>this made boomers shit and piss their pants with excitement

Because jumping from 2D to 3D was a massive shock to people back then. Mostly because they weren’t able to fully understand the concept. Can you imagine a 4D game? No? Then you understand how boomers felt when this came out. It was a novel and mind blowing step forwards

I didn't know the world was 2D before id made DOOM. Was this before or after color was invented?

The entire world was actually text before Kojima.

Yup, but then when Doom came out and you had a computer with a sound card that could properly play it? Wooo boy was it something else.

not quite, there was PC titles prior that had a first person perspective and the concept of 3D gaming was already available in arcade cabinets at the time. What made Wolf3D influential was the ultra smooth faux 3d rendering (a ridiculously efficient raycasting engine) on a home computer that wasn't even really capable of smooth screen scrolling on 2d platformers. You combine that with the edgier theme of an immersive German castle in world war two with fighting hitler rather than space craft or wizards, give it a slaughter map or two, make the game run as fast as mouse movement allows and you got a focused, simple shooter on a system you were only previously using for MS Excel. It became antiquated when Doom released but it really defined what a real time action shooter game was going to become and the base formula, the core for how to build from and what to expect out of one because it was intuitive (secrets, running over items to collect them, balancing etc)

My favorite aspect is how it pioneered game modding because fans reverse-engineered their own editor tools, and this is what inspired id Software to make Doom easily moddable from the get-go.

Nah, it was DOOM. And that game STILL holds up and is fun.

It also prototyped the free-to-play model that companies rediscovered in the 2010s. I'm legitimately astounded that every company doesn't give the first 25% of their game out for free and then paywall the latter 75% after people are hooked.

I just beat this and I was surprised by how much harder it is than Doom

It has some weird difficulty spikes. Episode 2 is one of the hardest, and it's then followed by Episode 3 which is one of the easiest. It kinda stays that way for a bit, and then Episode 6, especially the 2nd half, is just the developers throwing everything left in the tank at the player.

It was the only fps on planet earth at the time and also the first time the human race had seen a fps,
Those ppl were prob more excited than anybody has ever been in the rest of fps history.
