never heard of it, it must be a super rare game that no one has ever heard of like skyrim
how do you map dungeons fast and efficiently? counting every step and drawing them on paper just takes too much time, pretty much doubles the playtime
>>724452783What if Skyrim was divided into cubes and you had to take a second pause in between each stepWould you like it then
>>724452654for meetrain odyssey series (3s best fight me) grimrock 1/2labyrinth of galleria/refrain (bit edgy but fun)potato flowers in full bloom (simple graphics good depth)grimoire: heralds (old as fuck but ton of content)stranger of sword cityrunefactory and recettear for honorable mentions
>>724452654Dungeon crawlers don't sell. They're almost entirely the realm of low budget inexperienced indie devs now. There's a bunch that got like 50-100 reviews on Steam.
fight knight was pretty good
>>724453129Skyrim wouldn't work well as a dungeon crawler because the level designs are so simple. Daggerfall wouldn't work because there's no level design
Just started Grimrock for the first time today. Am I supposed to be getting my shit pushed in by mushroom dudes and is my mage supposed to have fuck all spells? Thought air magic sounded cool so I dropped points into that but all I found was a fire spell.
>>724455012You can avoid enemy attacks by moving to their side/back. There's very few spells at the start. The first air spell is floor 4. I'd say putting in the required points for the fire spell as soon as you can and focusing on air after that should work
>>724455012 No matter how tanky your front line is you're still expected to use movement to attack an enemy and then move your party out of the way of an attack like backpedaling out of the range of a melee attack or sidestepping. As for spells, you don't need to find a scroll to tell you what the spell is but the runes are otherwise alien to you. You can near the end start making connections but for now just keep your eye open for secrets, spells are super powerful later on so they're really rare at the start. You can also just put a few points in fire for now just to use your fire fart spell or whatever it was called.
>>724455012it is possible to use spells without finding their scrolls first, either experiment or look up the rune list. really for the first couple floors your backline are just loot carriers or rock/dart throwers, they are an investment for later
>>724455276>>724455339>>724455414I don't wanna cheat so I won't be looking up runes, but I'll put some points into fire. I guess improving my tile dancing will be the key to success. Thanks friends.
should i play eye of the beholder or wizardry 6 first? havent really played any dungeon crawlers other than the MM6 trilogy
>>724455665Play Etrian. It will humble you.
>>724452654forgetting the heroes series, theres a bunch of old might and magic games that are on gog I think. they're not perfect, but they're really interesting modern(ish) dungeon crawling full rpgs. I've heard theu have a lot of problems on new hardware. if anyone has played any opf these games let me know because I saw on that was great with what I think was like hotkey combat essentially
>>724455819the old ones are all DOS games, they work perfectly fine on DOSBox
>>724453129yes
>>724455945do you know what I'm talking about? I think I played m&m 10 for a bit. which of these more modernish iterations are the best? and are there other games like it? also is there actually no way to play this shit on modern pc's?
>>724456168Maybe try something like Bard's Tale IV, Vaporum, or the Legend of Grimrock games. I haven't played any of these, or M&MX, but they're all modern takes on the formula.
>>72445616810 was made years after the series died (because 9 was an unfinished mess) by different devs and it's in a different style. 6-7-8 are considered the best ones and should work fine on modern pcs (might need the fan patch, i dont remember) but they're still old games GOG usually sells the games with patches included if they're needed so everything there just runs well on modern PCs anyway if you're worried about that
>>724456563which do you think is the best of 6-8? and how is ten regardless?
>>724456563yeah this is what I played. I thought it was awesome, here's the gameplay trailerhttps://youtu.be/_06uSUMwW5M?si=B2cL5bCLlpXzctL5I need everything like this. also this song is just for fun from my youth https://youtu.be/liqZkanz4K0?si=P53h2n6smQQcu_Z7enjoy
>>7244566726 is the best one and is what everyone thinks when talking about might&magic, if you're going to play only one of them play that one. haven't played 10 but I heard it's bad >>7244568176,7 and 8 are different from that because they're (mostly) real time and not grid-based. If you're looking for games like 10, try the older ones like 3,4 and 5, or if those are too old and you want something new play Legend of Grimrock
>>724452839have you tried acquiring taste faggot
>>724454609Sorry but I don't support devs who send psychic birds to attack innocent schizophrenic women
>>724455665Eye of the Beholder is a bit simpler and easier to jump into, especially if you happen to have some familiarity with AD&D rules (which would also help a bit with Wizardry, actually.) Ultimately, though, you should be fine just going with whichever one you think looks more interesting.>>724455819I've had trouble getting into the other entries I've tried, but I really enjoyed M&M3.
>>724458686Honestly it's a genre that never really saw it's full potential. I've checked every recommendation in this thread and came to the same conclusion: they all look like boring slop. The best I can tell might and magic x legacy seems to be the most interesting and in depth crawler with modernish graphics and sensibilities . I dont know of any others and the fact that no one can show me a better one is sad for the genre
>>724452654I always read this logo as Wizardryl. It's endearing.
>>724458974The limitations of the genre, like moving in tiles in most titles, are things that people enjoy about it. You're calling niche appeal "boring slop". Adding what would make it interesting to you would remove the special elements that you aren't even aware of
>>724452820by using your ability to see to draw what you see all at once instead of only the exact tile you're standing on like a toddler
>>724452654Project Nortubel of course
>>724458974There's not much money in the genre, so nobody can make money by really emphasizing presentation or graphics. Fight Knight, Das Geisterschiff, and stuff like 7th Circle show that you can do neat stuff with the genre, but most people aren't going to buy it just because they prefer walking around with WASD and having targets highlight when the mouse is pointing to them. The reason that Wizardry Daphne (the mobile game) has such a high production value isn't because DRPGs are suddenly making a comeback. It's because it's a gacha, and so they could pour gacha money into the development of such a game.
>>724459701Wizardry 8 is a game I checked out and I think it looks fantastic actually. That's what I'm looking for more or less. Again I've never played it but might and magic x legacy looks to me like it takes the progression to a logical conclusion. I could be wrong though. But stuff like grimrock which I have played is just really generic and boring to me and there are a number of them in this age. Not impressed by any of them.
>>724460245Ok, I think I misunderstood you a bit. I'd say Wizardry 8 and Grimrock are from two different subgenres. One is more of a holistic RPG, one is a puzzle and exploration game with RPG mechanics. It's just a matter of taste which you prefer
>>724460576okay that's totally fair. well if anyone has any recommendations for good holistic RPG crawlers, I'd love to hear them
>>724460847Those are actually pretty rare. I think they mostly evolved into first-person RPGs like Deus Ex
>>724452654Might I interest you in a shittier version of Wizardry 8?
I know this is kinda off-topic but it's better than asking the ARPG autists, do you guys know any games that are more like Diablo 1? I beat that recently and loved how it pretty much felt like an actual dungeon crawler with the oppressive atmosphere, slow and difficult gameplay and the whole game being a single dungeon that you descent. Then I started 2 and it ditched everything I loved about 1 to be a mindless dopamine rush game and looks like all games in the genre copy 2 instead of 1
>>724462595sauce?
>>724464205wizards and warriors
Why isn’t there more modern blobbers? Too hardcore for modern audience?
>>724464205Wizards & Warriors>>724464098"Tower of Kalemonvo" has released somewhat recently and it tried to recapture Diablo 1 feel.
>>724464098Nox is a fun ARPG from Westwood. It’s not very similar to Diablo, but you might like it.
For me, its picrel
>>724452654Might not be exactly what you're after but Barony is a fun one.
>>724452654my favorite is Strange Journey.-
>>724456378Vaporum is very miss. It's Grimrock but balanced and designed far worse. The sequel Vaporum Lockdown I enjoyed a lot more even though it was still pretty badly balanced.>>724464326If they make them I'll play them. Even the shit ones like Starcrawlers Chimera.
>>724464771is this porn
