Let me try to break it down: In World of Darkness, the system that Vampire and other games use, there are three types of damage: Bashing, Lethal, and Aggravated. Bashing is what you would expect, damage from punches, bats, etc. Lethal are weapons like knives, guns, electricity, and generally anything that someone would be highly dangerous when struck. Aggravated represents either supernatural damage or something egregiously lethal in the case of mortals. You have an HP pool, which is typically around 6 for newer characters and damage is marked as a forward slash, X, or star corresponding to bashing, lethal, and aggravated damage. Each time you take a form of damage, you mark off the leftmost box with damage received. This continues until all boxes are filled, at which point you receive heavy penalties and any damage received is upgraded to the next highest (e.g. you take bashing when all boxes are filled with bashing and it converts to lethal, lethal to aggravated). Once all boxes fill with lethal, you're in a coma. Once all boxes fill with aggravated, you're a ghost. Kindred have a special condition in that guns cause bashing damage instead of lethal. This means that they have effectively double the HP pool of a mortal when being shot, AND they have the capability to heal wounds using the supernatural power of their blood unlike mortals who have to wait to heal.So a shotgun blast is not going to majorly fuck you up unless the guy firing it has some high stats and you are fresh off the boat and totally unarmored...OR if they have specialized ammo. Remember what I said about bashing damage? If they fire dragonbreath, that's all aggravated, which can't be healed with your blood. Now THAT will fuck you up in a couple shots.
