Daily reminder that Valve’s next VR headset will be running a Linux ARM version of SteamOS tailored for XR

It will include its own standalone Linux ARM Steam client

And will launch with “Steam Play 3.0” which will be able to play Android ARM, Windows ARM, and Windows x86 games

Though admittedly a valve backed android layer would be great, I mean there always seems to be something wrong with them.
Notice our boy Timmy has android games on Epic, while there's no cross buy, the games are notably cheaper than PC counterparts..

I love VR but valve won't save it. The fact they still want to put the processing inside of it means it will be heavy and with bad graphics, meaning that people won't want to use it for long.

They will put the computing inside because VR is for children who play hypercasual games with horrible graphics and for techie bros to open windows and pretend they are cyberpunk.

VR needed 20 Alyxs level games before it tried to appeal to a bigger demographic. Anything that comes to VR now is for general casual use audiences, not dedicated ones. It's dead.

It needs multiple self-sustaining multiplayer ecosystems that retain players for a long period of time. A polished single-player game like Half-Life Alyx is nice, but it's not enough to keep people in the system. There's VRChat but that's it.

It’s already been speculated that the Quest 3 is just as powerful to a GTX 1050 and a 8 year old i5 4 core 8 thread CPU which is actually just right at the most minimal specs that Half-Life Alyx could run at 72hz and low graphics and 1080p per eye. VR games today (Look at the system specs for Forefront, Battlefield VR clone game that’s coming on Quest 3 and Steam in a week) on PC are still designed for like GTX 9 series and 4 core CPUs because how every VR game is designed for quest 3. I’m sure with a better hardware chip to cut through translation overhead, it’s basically a Quest 3 level performant headset which is fine because VR games on PC aren’t really demanding anymore

Some dude imported all the alyx assets without optimization to run a unity demo and it hovers around 50-72fps in the intro at 2k per eye
That's with no optimizations. VR devs are simply hacks. The best looking quest games we've got is ghost town and they coped out with 45fps ASW's to 90. Meta reprojection algorithim is the best of everything else but holy fuck if that doesn't tell you about the state of the industry.
