https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HulO5oR4SaUI feel like the spirit of Flash games live on with HTML5 projects. You can straight up play my free crime sandbox game in any browser immediately with nearly everything you'd expect from a 2D GTA style game, it's like Stick RPG in many wayshttps://progchad.itch.io/pixurbiahttps://gx.games/games/r5r8eb/pixurbia-2d-crime-sandbox/
>>724565386thisat some point more kids had unsupervised access to a smart phone with mobile games than a home computer with a browser. Now both mobile games (and by extension flash games) have unironically been replaced by Roblox
1) Apple2) Adobe3) The-Fuck, the death of /f/ still hurts after all these months. i can't joke about that shit.
Steam ending greenlight, allowing early access and allowing every Chang, Pablo and Sukdeep on the platform for a small fee is what killed flash. For over decade, flash was where indie devs cut their teeth and built reputations and design skills that would eventually translate into a successful full-fledged indie game. When greenlight ended not having actual people willing to buy your game stopped being a barrier to release on steam, flash then became pointless, because why would you spend time and effort making a flash game to build an audience when you could make an early access cash grab instead and scam some people while learning to make games.>>724565338Nope. Flash was already effectively dead already when this occurred.
>>724565265Call me retarded but I'd like to say Steam did it. Yes, Flash dying is what killed flash games, kinda, but the flash player could be used as a standalone application, so I'd say that didn't truly "kill" them. The motivation behind making a game shifted around the 2010s and people who would have made flash games started making indie games to publish on Steam instead, in hopes of making the next big thing. These were the types of people who had already had practice making games with Flash, but exited the scene. When you're dealing with a dedicated engine with its own language, you need veterans to stick around and teach the newbies.

>>724565265Apple not supporting it on the iPhone, made websites stop working and a giant shift happened, around 2010 flash was quite dead with pretty much complete removal in the few years after

>>724565265Fucks me up that apparently it was Edmund McMillen who designed and animated the Kongregate logo
>>724566169I'd say Steam took a part in it but it's definitely mobile games that rapidly drowned out Flash games at least at first. I love playing all of the flash game remasters & sequels on Steam and supporting all of these people that carried the Flash games scene in the process. Most of the "Legacy Collection" apps are a bit lame for the price they ask though.
>mobile games are just flash games>but there's more microtransactions>and more advertising>and the controls are shit>and a bunch of them are carbon-copies of each other>and not a single app store is good so have fun sifting through all the garbage on theredidn't appreciate how good we had it
Flash was a dogshit technology and even before it was axed Flash games were long dead. It wouldn't have changed anything even if they continued supporting Flash. The tech itself was irrelevant, the spirit died long before 2020.
>>724565386This. The market shifted away from computers and most consumers moved to smartphones. Flash just didn't transition nicely to smartphones even if it was technically supported on Android. Also, iOS never supported it because Apple wanted to force people into making apps within the constraints of their own ecosystem and tech stack. So a part of the reason is just Apple being much more relevant than Adobe.>>724565430This is also correct. More specifically <canvas> and improvements made to JavaScript between 2008-2012. There was no reason to make a Flash project after 2015 with the release of ES6. You can create anything in a web browser engine now, without requiring Flash as a plugin and without it adding thousands of additional security issues on top of the browser.

>>724565947The shittiest part is it could still be around if the mods would get off their asses and do any amount of work. The security threat is bullshit, there's no threat in hosting a file that you don't interact with in any way it was just an excuse for them to not be bothered with doing actual work. Much simpler to kill and hide the history of when this place wasn't a xitter repost collection.

>>724565265The flash era was the last time video games were made for fun and you could see devs getting better over time and just wanting to share their work for free with other nerds. At the same time that Tim Apple killed it we started seeing the shift in direction of those devs where they'd drop flash to sell their games on console and steam instead. The devs were already gone, even if flash was still alive they would have stopped using it.We got really fucking lucky that Gayben didn't kill free mods too

Man, I remember being on shit internet and playing some game called PAWN. It was a stick figure arena shooter with chat roomsThen I discovered Crazy Monkey Games and loved playing Thing Thing & Song before moving on to Armored Games and eventually New grounds. Back when banner advertisements were people actually just bringing traffic to their games, and not just malware, which is how I found Sherwood dungeon and 2007 Roblox. I know I'm just nostalgia rambling, but wtf happened to games just being fun and not cash grabs
>>724578658Meant to say Sony instead of Song. That game was dope as hell, and I just recently found it again on Steam

If you think about what you were doing at the time (you were a dumb kid trying to kill time) and think about what those kids are doing now, they're just downloading games on their phone.>>724565338Wrong answer. "Flash games" can just refer to any browser game. HTML5 games are really easy to create and compile, and there are HTML5 wrappers to play old flash games. Think of post-flash browser games like agar.io, I would classify that as a "flash game" even though it wasn't adobe flash.

Sthief J"ude"obs wanted to force everyone into his gay-ass "app store" and charge developers for developing, so he mandated that flash doesn't run in iFone. >>724565265The Epic Battle Fantasy dev is still making them.
>>724565265those who claim html5 superseded flash do not seem to understand that swf files were very bandwidth efficient and reliable, neither of which html5 experiences are. you'll be lucky to have an html5 project load before you die of old age and god help you if you want something responsive and light on memory considering browsers already eat it for a 3-course meal.
>>724588327>lol what drivel. FLASH games are FLASH games made with FLASHThis is an autistic response but not the correct one. You're kind of intrinsically making the argument that when people like OP express nostalgia about flash games, it's Adobe Flash, rather than the spirit of the games and the means of accessing them in a tiny window in internet explorer. There were even a couple notable "flash games" back then that were actually Java applets, yet nontechnical people still called them flash games, because they looked exactly the same. But I wouldn't expect you to know that since you were probably 2 years old.
