Modern graphics look better in some wats and worse in others, CGI/pre-rendered graphics are different from graphics in real time. I consider the Knack games two games with beautiful cartoony graphics for example.

In Pixar's case, it was a combination of their own custom Renderman software that they still use today, and an army of SGI workstations and off the shelf PC's.

I can’t tell if living in a world with CGI like Toy Story would be a dream or a nightmare. It’d be a very surreal experience, it’s a movie that sticks with you even if you somehow didn’t grow up with it. The improvements in just 6 years with Shrek are very noteworthy as well.
>>
video games look better than Toy Story 1 though

Because it was difficult to work with meaning people had to put genuine effort into it.
Nowadays a kid can pick up and learn 3D modelling and make something that looks presentable.

Toy Story has been "remastered" at least three times, each time featuring a different render of the movie that changes minor textures/colors and animations and some character modelwork.

You probably haven't seen the version you saw in your childhood since you stopped watching your VHS version.
>>
>>724455998
i don't even care because non-remastered versions look like dogshit on nice tv's

In the modern sense, all of those deleted assets would only really take up a few GB's of storage. The sprites in the SNES Donkey Kong Country games are the same models seen in the promotional renders. Donkey Kong Country was ahead of it's time for using CG promo renders back in 1994. Nintendo started doing it in 1996 with the release of the N64. Almost all of their box art features CG renders.

Going from Toy Story (1995) to Toy Story 2 (1999) was a pretty big tech jump in rendering.

It wouldn't matter if they weren't changing things every time they re-render the movie at a higher resolution. If the files and models aren't working anymore due to modern hardware or software, then just use whatever film negatives were initially made and saved instead of doing another render.

modern videogames have an edge in every area that's not bottlenecked by render time. they have more sophisticated material simulation algorithms but running in real time they are still a long way off from matching toy story's poly count and light bounces.

They should have really used Silicon Graphics Computers™ for the Toy Story game though. I don't understand why they didn't use Silicon Graphics Computers™ when designing the game.

Personally, the game was a huge disappointment. The graphics could've been as good as Donkey Kong Country, but Disney blew it. The gameplay is so hard that the game is literally impossible, and the cheats makes the game way too easy. It's too bad the great graphics are let down by the mindless gameplay.

Bottom-line: The game has better gameplay than all the Donkey Kong Country games but without using Silicon Graphics technology, this game is a jar, folks.

I'd like to see the intro of Toy Story 2 to be turned into a real game. Too bad it will never happen.

I'm pretty sure that the original 16bit Toy Story game that was developed by Travellers Tales used SGI renders for the sprites and background objects. Those machines were the gold standard for almost a decade... before general Windows-Intel machines really took over the landscape.

They didn't use Silicon Graphics Computers™ you can tell from the edging on Woody.

i don't even think you can make offline renders look like that anymore. it's exclusively some mentalray scanline approach isn't it? something dating back to the first sgi 3d software packages.
